click for details | | THE POTTER'S FREEDOM: A Defense of the Reformation and a Rebuttal of Norman Geisler's 'Chosen But Free' James White
"James White combines sound biblical exegesis, theological erudition, and a deep passion for truth in his able rebuttal to Norman Geisler's Chosen but Free. I am grateful that The Potter's Freedom powerfully exposes Geisler's inconsistencies and shows that his self-labeled "moderate Calvinism" is no Calvinism at all. The Potter's Freedom has far-reaching consequences for any serious student of Reformed theology, for Geisler is not a lone ranger in promoting historic Reformed theology as "extreme Calvinism" and Semi-pelagianism as "moderate Calvinism." I pray that God may use this book abundantly to remove many caricatures about the Reformed faith and to move many to embrace unabashedly solid, Reformed convictions." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke
"Many of us, who have otherwise profited from the writings of Dr. Norman Geisler, have been grieved by his hapless attempt to harmonize Calvinism and Arminianism. With the skill of a surgeon, Dr. James R. White dissects Geisler's arguments and reveals them to be based on convoluted thinking, inconsistencies, and misinterpretations of Scripture. I pray that this book shall have a wide audience, not just as a definitive rebuttal to Geisler, but also as a helpful exposition of the Calvinisim/Arminianism debate." -Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

| | | | 365 DAYS WITH CALVIN A Unique Collection of Readings from the Writings of John Calvin Selected by Dr. Joel Beeke
John Calvin exercised a profound ministry in Europe, and is probably one of the most seminal thinkers ever to have lived. A godly pastor, theologian and preacher, he led his flock by example and worked hard to establish consistent godliness in his city. A prolific writer, his sermons, letters, and, of course, his 'Christian Institutes' have been published again and again. His writings, once described as 'flowing prose', are characterized by clarity, simplicity, and yet profoundness, too. In these heart-warming pieces, drawn from his commentaries and sermons, Calvin brings us to Christ, the glorious Savior of all his people.
Endorsements
"Daily devotionals, spiritual aids to help us be accountable for a life of disciplined reading of Scripture and prayer, have been around for centuries and need a certain caliber of excellence and insight if they are to prove of lasting value through 365 days! Of those I'd like to spend a year with as my spiritual guide and mentor, John Calvin is most certainly one of them. Joel Beeke guides us through the Reformer's writings to help us discover the help and insight that every Christian needs to live a God-honoring life for Jesus Christ." - Derek W. H. Thomas

Isaac Backus (1724-1806) was foremost a pastor; but his importance to American Baptist and the Church in general is immense. "The role which Backus played during the formative years of his denomination in America was so crucial that he has been termed the father of American Baptists." Roger Williams may have been the biological father of Baptists in America but Backus stands as their adoptive father. What Rogers began, Backus consolidated and gave a clear mandate to. In particular, Backus restored to Baptists their theological roots which had been mostly lost in the years after Williams. He, became the chief spokesman for the 'evangelical Calvinism' which replaced the Arminianism prevalent among the older Baptist churches. In spite of the Calvinism of the earliest New England Baptists, a shift to the Arminian outlook had been completed by the time of the Awakening. The 'Separate Baptists' largely followed the 'evangelical Calvinism' of Jonathan Edwards. Backus was their chief spokesman, articulating in the Baptist context the themes of sovereign grace which had been so eloquently espoused by Edwards."

click for details | | BY HIS GRACE AND FOR HIS GLORY: A Historical, Theological, and Practical Studyof the Doctrines of Grace in Baptist Life Tom Nettles
Initially this book arose, published in 1986, as a response to church reactions to the January Bible Study of 1980. Since then, the issues engaged have become more visible, more widely embraced by church members, pastors, denominational servants, more controversial and ardently opposed by some, and the subject of many discussion groups in churches and a variety of denominational settings. The attention focused on the doctrines of grace is good; it is healthy to give intense thought to issues of God's holiness, His sovereignty, and His efficacious and infinitely wise design in the justification of sinners under the curse of His Law.
Revised and Expanded 20th Anniversary Edition
"Tom Nettles' book By His Grace and For His Glory is a landmark study. Bringing together the disciplines of the school, the concerns of the preacher and the heart of a Christian, Nettles effectively reminds Baptists of our own day what so many before us believed to be the gospel." - Mark Dever
"A valuable contribution both for its history of Baptist theology and for its insistence on the loss by Baptists of their Calvinist heritage as well as for its clear and candid statement of Calvinism for today." (ADRIS Newsletter)
Tom Ascol: "Fifteen years after its first appearance, Tom Nettles' book remains an important work for modern Baptists. His major historical thesis - that the doctrines of grace formed a theological consensus among Baptists in the Southern states from the mid-nineteenth century into the first quarter of the twentieth century - has not seriously been engaged, much less refuted, by detractors and others who are less than thrilled by this doctrinal heritage. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to be honest when assessing historic Southern Baptist theology."(Pastor, Grace Baptist Church in Cape Coral, Florida; Editor, Founders Journal)

This little gem is filled with myriads of powerful testimonies concerning the Political, Moral and Evengelizing Force of the Doctrines of Grace.
"I do not know of any other book that sets forth so effectively and yet in such a brief form the real nature of Calvinism and the effect that it has had in history." Loraine Boettner
"This is a readable and happy account of Calvinism in history." Rousas Rushdoony
"This book sure-footedly guides us over the terrain of Calvinism's broadsweeping political and moral influence, concluding that Calvinism's evangelistic power results from the doctrines of grace, particularly justification by faith alone." Joel Beeke
It is a privilege for Solid Ground to bring this book back into print with the sincere desire that it will travel throughout the world and bear witness to the truth of the great doctrines of Augustine and Calvin.

click for details | | HEROES OF THE REFORMATION: Life-Changing Lessons for the Young Richard Newton
William G. Blaikie wrote the following words about the author of this book on Heroes of the Reformation, "In preaching to the young, Dr. Newton has attained the first rank in this department of work. The American mind has such a proclivity to sharp, terse forms of expression, clever analogies and illustrations, keen analysis of feelings, vivid description and warm coloring, that we do not wonder tghat it should excel in addresses to which such qualities contribute so largely."
C.H. Spurgeon said of this volume: "The records of the Reformation translated into fascinating language for young people, by one who knows how to enthrall youthful ears and hearts. A book which should be read by every boy and girl throughout the empire."
This volume includes brief but very informative sketches on the likes of Wycliffe, Huss, Savonarola, Luther, Melancthon, Tyndale, Edward the Sixth, John Fox, Latimer and Ridley, Cranmer, Knox, Zwingli, Calvin, Farel, Alasco, Gustaus Adolphus and several others.
In the words of the author, "There is nothing more helpful to us, in seeking to serve God, than to try and learn the practical lessons which we find illustrated in the lives of the good and holy men, who have been a blessing to the church and to the world through their faithful labors. The 'Heroes of the Reformation' belong to this class, and these sketches of their noble lives are sent forth in the earnest hope that through God's blessing they may prove useful to the young who are trying to serve him."

click for details | | THE ITALIAN REFORMER: The Life and Martyrdom of Aonio Palearioand the Book "The Benefit of Christ's Death" William M. Blackburn
AONIO PALEARIO (1500-1570) is a little known Italian Reformer and a teacher of Greek and Hebrew when he came to embrace the doctrine of Jusfificfation by faith alone in Christ alone. In addition to the exicitng life of Aonio Paleario and his friends, this edition contains his most famous book THE BENEFIT OF CHRIST'S DEATH, which he wrote to teach his fellow contrymen that "those who turn with their souls to Christ crucified, commit themselves to him by faith, acquiesce in the promises and cleave with assured faith to him who cannot deceive, are delivered from all evil, and enjoy a full pardon of all their sins." The book was soon sought for and eagerly read in all parts of Italy. Forty-thousand copies are said to have been sold in six years. Of course it attracted the attention of the Inquisition, and was speedily prohibited, and burned by the tens of thousands.
"The book of Paleario," says Jules Bonnet, "had none of the poignant irony or satirical tone of Savonarola. The author carefully abstained from all controversy, in order to make known the doctrine of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ, the nature of which he explained and the fruits of which he described with the deepest feeling. 'The Benefit' is not so much a book as an outpouring of the heart."
"The Italian Reformer was burned at the stake for the teaching in this book and his riveting testimony before his persecutors rings down the centuries as a call to reformation and revival. A rare work by a rare author, now happily rediscovered for a new public." - Gordon Keddie
Vergerio, an old Italian writer quoted by the editor of the English edition of 1860, stated that "there is scarcely a book of this age, so sweet, so pious, so simple, and so well fitted to instruct the ignorant and weak, especially in the doctrine of justification."
William M. Blackburn (1828-1898) adds our indebtedness to him by this outstanding book that brings back a name nearly forgotten from the times of the Reformation. This book will stand alongside his books on Farel, Zwingli and Calvin and will once again cause his name to be known in our day as it was in the nineteenth century.

click for details | | THE FIVE POINTS OF CALVINISM Robert L. Dabney
"The most conspicuous figure and the leading theological guide of the Southern Presbyterian Church, the most prolific theological writer that Church has as yet produced, and for a period of over forty years one of the most distinguished and probably the most impressive teacher of its candidates for the ministry." - B.B. Warfield
"The best teacher of theology in the United States, if not the world. " - A.A. Hodge
"R.L. Dabney was one of the nineteenth century's greatest theologians, in fact one of the top Reformed theologians of all time. His work is invariably exegetical and precise. I am very thankful to the folk at Solid Ground Christian Books for making Dabney's 'Five
Points of Calvinism' available. The book will prove useful for the explanation and defense of these foundational doctrines of grace." Joseph A. Pipa, Jr., Ph.D. President of Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
"Dabney was a towering figure in the 19th century American theological world. His exposition of the five points of Calvinism will enrich the reader's appreciation for the doctrines of grace, the glory of the Gospel, the accomplishment of the work of Christ and the security of the believer." - Ligon Duncan
"Dabney has been described as representing a moderate Calvinism. That does not mean, however, he was a man with little or no convictions. The Five Points of Calvinism is a good introduction to Dabney in 'moderation' and a better place for the novice to be trained in basic Calvinism. Abounding with Scripture and logical argumentation, this is another 'old book' that's useful for the Church today." - Dr. C.N. Willborn
"The object of this tract is simply to enable all honest inquirers after truth to understand just what those doctrines really are which people style the peculiar "doctrines of Presbyterians," and thus to enable honest minds to answer all objections and perversions. I do not write because of any lack in our church of existing treatises well adapted to our purpose; nor because I think anyone can now add anything really new to the argument. But our pastors and missionaries think that some additional good may come from another short discussion suitable for unprofessional readers.." - from the Author
Here is a cogent defense of Calvinism by Robert Lewis Dabney against the charge of the Arminian thought that the doctrine of eternal security promotes "unholy living".
Robert Lewis Dabney (March 5, 1820 - January 3, 1898) was known as one of the greatest Southern Presbyterian theologians of the nineteenth century. During the American Civil War, Dabney first served as as a Chaplain 18th Virginia Calvary Regiment he later served as a Chief of Staff to General Stonewall Jackson.
From 1853 to 1859 he was professor of Ecclesiastical History and then served from adjunct professor of Systematic Theology from 1859 to 1869 at Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, VA. While serving as one of the first faculty members at the University of Texas in Austin, as a Professor of Mental and Moral philosophy, Dabney and R. K. Smoot, founded and maintained the Austin School of Theology (now known as Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary).
In 1870 Dabney became the moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States.

| | | | THE EXPOSITORY GENIUS OF JOHN CALVIN Stephen J. Lawson
"Through an introductory study of John Calvin's preaching, Steve Lawson provides a practical Homiletics 1 refresher course that can be read in one evening, but should be read annually for lifelong impact. Factual yet stimulating, simple yet penetrating, 'The Expository Genius of John Calvin' contains many scriptural and theocentric golden nuggets and hands-on practical tips for beginning expositors and seasoned preachers alike. May God use it to revitalize Christ-centered and Spirit-empowered applicatory preaching in our day." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke
"Preachers reading this book will be moved to take to heart Calvin's encompassion belief in the sovereignty of God's Word - as to its total sufficiency and massive potency. Further, they will be inspired to pursue the deep, enriching paths of lectio continua. This is a beautifully written, powerful, and convincing book. It is a must read for all who aspire to preach the word." - R. Kent Hughes
"In this book, Dr. Steve Lawson has masterfully presented us with thirty-two keynotes that made Calvin the best preacher of the Reformation, all of them centered around the Word of God preached expositorily. I would make this book recommended reading in courses such as homiletics and missions for any serious pastor and student." - Dr. Alonzo Ramirez
"An infectious appreciation of the preaching of John Calvin from the pen of Steven Lawson. No one reading this volume can fail to appreciate the debt we owe the 'Genevan Reformer.' Lawson has consulted the best of current scholarship and has produced a comprehensive distillation of the contours of the Reformer's preaching and, with it, a compelling advocacy of consecutive expository preaching. A magnificent achievement." -Dr. Derek Thomas

| | | | THE SERMONS OF JOHN CALVIN John Calvin
CALVIN THE PREACHER WAS CALVIN AT HIS VERY BEST.
"John Calvin was a remarkable preacher. In his own day his sermons were eagerly attended by his followers and were printed, widely distributed in a number of languages, and read by many. In our day Calvin's reputation as a theologian and Biblical commentator has largely overshadowed his reputation as a preacher and his sermons have been difficult to find. The republication of Calvin's sermons is a very welcome event. These sermons will help us see again the greatness of Calvin as a preacher, but much more importantly they will be a source of great spiritual blessing to every believer who reads them." - Dr. W. Robert Godfrey
"Calvin was preeminently a preacher, and as a preacher he saw himself primarily as a Bible teacher. Calvin is hardly thought of in this way today. He is best known for his greatly influential 'Institutes of the Christian Religion,' not for his preaching, yet he spent most of his time and effort preaching two sermons on Sunday and usually every day of the week (Monday through Friday) on alternate weeks. It is a delight to have these sermons available again." - James M. Boice
'It is hoped that the reader of these sermons will seek not just to confirm the sermons' agreement with Calvinistic theology, but particularly to experience Calvin's sincere and profound personal response to the loving and merciful God whose Son is on the threshold of judging with finality the whole world with mercy and justice.' - From the Translator's Preface
John Calvin is generally thought of as the greatest theologian of the Protestant Reformation or as a gifted Bible commentator whose insights into the text of Scripture are still highly valued today. Yet it is not widely known that the greatest obligation Calvin felt was not to his fellow scholars, nor even to his students, but to the ordinary people - citizens of Geneva and persecuted refugees, shopkeepers and merchants, the young and the old - who crowded St Peter's church no less than ten times a fortnight to listen to his sermons in French.
Calvin's sermons have lain for too long in the shadow of his commentaries. In seeking to correct this imbalance, it should be remembered that a sermon serves a very different purpose from a commentary. While explanation and interpretation are enough for students, they are never enough for a congregation of sinners. That is why Calvin's sermons always combine the essential elements of all true preaching - exposition, exhortation and practical application. So let the reader be warned: this volume contains lively preaching! Calvin aims to awaken the conscience and also demands life-changing action. Is it any wonder that such preaching was used by God to bring spiritual renewal on an unprecedented scale to the people and nations of sixteenth-century Europe?

click for details | | THE HUMANNESS OF JOHN CALVIN: The Reformer as a Husband, Father, Pastor & Friend Richard Stauffer, translated by George Shriver
NOW AVAILABLE TO SHIP!
"This little book is one of a kind. Written by a careful historian and Swiss pastor, it draws on Calvin's correspondence and other records of the time to give a strong impression of what the reformer was like as a person, in his family life, in his close friendships, and in his sympathy and generosity as a pastor." - Rev. Sherman Isbell
"I shall never forget the impact of this small work on my own estimation of Calvin: it completely re-oriented my perspective on the French Reformer, and now, thanks to Solid Ground Christian Books, it can do the same for you. Read on, prepare to be challenged and rejoice that God raises up such historians for the blessing of the Church." - Dr. Michael Haykin
"In the early years of my first pastorate I read the excellent biographies of Calvin by T. H. L. Parker, and Emanuel Stickelberger. At the same time I acquired Calvin's letters and the splendid little study which you now hold in your hands. Already convinced of the humanness of Calvin I considered Richard Stauffer's study to be unique in demonstrating this dimension of the great theologian. Beyond its value as an historical polemic, it provides a marvelous example to all who would be faithful pastors and theologians. The best response to detractors is the Christ-like example which Calvin left us." - Rev. Gregory Reynolds
Through the nearly 450 years since his death, John Calvin has been portrayed by his critics - Protestant as well as Catholic - as a cold, ruthless fanatic. This distorted characterization, for the most part, remains today. What was this man really like? An unfeeling, gloomy monster or a saint untouched by the common problems which beset lesser men?
The author examines Calvin's personal correspondence and reveals him as a man capable of human mistakes and weaknesses, and yet, a deeply dedicated, sensitive individual undeserving of the years of vilification. This book, available here in English, for the first time in over 35 years, considers John Calvin from a personal standpoint. The excellent preface by Calvin-scholar John T. McNeill, carefully noted resources, brevity, readability, and human interest make this a biography for scholars and laymen alike.
"On the occasion of the appearance of this English edition (in 1971), I would like to share a hope and a memory. The hope: that the portrait of Calvin as husband and father, friend and pastor, which I have tried to paint on these pages, might show more than one reader the true stature of the Genevan Reformer, who is also one of the spiritual fathers of the founders of the United States. The memory: when I was a student in New York and assisted in worship in the small French Church of the Holy Spirit, I never failed to be moved upon reading on the walls of the sanctuary the names of the Huguenot families which had found refuge in the New World. At that time I could not help thinking (and it is still my belief to this day) that these witnesses of the faith, uncompromising in their convictions, were fully the descendants of this John Calvin, who, though human in his obedience, yet offered his 'heart as a burnt sacrifice to the Lord.' It is in thinking of these refugees of other years that I dedicate this essay, which attempts to exonerate the name of Calvin, to contemporary Americans who are mindful of their origins." - the Author
