THOMAS ADAMS WAS THE SHAKESPEARE OF THE PURITANS!
Thomas Adams (1583-1652) was a powerful preacher, a much-quoted writer, and an influential divine. Prominent leaders in church and state, such as John Donne and the earl of Pembroke, were among his friends.
Adams sermons have been admired since their first printing; the 'placed him beyond all comparison in the van of the preachers of England, and had something to do with shaping John Bunyan. His numerous works display great learning, classical and patristic. And are unique in their abundance of stories, anecdotes, aphorisms, and puns' (Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th edition).
Alexander B. Grosart wrote of him: "Thomas Adams stands in the forefront of our great English preachers. He is not as sustained as Jeremy Taylor, nor so continuously sparkling as Thomas Fuller, but he is surpassingly eloquent and brilliant, and much more thought-laden than either."

 | | | | PREPARED BY GRACE, FOR GRACE The Puritans on God's Ordinary Way of Leading Sinners to Christ Joel Beeke with Paul Smalley
Few teachings of the Puritans have provoked such strong reactions and conflicting interpretations as their views on preparing for saving faith. Many twentieth-century scholars dismissed preparation as a prime example of regression from the Reformed doctrine of grace for a man-centered legalism. In 'Prepared by Grace, for Grace,' Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley make careful analysis of the Puritan understanding of preparatory grace, demonstrate its fundamental continuity with the Reformed tradition, and identify matters where even the Puritans disagreed among themselves. Clearing away the many misconceptions and associated accusations of preparationism, this study is sure to be the standard work on how the Puritans understood the ordinary way God leads sinners to Christ.

 Table of Contents:
 Introduction: The Question of Preparationism
 1. Preparation and Modern Scholarship
 2. Precedents to Puritan Preparation: Augustine to Calvin
 3. Preparation and Early English Puritans: Perkins, Sibbes, and Preston
 4. Preparation for Conversion: William Ames

 6. Preparation in Early New England (II): Shepard and Pemble
 7. Preparation and the Antinomian Controversy: John Cotton
 8. Preparation at the Pinnacle of Puritanism: Westminster, Burroughs, and Guthrie
 9. Preparation under a Scholastic Lens: Norton
 10. Preparation and Later Puritan Critiques: Goodwin and Firmin
 11. Later Puritan Preparation: Flavel and Bunyan
 12. Jonathan Edwards and Seeking God

 14. The Grace of Preparation for Faith
Appendix: William Ames's Theological Disputation on Preparation
"I can think of no abler team of writers in the world today to tackle the important issue of preparatory grace, with all of its attendant law-gospel implications, than Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley. As with legalism, preparatory grace suffers from verbal abuse - partly through ignorance of the real issues, and partly through prejudice for its supposed attempt to usurp gospel grace. Beeke and Smalley have provided us with a plethora of historical and theological material to enable us to walk through this controversial but important issue. It has been suggested that to understand the relationship between law and gospel is to be a theologian; on this score, these authors are theologians par excellence." - Derek W. H. Thomas, professor of systematic and historical theology, RTS Atlanta, and minister for preaching and teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina
"Prepared by Grace, for Grace is a truly remarkable book. Many have referred to Puritan 'preparation for grace,' but hardly at all with serious scholarly attention given to the original sermons or writings. But here is finally a study that is both thorough and fair. We learn that preparation can mean many different things, with diverse theological settings. But the vital issue is still with us today: If people are dead in sin, how can we continue to talk to them?
Reformed people sometimes find it hard to put together thinking theologically and doing effective evangelism. If unbelievers are really dead in sin, what's the point? Can evangelism be more than just mouthing words that no one understands? Francis Schaeffer's 'pre-evangelism' had much the same agenda as 'preparation,' making it clear to us again that we all must address these concerns as we work within our nihilistic culture. This book gives us a flying start." - D. Clair Davis, professor and chaplain, Redeemer Seminary, Dallas

Authors- Joel R. Beeke is president and professor of systematic theology and homiletics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, and a pastor of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Paul M. Smalley is a teacher's assistant for Dr. Beeke

BRAND NEW PAPERBACK EDITION FROM BANNER OF TRUTH

JOHN BUNYAN [1628-1888] was C. H. Spurgeon's favorite author and his legendary work, THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS, is the most popular book ever written apart from Holy Scripture. Spurgeon loved reading and re-reading this work, claiming to have read it over 100 times! many times with his wife reading it to him in afternoon relaxation and meditation. He often quoted Bunyan in his sermons declaring, "Though his writings are charmingly full of poetry, yet he cannot give us his Pilgrim's Progress, that sweetest of all prose poems, without continually making us feel and say, 'Why, this man is a living Bible!' Prick him anywhere; his blood is Bibline, the very essence of the Bible flows from him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is FULL of the Word of God."
Spurgeon first became enthralled with this classic when but a small child, in the attic of his grandfather's manse. The old wood-cut illustrations were especially interesting to the young lad, and later his sermons were quite saturated with references to the characters and events in the story. Thomas Spurgeon, one of his twin sons, wrote the preface to these articles which were first published in The Sword and the Trowel Magazine after C. H. Spurgeon's death.

click for details | | A PASTOR'S SKETCHES: Conversation's with Anxious Souls Concerning the Way of Salvation: Two Volumes in One Ichabod Spencer (1798-1854)
WE BEGAN SOLID GROUND CHRISTIAN BOOKS IN THE WINTER OF 2001 AND OUR FIRST MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT WAS REPRINTING 'A PASTOR'S SKETCHES' BY ICHABOD SPENCER.

***OUR ORIGINAL PAPERBACK EDITION OF THE DOUBLE VOLUME IS NOW AVAILABLE***

These sketches were first published in 1850 and 1853 toward the end of the remarkable ministry of the man known as "The Bunyan of Brooklyn." These books consist of 77 "sketches" or "case studies" drawn from the ministry of one of America's greatest pastors. It is required reading in three Seminaries in the USA with more to come. It is changing lives in over 25 countries and all 50 States and has drawn high praise from dozens of evangelical and reformed leaders throughout the world, like: Jerry Bridges, Maurice Roberts, Ernie Reisinger, James White, Gordon Keddie, Tom Nettles, Joel Beeke, Conrad Mbewe, Geoff Thomas and Peter Jeffery.

"I have never read anything quite like A Pastor's Sketches and I really think that if God is pleased to bring days of great revival again, no Christian book could be more helpful at such a time to pastors than Spencer's book. A book of great relevance to pastors, it will be cherished just as much by all those spiritual minded men and women in our churches who do the bulk of the work of bringing the gospel lovingly, courageously and wisely to those around them. I really believe its impact could be revolutionary." - David Vaughn, missionary in France
"A Pastor's Sketches is a sobering and challenging reminder that the Holy Spirit is the true agent of conversion. This book is urgently needed today when so much of our evangelism is patterned after current marketing methods. It has deeply convicted me to always seek to be in tune with the Holy Spirit as I minister to others." - Jerry Bridges, author of numerous books
"We live in a day when it is rare for people to speak about their souls. But in times of revival such as that in which Ichabod Spencer lived, there was so much of the Holy Spirit's work in evidence in men's lives that ministers needed to address the most searching questions to their hearers. Few did this so well as Dr. Spencer, whose Sketches, which are here reprinted after a lapse of many years, are a veritable treasury of pastoral wisdom. They will amply repay careful reading by pastors and serious Christians in our day." - Maurice Roberts, former editor of Banner of Truth Magazine
"The Spencer extracts are superb and will be of great benefit when printed. This is very sobering but enlightening material. It is quite contrary to much of today's practice and all pastors need to read it." - Peter Jeffery, author of over 40 books
"Spiritual casuistry, or 'cases of conscience,' as it used to be called, is nearly a lost art today. Few seminaries train ministerial students how to dialogue with seeking souls, even though counseling a seeking sinner can be more challenging than preaching to a large congregation. That's part of what makes Spencer's book of dialogues with inquiring sinners so unique. Spencer is a master at flushing sinners out of hiding and directing them to Jesus Christ for salvation through Spirit-worked, simple faith.
Though I suppose few pastors would approve of every response Spencer makes to inquirers, in the main his spiritual counsel is biblical, doctrinal, practical, and experiential. His perceptive counsel certainly has produced much fruit. A Pastor's Sketches is a compelling read for pastors and Christian workers; its pages contain the nuts and bolts of biblical evangelism, taught via authentic dialogues." - Joel R. Beeke, president and professor at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary
"Dr. Spencer's book should certainly take a well-deserved place among the tools of any physician of souls. Anyone with the cause of Christ at heart will bemoan the fact that we have too many miscarriages in our evangelistic labor-wards. These sketches found in Spencer's book, together with the concluding lessons, will go a long way to bring back the biblical balance that we so desperately need if the preachers of the new millennium are to prove themselves to be able and true spiritual midwives. I have no doubt that its reprinting is long overdue." - Conrad Mbewe, pastor from Zambia

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - Solid Ground has joined hands with Granted Ministries to produce a smyth-sewn cloth-bound, shrink-wrapped edition of the Double Volume of A Pastor's Sketches. In addition to all that is found in the present paperback edition there are two important additions:
 (1) The first added appendix is a short and concise summary of every sketch, allowing readers to quickly find a case that is similar to the one with which they are wrestling.
 (2) The second added appendix is a short subject index based upon those summaries, directing readers to places where the various subjects are specifically addressed and dealt with more fully.

 | | | | THE GOLDEN BOOKLET OF THE TRUE CHRISTIAN LIFE John Calvin
Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life has inspired readers around the world for more than four centuries.
This classic devotional will guide you on how to apply the Christian faith in a balanced way to mind, heart, and hand. Originally part of John Calvin's Institutes, it covers themes such as obedience, self-denial, the significance of the cross, and how believers should live their lives today.
Rather than focusing on contemplative other-worldliness, the Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life stresses the importance of a devotedly active Christian life. In style and spirit, it is much like Augustine's Confessions, Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, or Thomas a Kempis's Imitation of Christ. Its intense practicality, however, sets it apart, making it easily accessible for anyone seeking to carry out Christian values in everyday life.
The translator, Henry J. Van Andel, competently preserved the colorful language and direct style of which John Calvin was a recognized master.

“The essays here do represent a serious engagement by a team of thoughtful Baptist pastors and theologians to come to grips with a major tension inherent in the Christian gospel itself. As such, it deserves to be read, discussed, and responded to.” --Timothy George, Dean, Beeson Divinity School, Author of Theology of the Reformers
“The issues in this book are essential to a consistent Theism. They are essential to any confession of divine rescue. They are an essential part of the very fabric of the biblical revelation of divine salvation. They are essential to a right understanding of the gospel. They are essential to a worship that would rightly acknowledge God as the Savior of sinners. And they are basic to a realized joy in God’s salvation.” --Fred Zaspel, Author of The Theology of B. B. Warfield, Pastor, Reformed Baptist Church of Franconia, PA
“The doctrines of grace, which form the subject matter of this book, have often proven to be the stuff of controversy in the church’s history. What I deeply appreciate about these studies of these precious truths, though, is the irenicism that informs them. And this is as it should be. To paraphrase the apostle: here we find the speaking of the truth about divine grace in love.” --Michael A.G. Haykin, Professor of Church History, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

click for details | | THE BUNYAN OF BROOKLYN: The Life and Practical Sermons of Ichabod Spencer Rev. J.M. Sherwood and Ichabod Spencer
The author of "A Pastor's Sketches" comes to life in this new paperback edition of his life and practical sermons. Everyone who has read the life-changing and ministry-transforming volumes of "A Pastor's Sketches" will be deliighted to learn more about the man whose life was used of God in such a mighty way from 1828 (when he began his ministry in Northampton. MA) to 1854 (when he concluded his ministry in Brooklyn, NY).
In addition to the helpful "Sketch" of his life by dear friend Rev. J.M. Sherwood, we have here 20 complete sermons that are called Practical Sermons drawn from his regular pulpit ministry in Brooklyn.
According to his Biographer, "One of the most prominent characteristics of Dr. Spencer's preaching was its Scriptural character. He emphatically preached the Bible, the whole Bible, and nothing but the Bible. He drew every sermon from it. He grounded every sermon upon the plain import of God's revealed Word. He made that Word his sole authority in all his teaching. The Bible was the staple of all his sermons. They were full of it; and drew their inspiration from it. It was the simple power of Scripture truth that he wielded with so much effect. He had no confidence in any other kind of teaching. He believed that his sole business in the pulpit was to unfold and vindicate, enforce and apply the meaning or truths of God's revelation. Hence he aimed steadily to exalt the Divine Word. He bowed always and most reverently to its authority."
"The reading of good sermons is the most underrated kind of Christian literature on the market today. In former centuries, the reading of sermons was the bulk of the mature Christian's reading diet. Most Puritan books, for example, are sermons edited for print. Sermon reading keeps believers in the Word, matures the soul, and whets the appetite for good preaching. It promotes Christ-centered thinking, healthy self-examination, and godly piety in every sphere of life. Though nothing can replace the Word preached, sermon reading has one advantage over preaching: the sermons that made it into print are usually the minister's best! Tolle Lege--"pick up and read" great sermon books, especially those of past centuries that are packed with spiritual meat, such as the sermons of Ichabod Spencer." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke

'When used slowly, for meditation and prayer, these pages have often been used by God's Spirit to kindle my dry heart.' --MARK DEVER
'The prayers in The Valley of Vision are steeped in Scripture, yet never succumb to mere formula. They are theologically fresh and vibrant, yet they are rooted in confessionalism. They range over a huge sweep of Christian experience and devotion, but they are never merely esoteric or cute. They brim with deep emotion and transparent passion, but they carefully avoid mere sentimentalism. This is a book that teaches readers to pray by example.' --D.A. CARSON
'The Valley of Vision is a wonderful collection of Puritan prayers which both help to shape and inform our own private devotions and, perhaps more importantly, aid pastors as they seek to lead their congregations in prayer and into the presence of God.' -CARL TRUEMAN
'I cannot commend enough The Valley of Vision, which is a compilation of over two-hundred pages of Puritan prayers (each of which are one page in length). I pray through one of these prayers every day. Sometimes the prayers are so meaningful and relevant that I will pray through the same prayer for days. This is a wonderful aid to supplement one s own prayers. Indeed, these prayers will also teach one how to pray, and, at the same time, they teach theological truth. I cannot think of any Christian who would not benefit from these prayers.' -GREG BEALE
'It's amazing how frequently the prayers from the little book The Valley of Vision show up in our worship services. The Valley of Vision is a collection of Puritan prayers, and I would put them in that category. That is, they are thoughtful, reflective, and meditative. They're even written in a certain kind of cadence, if you've ever noticed, which is probably very intentional, so that they might be used in corporate settings. But they came out of a deep heart of communion with God.' --JOHN PIPER
 SAMPLE
 The Valley of Vision
LORD, HIGH AND HOLY, MEEK AND LOWLY,
Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision,
 where I live in the depths but see thee in the heights;
hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold thy glory.
 Let me learn by paradox
that the way down is the way up,
that to be low is to be high,
that the broken heart is the healed heart,
that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,
that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,
that to have nothing is to possess all,
that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,
that to give is to receive,
that the valley is the place of vision.
Lord, in the daytime stars can be seen from deepest wells,
 and the deeper the wells the brighter thy stars shine;
Let me find thy light in my darkness,
 thy life in my death,
 thy joy in my sorrow,
 thy grace in my sin,
 thy riches in my poverty,
 thy glory in my valley.
 PREFACE
"The prayers in this book are drawn from the largely forgotten deposit of Puritan spiritual exercises, meditations and aspirations. They testify to the richness and color of evangelical thought and language that animated vital piety in an important stream of English religious life. It is hoped that their publication will help to redress the neglect of this vast ocean of Puritan spirituality. The Puritan Movement was a religious phenomenon of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, yet its influence continued at least to the time of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–92) who may be regarded as the last of the great Puritans. Although the political storm ended in 1660, its theological ground-swell carried forward distinct forms of practical religion for many decades, particularly family worship and private devotion. In these spheres, and in that of the authority of Scripture over the whole of life, New England Presbyterians and Congregationalists were at one with English Dissenters and Anglican evangelicals in a close-knit union that transcended differences of worship, discipline and polity. They spoke the same spiritual language, shared the same code of values, adopted the same attitude towards the Christian religion, and breathed out the same God-centered aspirations in a manner that makes it impossible to distinguish the voice of conformist from that of nonconformist. Thus, this book of Puritan prayers has a unity not often found in similar works. The strength of Puritan character and life lay in the practice of prayer and meditation. Many of those who held the doctrines of grace wrote down a record of God’s intimate dealings with their souls, not with an eye to publication, but, as in David Brainerd’s case, to test their spiritual growth, and to encourage themselves by their re-perusal in times of low spiritual fervor. Others, like William Jay and Henry Law, turned their personal devotions into corporate forms for family worship, and published them to the church at large. Yet others, such as Philip Doddridge and William Romaine, wrote prayers into their literary works in order to evoke the reader’s spiritual response. Many ministers went further and advised their congregations to put their private prayer thoughts on paper and vocalize them. There thus emerged an important corpus of inspiring Puritan prayers that are still largely unused.
In extracting this selection from Puritan literature it has been necessary to change some prayers from the plural and the third person into the singular and the first person in order that the book might be used chiefly in private devotion. But, by a change of pronoun, most of them can be employed in corporate worship. A final section has been added for occasions of corporate worship. Old idiom has been retained, but it has been necessary to reframe some phrases in order to accommodate archaic thought to modern understanding. A number of prayers were originally spiritual experiences, as in the case of Thomas Shepard, and some others are conflations from different sources to bind together a given theme. A poetic form has been adopted throughout as an aid to easier comprehension and utterance. Each prayer consists of a number of main clauses with subsidiary clauses that illuminate and enlarge the subject. In this way an opportunity is provided for pauses and reflections. The editor is thus responsible for the structure of the prayers as here printed. The book is not intended to be read as a prayer manual. The soul learns to pray by praying; for prayer is communion with a transcendent and immanent God who on the ground of his nature and attributes calls forth all the powers of the redeemed soul in acts of total adoration and dedication. The prayers should therefore be used as aspiration units, the several parts of which could become springboards for the individual’s own prayer subjects. These and their divisions can also serve homiletic purposes. The prayers are taken from the works of Thomas Shepard, Thomas Watson, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, Isaac Watts, William Williams, Philip Doddridge, William Romaine, David Brainerd, Augustus Toplady, Christmas Evans, William Jay, Henry Law and Charles Haddon Spurgeon. They are sent out with the prayer of Philip Doddridge, that, ‘However weak and contemptible this work may seem in the eyes of the children of this world, and however imperfect it really be, it may nevertheless live before thee, and through a divine power be mighty to produce the rise and progress of religion.’ I desire to thank the Rev. Iain H. Murray of the Banner of Truth Trust for his encouragement to produce this work, Mr. S. M. Houghton, many of whose kindly criticisms have been accepted, and the Rev. R. E. Davies, who helped to resolve theological points. I am grateful to the Trustees of the British Museum, Dr. Williams’ Library, and the Evangelical Library for access to out-of-print books. click for details | | HEAVEN UPON EARTH: Jesus, The Best Friend in the Worst Times James Janeway
James Janeway (1636-1674) was born in Hertfordshire, the son of a minister, at the end of 1636. He was educated at Christ's College, Oxford, and spent time as a private tutor in a home, as is true of many of the Puritans. He is listed as one of the ejected ministers of 1662. In 1672 his admirers built a large meeting house for him near London, where it is said that "he had a very numerous auditory, and a great reformation was wrought amongst many." But Janeway's popularity so enraged the Church of England that several times they threatened to shoot him, which was actually attempted on at least two occasions. On one of these occasions, Janeway was shot at, and the bullet pierced his hat, but did not harm his body. Soldiers destroyed the building in which he preached, but his congregation simply built another, larger one to accomodate all those who came to hear him preach.
"Heaven upon Earth is as precious as the finest gold. Its author, James Janeway, stirs the hearts of his readers, not to rest in a cold, speculative knowledge of God, but to seek that experimental knowledge of Him which enflames hearts, transforms lives, and affords unspeakable happiness throughout eternity. There is no friend in all the world Like Jesus Christ, our blessed Savior! So take this book, read it prayerfully, and discover for yourselves the intimacy of His blessed presence and company." -Malcolm H. Watts
As was true of many Puritan ministers, Janeway was afflicted with melancholy (depression), contracted tuberculosis, and died in his 38th year. The book for which he is most known is A Token for Children, in which he collected personal accounts of the conversions of a number of children in his parish, and published it. It became an effective evangelistic tool, and was the most widely read book in nurseries in England next to the Bible and Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. The New England preacher Cotton Mather regarded that book so highly that he wrote his own version of it and called it A Token for the Children of New England.
The cover image is the painting of The Great Fire of London from 1666 which took place at the very time Janeway was delivering these addresses. The complete sub-title of this Puritan masterpiece is: Jesus, the Best Friend in the Worst Times, being an earnest exhortation to get acquainted with God, as the only way to real good and blessedness.

This volume has been produced with the utmost care to recreate the original edition as it was. This is a project of a local church in Birmingham, Alabama and is truly a labor of love.
"I have been collecting editions of 'The Pilgrim's Progress' for 25 years and this is undoubtedly my favorite. It is a faithful reprint of an 1891 edition. The cover is a work of art. The 170 illustrations inside are beautifully done and very helpful to visualize what Bunyan has in print. This oversize book is great to gather the family around and read together. The education of a child is not complete until they have read this complete edition of Bunyan's immortal work." - Pastor Mark Liddle, Dominion Baptist Church, Birmingham, AL
JOHN BUNYAN [1628-1888] was C. H. Spurgeon's favorite author and his legendary work, THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS, is the most popular book ever written apart from Holy Scripture. Spurgeon loved reading and re-reading this work, claiming to have read it over 100 times!many times with his wife reading it to him in afternoon relaxation and meditation. He often quoted Bunyan in his sermons declaring, "Though his writings are charmingly full of poetry, yet he cannot give us his Pilgrim's Progress, that sweetest of all prose poems, without continually making us feel and say, 'Why, this man is a living Bible!' Prick him anywhere, his blood is Bibline, the very essence of the Bible flows from him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is FULL of the Word of God."

Fear is one of the strongest human emotions, and it is one that often baffles Christians.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” —Proverbs 1:7
Fear is one of the strongest human emotions—and one that often baffles Christians. In the Bible the picture can seem equally confusing: Is fear a good thing or a bad thing? And what does it mean to “fear the Lord”?
In Rejoice and Tremble, Michael Reeves clears the clouds of confusion and shows that the fear of the Lord is not a negative thing at all, but an intensely delighted wondering at God, our Creator and Redeemer.
Also available as a concise version: What Does It Mean to Fear the Lord?
 TABLE OF CONTENTS
Chapter 1: Do Not Be Afraid!
 Chapter 2: Sinful Fear
 Chapter 3: Right Fear
Chapter 4: Overwhelmed by the Creator
Chapter 5: Overwhelmed by the Father
Chapter 6: How to Grow in This Fear
 Chapter 7: The Awesome Church
 Chapter 8: Eternal Ecstasy
 ENDORSEMENTS
“Modern people often view the fear of God with disdainful suspicion, but Michael Reeves shows us that godly fear is really nothing other than love for God as God. Reeves also helps us to see that the greatest factor in promoting the fear of God is knowing his grace in Christ. As John Bunyan said, ‘There is nothing in heaven or earth that can so awe the heart as the grace of God.’ This wonderful book not only teaches but sings, leading us to ‘rejoice with trembling’ (Ps. 2:11).” --Joel R. Beeke, President and Professor of Systematic Theology and Homiletics, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary; author, Reformed Preaching; coauthor, Reformed Systematic Theology
“We used to sing a hymn that said, ‘O how I fear Thee, living God! With deepest, tenderest fears.’ No longer. But the hymn’s first lines remind us of what we are missing: ‘My God, how wonderful Thou art, Thy majesty, how bright.’ Only those who find God to be ‘wonderful’ and his majesty ‘bright’ experience the ‘tenderest’ fear. So we have a problem; but thankfully help is at hand in Rejoice and Tremble. Like an elder brother, Michael Reeves guides us into a fresh understanding of the fear of the Lord. On the way, he introduces us to some of his friends—masters in the school of discipleship—who have walked the path before us. Join him on the journey. You will soon discover why ‘the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him’ (Ps. 147:11).” --Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, the Bible says, and reading this book will make you wise—wise to who God is and what God requires of us by way of loving, responsive discipleship. Packed full of historical nuggets, Rejoice and Tremble deserves to be widely read. ‘Walking in the fear of the Lord’ is language that has largely disappeared from the contemporary church. The result is the insipid quality of a great deal of current Christianity. Recapturing the sense of God’s incomprehensible greatness and holiness is the needed antidote this book provides. An absolute gem of a book.” --Derek W. H. Thomas, Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries; Chancellor’s Professor, Reformed Theological Seminary
“Ours is a day of great fears—fear of financial collapse, fear of terrorist attacks, fear of climatic disasters, fear of a deadly pandemic—all kinds of fears, except the most important of all: the reverential fear of God. How needed then is this marvelous study of a much-neglected theme, one that is central to the Scriptures and vital to human flourishing.” --Michael A. G. Haykin, Chair and Professor of Church History, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
“Michael Reeves has given us something we badly need and likely haven’t realized—a fresh encounter with the thrilling fear of the Lord. This book will bring renewed devotion and delight. Having read it, I can’t wait to read it again!” --Sam Allberry, pastor; author, 7 Myths about Singleness

click for details | | PUBLICATIONS OF THE AMERICAN TRACT SOCIETY: Volumes One - Six Various Authors
The American Tract Society began to publish the very best of evangelical Christian Literature in the early years of the 19th century. They not only produced books from men like John Owen, John Bunyan, Jonathan Edwards and many, many more but they also were faithful to produce Tracts of various sizes (between 4 and 48 pages) which addressed such topics as-
 - THE DAY OF JUDGMENT, THE DAY OF TRIAL, DO YOU LOVE GOD?
 - COUNSELS TO A YOUNG MAN, THE TEMPTATIONS OF YOUNG MEN
 - PRIVATE DEVOTION, DO YOU PRAY IN YOUR FAMILY? By William Nevins
 - COME AND WELCOME TO JESUS CHRIST by John Bunyan
 - THE DECAY OF SPIRITUAL AFFECTIONS by John Owen
 - WALKING BY FAITH by Andrew Fuller,
 - AN ADDRESS TO SEAMAN by Edward Payson
 - THE SINNER DIRECTED TO THE SAVIOR by John Flavel
 - THE SABBATH A BLESSING TO MANKIND by Gardiner Spring
 - THE WELL-SPENT DAY by Philip Doddridge,
 - GROWTH IN GRACE by Rev. Thomas Goodwin
 - A Preservative against the Sins and Follies of Childhood and Youth by Isaac Watts
 - QUESTIONS AND COUNSEL By Ashbel Green
 - THE PROGRESS OF GRACE; in three letters to a friend by John Newton
"The American Tract Society publications are of enduring and superlative quality. They represent the cream of the best writers in the Reformed world from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, such as John Flavel, Jonathan Edwards, and Archibald Alexander. Almost without exception, these tracts, which range from four to forty-eight pages each and cover a remarkable variety of subjects, interface biblical, doctrinal, and experiential material in practically helpful ways. Having often perused these volumes in my own study with considerable profit for nearly four decades, I am so grateful to SGCB for bringing them back into print again. Here is truly a case where 'the old is better'!" - Dr. Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan
"The early publications of the American Tract Society are as valuable as they are varied. The individual pieces were written by well-seasoned Christians and abound in sweet seasoning for the soul. Something here for everyone."- Dr. Robert P. Martin, Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle, Washington and Editor of Reformed Baptist Theological Review
"The collected tracts are a veritable treasure chest of good sound doctrine from the greatest proclaimers of gospel truth the church has had for the last 300 years. You would be doing your soul a tremendous dis-service if you fail to obtain these gems!" - Dr. Don Kistler, founder of Soli Deo Gloria and now Northampton Publications
"My study of ministry during the 1800's has caused me to love these ministers and their writings. The American Tract Society took theses stories, sermons and messages and published them into a format that gospel messengers could take to the harvest field. Though small, these tracts contain more meat of the word and truth than books many times their size." - John A. Wega, Executive Director, U.S. Christian Commission-Civil War Museum Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

click for details | | THE CHRISTIAN'S PRESENT FOR ALL SEASONS: Containing Devotional Thoughts of Eminent Divines Joseph Hall, Isaac Watts, John Owen, Richard Sibbes, John Flavel, Jonathan Edwards, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, William Jay and More
An Introductory Essay on "Devotion" by William B. Sprague sets the stage for a rich devotional journey from Joseph Hall to William Jay. This volume was published in 1866 by The American Tract Society and it contains dozens and dozens of brief devotional exercises to stimulate the brethren to love and good works. The contributors to this volume are a veritable who's who in evangelical circles from the Puritan era to the mid-nineteenth century. The Names are as follows:
JOSEPH HALL - RICHARD SIBBES - JEREMY TAYLOR
ROBERT LEIGHTON - RICHARD BAXTER - JOHN OWEN
WILLIAM BATES - JOHN FLAVEL - STEPHEN CHARNOCK
JOHN BUNYAN - JOHN TILLOTSON - ISAAC BARROW
JOHN HOWE - EZEKIEL HOPKINS - THOMAS KEN
THOMAS COMBER - BENJAMIN JENKS - MATTHEW HENRY
THOMAS WILSON - ISAAC WATTS - THOMAS ADAM
PHILIP DODDRIDGE - JONATHAN EDWARDS - JOHN WESLEY
WILLIAM ROMAINE - ROBERT WALKER - SAMUEL DAVIES
JOHN NEWTON - THOMAS SCOTT - JOHN LOGAN
TIMOTHY DWIGHT - ANDREW FULLER - ROBERT HALL
JOHN MASON - THOMAS CHALMERS - REGINALD HEBER
EDWARD BICKERSTETH - WILLIAM NEVINS - WILLIAM JAY
W.B. Sprague concluded his Introductory Essay with these words: "Among the many excellent works adapted especially to help the Christian in his devotions, this book holds a prominent place. The Compiler seems to have ranged through almost the whole field of devotional literature, and to have gathered up all the brightest gems that came in his way; and so successful has he been that one may open the book at random, as often as he will, and will never find his eye resting upon anything that he can afford to pass over, or that does not supply the elements of rich devotional thought. It is difficult to say which is most to be admired, the Compiler's good judgment and taste, or his extraordinary patience in research, that has brought to us the heavenly thoughts of so many saints and sages. This is truly a beautiful compilation of DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS."
D.A. Harsha, the Editor, said the following in his Preface: "It is more than ten years since the preparation of the present volume was commenced. During all this time, the selection of these beautiful passages has been slowly but steadily carried on. The work was undertaken in connection with the editing of a Library of Christian Authors, embracing Memoirs of Eminent Divines, and their choice works--a series whose preparation is not yet completed. In performing this long and arduous labor, and while carefully perusing the works of our best authors, from the 17th century to the present time, passages in each author, which the editor regarded as among the finest specimens of devotional and practical writing, were selected for the present volume. In this manner have these 'calm and holy thoughts' of those who have shone as stars in the firmament of the Christian Church, been brought together; and it is believed that in the following pages will be found some of the choicest gems of English sacred literature--gems which 'within small compass, and in purest gold, will preserve their lustre for ages.'"
"We sometimes sing the opening lines of Psalm 63 with these words:
'GOD is my great desire, His face I seek the first
To him my heart and soul aspire, For him I thirst.'
This book of devotions by such eminent saints makes it irresistible because the fervent desires of our hearts for GOD Triune must be fed." - Erroll Hulse
"This is sweet food from savory writers. Perfect for the breakfast table, the bedside, the bathroom, red lights, or anywhere else where a minute or two can be redeemed for your soul's nourishment." - Dr. Robert Martin, Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle and Editor of Reformed Baptist Theological Review
"A quick scan of the table of contents makes clear that this book could be referred to as the hall of fame of devotional literature. Theological depth and practical application define the writings of men like John Flavel, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, Matthew Henry and the rest of the authors of this book. This book would make a wonderful gift for any occasion of the year. The recipient of such a gift would have a library in one volume of some of the greatest minds in Christian history. This book would be useful in leading family worship because it would expose your family to classic reformed theology in a devotional format. Buy this book in bulk, keep a copy for yourself and pass down the truth by giving your remaining copies away." - Ray Rhodes, Jr. is President of Nourished in the Word Ministries and author of two Solid Ground Books, "Family Worship for the Reformation Season" and "Family Worship for the Christmas Season."
"In a day of time-sensitivity when every minute and hour seems to be at a premium, the leisure our forebears had for reading seems a pipe-dream for most of God's people. What is the solution? We need better stewardship of our time, for starters. But also we need books like this one that distill the riches of eminent divines from the past and give them to us in succinct packages that will stay with us through the day and week.I am glad to see this marvellous collection reprinted by Solid Ground Christian Books." - Dr. Michael Haykin
One book notice said, "A collection of the holiest aspirations of the holiest men."

"This work attempts to trace the footsteps of a great circumnavigator in the divine life, somewhat as an open boat might follow in the wake of the ships of Columbus into a new world. And yet it is not new, but as old as the grace of God in the heart of sinful man; and now, so many have crossed the sea, and prepared charts and maps of their passage for the use of others, that there is scarcely a league over which some compass has not been drawn, or into which some fathoming line has not been let down; though there is scenery still hidden, and there are depths never yet sounded, nor ever will be, inasmuch as the grace of God in the heart of man is unfathomable; and in sailing over this ocean we can often do no more than cry out with the apostle Paul, 'O the depths!' There is always much that is peculiar with every individual mind in crossing this sea; and likewise in following the traces of so experienced and wise a navigator as Bunyan every individual will find something new to remark upon; so that these lectures, though on an old subject, will not necessarily be found commonplace, or monotonous, or superfluous.

This excellent commentary on Pilgrim's Progress consists on 10 Lectures.
The first nine lectures cover Pilgrim's Progress: Part One, and the final lecture covers the journey of Christiana to the Celestial City.
These are spiritually enriching lectures that will not only help you appreciate Pilgrim's Progress, but also the Bible itself.

 ENDORSEMENTS
“The apostle Paul prayed that Christians would have strength to comprehend the dimensions of Christ’s love together ‘with all the saints’ (Eph. 3:18), and there is a sense in which that should be both our own prayer and our approach when we study any biblical truth or indeed any passage in Scripture. But how can we ordinary Christians do this without access to a vast library of resources from the two-thousand-year history of the church? The ESV Church History Study Bible is one very substantial and wonderfully helpful answer. Here, without detracting from the importance of being able to ‘read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest’ the Word of God itself, readers are invited to sit down with some of the greatest and most spiritually tuned minds of the ages and engage in Bible study together with them. They may not be ‘all the saints’ but they are certainly ones you would choose to help you in Bible study! The ESV Church History Study Bible promises to be a long-lasting gift to every Christian home and will provide a lifetime of help and encouragement.” -Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries
“I want my preaching to reflect biblical insights from the past as well as the present. So, my preparation typically includes commentary from the church fathers, Reformers, Puritans, and other leaders from church history. Now the ESV Church History Study Bible puts those riches within easy reach of every student of the Word of God. This new resource will help pastors and other Bible teachers expound, illustrate, and apply the Scriptures with greater clarity, creativity, and conviction.” -Philip Graham Ryken, President, Wheaton College
“The ESV Church History Study Bible is an exceptional resource merging the clarity of the ESV translation and the rich history of the Christian church. Containing valuable articles and commentary from the church’s most trusted historians and theologians, this study Bible allows readers to peer through the windows of each era of church history where the mighty acts of God are unmistakably on display. May God use this volume to ignite a new generation of believers passionate about the past, present, and future in which God’s plan continues to unfold in Jesus Christ.” -Dustin Benge, Associate Professor of Biblical Spirituality and Historical Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, The Loveliest Place
“The same Holy Spirit who inspired the Scriptures has illumined the church to receive and understand it. We do not read the Word of God as the first ever to do so but in a long line of those whom the Spirit has taught and from whose insights we continue to benefit. The ESV Church History Study Bible brings the fruit of that light to enrich our study of God’s Word.” -Alan D. Strange, Professor of Church History, Mid-America Reformed Seminary
“It is a great joy and a true blessing to read Scripture with God’s saints across the generations. The ESV Church History Study Bible is an impressive resource that has tremendous potential to strengthen and deepen people’s faith. Take and read.” -Timothy Larsen, McManis Professor of Christian Thought, Wheaton College
“It is said we stand on the shoulders of giants. In this unique study Bible, readers will be connected with the voices of the faithful from generations past. This will enhance the reader’s worship of God and enrich their understanding of the faith once for all delivered to the saints.” -John Mark Yeats, Professor of Church History, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

 | | | | VOICES FROM THE PAST: Puritan Daily Devotional Readings (Two Volume Set of Readings) Compiled by Richard Rushing
VOLUME ONE: 428 Page Beautiful Hardcover with Dust Jacket
TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING! This work has long been anticipated. Glean from the wisdom and spiritual depth of the Puritans during 2010 through these 365 daily readings.
Over the past fifty years there has been a great resurgence of interest in the writings of the Puritans. The reading of their works has brought great benefit to the people of God in many lands. Christians from many different backgrounds and cultures owe a great debt of gratitude to those faithful pastors and preachers who continue to speak through their writings even though they have long since entered into their heavenly reward. The Puritans really knew how to teach and apply God's Word in the Spirit's power!
Richard Rushing has compiled this book of daily devotional readings from his favourite Puritan authors because of the great help he has gained from their Works. 'How thrilling it has been for me to read the Puritans on the glory and attributes of God, divine providence, fellowship with God, holiness of life and the mortification of indwelling sin, heavenly mindedness, prayer, evangelistic zeal, and trust in the Lord during times of affliction. At every turn these truths are eloquently taught, faithfully applied, and kindly offered as the subject of sweet spiritual meditation.'
This book is sent forth with the prayer that it will open a door to the vast stores of treasure to be found in the writings of the Puritans and that it will stimulate further exploration of this rich spiritual inheritance.

VOLUME TWO: 432 Page Beautiful Hardcover with Dust Jacket
Richard Rushing has compiled a further 365 daily devotional readings to take you through the year with the Puritans. Building on Voices from the Past (volume 1), Voices From the Past 2 is an additional treasury of wisdom from such authors as Stephen Charnock, Thomas Manton, David Clarkson, Thomas Brooks, John Bunyan, and Jonathan Edwards, and others.
The editor has painstakingly selected these readings from their sources, some of which are still widely available in print, others of which are more scarce. Readers will find these choice extracts to be excellent ‘thoughts for the day’, and will frequently find themselves wanting to explore more of the writings of these authors of the past.

Geoffrey Thomas has lived a memorable life. But despite his achievements, he tells his story as a man comfortably living in the shadow of something and Someone greater. Geoff shares his upbringing in Wales, his ministerial training in the United States, and his family life and ministry that stretched over fifty years at Alfred Place Baptist Church in Aberystwyth. Throughout the book, the winsome Welshman introduces us to a host of leaders he has befriended over the years, giving a valuable perspective on the transatlantic evangelical scene. And most of all, you will read of Geoff’s love for the Rock of his salvation.
 PREFACE by the Author
"Why did Augustine of Hippo in Roman North Africa write his auto-biographical work, Confessions? What was the reason John Bunyan, while serving a twelve-year prison sentence in jail in Bedford, England, penned his autobiography, 'Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners'? Why did George Whitefield choose, at age twenty-six, to publish his Journals, other than 'for the Benefit of the Orphan-house in Georgia.' For what purpose did John Wesley publish his vast Journal? Why did C. H. Spurgeon tell his own life story? What provoked Elisabeth Elliot to publish the diary of her first husband, Jim Elliot? And why did Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones cooperate fully with Iain H. Murray in the writing of two volumes of his life?
Surely none of them did it for 100 percent completely spiritual reasons; we are too corrupted by sin to hit that target in anything. But they believed that their personal dealings with God and the impact of their lives on the people around them could be helpful for readers. How right they were.
Certainly none of them made that choice for purely carnal and self-promoting reasons, but as in everything they did—and that we do—there’s a mixture of the flesh and the Spirit. “Vanity of vanities...all is vanity” (Eccl. 12:8). Even the holiest things we have done have some pollution of sin.
It was Spurgeon who made the best defense of the reason for writing about himself: “Whether this arises from egotism or not, each reader shall decide according to the sweetness or acidity of his own disposition. A father is excused when he tells his sons his own life-story, and finds it the readiest way to enforce his maxims; the old soldier is forgiven when he ‘shoulders his crutch, and shows how fields were won.’ I beg that the license which tolerates these may, on this occasion, be extended to me.”
I wrote these chapters as an extension of my ministry and my vocation to proclaim the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ and that I might further the end of the calling I believe I had received from God to explain the message of Christianity and to make known the whole counsel of God. And in this, as in all else, there is some success and some failure. These are bigger illustrations and smaller statements of important truths that I have believed all my Christian life."

 ENDORSEMENTS
“For fifty years, Geoff Thomas has been my mentor and friend. His weekly emails recounting details of encounters and observations are often priceless. If I were forced to list my top five preachers, his name would be there. As a young Christian at Aberystwyth University in Wales, his mentorship and care for me proved definitive. I would not be where I am today without his guiding, supportive hand. He has preached all over the world, met and kept extensive diary-like notes of conversations with thousands of people, remained in the one church for over half a century, and influenced generations of preachers. That he should write a self-deprecating autobiography is a measure of the heart of this man. His autobiography is a window into the evangelical/reformed church of the last seventy years and more. I predict that this book will be widely read and talked about for years to come.” —Derek W. H. Thomas
“For some time now, Geoffrey Thomas has been in the habit of sending out occasional letters that reflect on God and the gospel, his travels and life, and people and movements in the Christian world. They are gems. Well, reading these autobiographical reflections is like receiving an eleventy of these letters at one fell swoop! This volume of reminiscences is enthralling, winsome in its wisdom, and a fabulous window on God's work in one influential life, for Geoffrey Thomas has indeed had a profound influence for good in the Christian world, and especially among those people who are Reformed in their theology and vision of church life. It was a recommendation by Geoff to an Baptist elder in Belfast in 2000 that led to my being involved in Ireland, both the North and Eire, for two decades now—and I thank God for the author of this book and the fruit of Geoffrey Thomas' ministry and life. —Michael A.G. Haykin, Professor of Church History, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
“Biographies and autobiographies usually make for fascinating reading. This volume will not disappoint. Yet it is more than the story of one faithful man’s ministry in ‘Aber’ for fifty years. The reader will gain perspective on the twentieth century as Geoff weaves his own story into the religious climate in Wales either side of World War II. The recovery of historic biblical Christianity is portrayed through his eyes. There are also delightful cameos of his professors at Westminster Seminary, of men who were his friends and had a formative influence on him, and also of some who were converted to Christ under his preaching ministry. The author has been candid and is very aware of his shortcomings but at the same time very conscious of divine mercy and grace that sustained him for those fifty years.” —Austin Walker, formerly pastor of Maidenbower Baptist Church, Crawley, UK
“By the time Geoff Thomas began his long ministry in Aberystwyth, the tide had gone out, leaving the churches in Wales high and dry. The higher critical movement had robbed us of the gospel. I arrived in Aberystwyth in 1968, converted, called to preach but lacking any models or mentors. I learned to preach by listening to Geoff and by devouring the books he recommended . And I saw firsthand how the ascended Christ uses a local church for the advancement of his kingdom in the world.
With disarming frankness, Geoff looks back over a lifetime of faithful, fruitful gospel ministry and shares with us the influences that shaped him, and the highs and lows of pastoral ministry. He speaks about his own mistakes and failures with refreshing honesty and self-deprecating humour. But at the same time there is no mistaking the high view he has of the call to full time ministry. “What a marvellously privileged life we lead,” he says, of the gospel minister.
This book is full of so many rich, instructive brief bios of teachers and colleagues in ministry, some relatively unknown, some household names in the evangelical world. Of particular interest are the vivid little cameos of the Westminster faculty. What a privilege to have such teachers. How vital it is for a lifetime of ministry to set yourself up with the best possible theological education. And how blessed we who came under the influence of this man and his ministry.” —David N. Jones, Hobart, Tasmania, Presbyterian Church of Australia
“I was under the ministry of Geoff Thomas during my doctoral studies at the university in Aberystwyth. His book is a magnificent work of autobiography. It provides the reader with a fascinating account into the life, upbringing, and influences upon this well loved and respected pastor and preacher who for over fifty years was a minister in Aberystwyth. This autobiography also provides fascinating glimpses into life at Westminster Theological Seminary in the early 1960's, into the church scene in Wales during the 20th century as well as the establishment of a couple of confessional Christian churches in mid Wales in both the Welsh and English languages.” —Jean-Marc Alter, school teacher and contributor to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
“You can hear Geoff Thomas as you read this book. There is a generosity of spirit that gushes through the written word as it flows in his preached words, a love for his Lord, for people, for the Church, for his Baptist form of Calvinistic Methodism, for Wales, for Aberystwyth, for the people of Alfred Place. The anecdotes about and insights into his esteemed teachers at Westminster Theological Seminary are a treat. His openness about his own perceived failings and the troughs and peaks of his long ministry at Alfred Place, Aberystwyth, are lessons in honesty. We learn about many much loved people and a multifaceted pastoral ministry. Read it, be challenged, and be refreshed.” —Mostyn Roberts, minister at Welwyn Evangelical Church, Herts., UK
“A man who has ministered for 50 years in a single congregation and remains as enthusiastic for the ministry as when he first began is a man who needs to write his autobiography. For those who know Geoff this book will fill you with thankfulness to God for him and his influence, for those of you who don't know Geoff personally it will be an introduction to one of the most remarkable ministers I've ever known. I'm delighted he has written his story." —Paul Levy, minister at the International Presbyterian Church, Ealing, London
“This is a lively and engaging account of the life and ministry of one man, but it also sheds fascinating light on the state of Christianity in Wales and beyond in recent times. It demonstrates the value of faithful biblical preaching in bringing people to Christ, in building up believers in the faith, and in challenging the widespread godlessness in both the Church and society at large.” —Gwyn Davies. An elder in the Aberystwyth Welsh Evangelical Church
“This personal account of Pastor Geoff’s life makes for a thoroughly enjoyable read, containing a bright array of personal and historical anecdotes, written in a warm and lucid manner. There is openness and honesty, the confession that not all has been as it could have been – a feature so helpful to those of us whose ministries have witnessed relatively little fruit. The brief biographical and eirenically-written sketches provide flashes of fascinating insight; the tracing of historical associations serve to deepen the understanding of evangelicalism, especially here in Wales. Geoff is eager that Christ be glorified, and especially through good theology. This account of his life as a minister of Christ’s Gospel serves to do this. It has been a joy and a privilege to have read this book and it comes with a warm recommendation.” —Gareth Williams, minister Bala Evangelical Church and lecturer Union Seminary
“Geoff Thomas. One of Wales’ best known preachers during the 20th/21st centuries. Pastored a church in Aberystwyth for 50 years, influenced many of us, preached in congregations and conferences around the world as well as writing helpful books and many articles. Godly, wise, interesting, funny and good company! And now his life story in print. It is everything I was expecting and more. The story is fascinating and the way it is written, a real page turner. This deserves a wide audience. One of the true servants of the Lord Jesus.” —Alun Ebenezer, headmaster Fulham Boys School, London
“Geoff is like Boris. He doesn’t need a surname. If a fellow pastor tells me that Geoff’s preaching, or that he’s had a letter from Geoff, I don’t need to ask which Geoff. For countless reformed Christians and especially pastors, there’s only one Geoff. He’s mentored us, encouraged us, inspired us and befriended us. He’s taught us to preach by preaching to our minds and hearts. He’s counselled us through tangles we’ve got ourselves into. He’s driven hundreds of miles to speak at our little meetings. We owe him more than I can say. And here it is at last - Geoff Thomas’s autobiography. All you ever wanted to know about Geoff’s forebears, his upbringing, his conversion and call to the ministry, his heroes, his teachers, his love for the USA, that extraordinary half-century of ministry in Aberystwyth, and so much more beside. Geoff's memoirs are fascinating, moving, self-deprecating, Christ-honoring and at times gloriously indiscreet. Thank you Geoff.” —Stephen Rees, minister at Grace Baptist Church, Stockport
“A year or so after Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones had delivered his Westminster seminary lectures, ‘Preachers and Preaching,’ I asked him for his opinion of Westminster. He paid high tribute to the quality of its scholarship and teaching and to the way in which its professors had upheld the Reformed Faith in the face of considerable opposition. However, his concern was that ‘They are not producing preachers.’ I interjected, ‘But what about Geoff Thomas?’ He replied, ‘Yes, he is a preacher, but he comes from a different tradition.’ In this fine autobiography we can see the outworking of that tradition and ways in which it has been enriched from other tributaries to produce a Reformed pastor and teacher whose appeal has extended far beyond his native Wales. Geoff was converted in Welsh Evangelicalism as a teenager at a time when Nonconformity as a whole was suffering from the debilitating effects of liberal theology. More recently however, a number of congregations were being blessed were by the emergence of a generation of younger preachers who, encouraged by the ministry of Dr. Lloyd-Jones had discovered something of the Biblical strength of an older Dissent. The university Christian Unions were being strengthened at the same time. Geoff’s own thinking was undoubtedly sharpened by his years at Westminster Seminary after his graduation from Cardiff. At Westminster he was profoundly influenced by Scottish Highland theology and piety of Professor John Murray. However, he came back to Wales, still a Baptist and was called to his only pastorate, at Aberystwyth in the heart of the Principality. There he served supported by his beloved Iola and their three daughters Calls to preach came from far and wide and he was at home among conservative Presbyterians as well as Reformed Baptists, ever ready to minister to small groups as well as large congregations. How we thank God for the help and encouragement that he has given to us. Now in retirement from his pastorate and living in London with Barbara, his second wife, he continues to serve the wider cause with God-given energy.” —Robert W. Oliver, pastor emeritus at the Baptist church, Bradford on Avon. Church history lecturer at the London Seminary

 | | | | TAKING HOLD OF GOD Reformed and Puritan Perspectives on Prayer Edited by Joe Beeke and Brian Najapfour
In 'Taking Hold of God', you will enter the treasury of the church of Jesus Christ and discover some of its most valuable gems on the subject of Christian prayer. The writings of the Reformers and Puritans shine with the glory of God in Christ, offering us much wisdom and insight today that can make our own prayer lives more informed, more extensive, more fervent, and more effectual. Six contemporary scholars explore the writings and prayer lives of several Reformers and Puritans-among them Martin Luther, John Calvin, William Perkins, Matthew Henry, and Jonathan Edwards-guiding us to growth in prayer and a more grateful communion with God.
 Endorsements:
"Taking Hold of Godis a veritable gold mine on the subject of prayer. Beeke and Najapfour have brought together in one volume the teaching on prayer of the giants of the Reformation and Puritan eras: Luther, Calvin, Knox, Perkins, Bunyan, Henry, Edwards, and others. I was personally encouraged and stimulated to take my own prayer life to a higher and hopefully more productive level. All believers who have any desire to pray effectively will profit from this book." -Jerry Bridges, author of The Pursuit of Holiness
"Together, Beeke and Najapfour have produced a marvelously helpful and instructive volume on prayer drawn from such giants as Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Bunyan, Matthew Henry, and Jonathan Edwards. It is a veritable potpourri of spiritual insight and godly advice. Books on prayer often induce more guilt than help. Taking Hold of God, as the title itself suggests, aims at doing the latter. It beckons us, allures us, into the challenge of prayer itself: laying hold of a gracious Father who longs for our presence and delights to commune with His children. If you aim to read just one book on prayer this year, choose this one." - Derek W.H. Thomas, Professor of Systematic and Practical Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, MS

SIGHS FROM HELL: The Groans of a Damned Soul by John Bunyan
This book is especially timely in light of Rob Bell's recent book release called "Love Wins," in which he denies a literal hell, other than the one we make for ourselves. But over 300 years ago John Bunyan wrote this little work in which he exposits the story in Luke 16 of Dives and Lazarus, and shows biblically that hell is quite literal---at least Jesus thought so!
This book has been slightly updated as to language and grammar. It is hardbound and printed on acid-free paper. While this work of Bunyan's is not as well known as "Pilgrim's Progress," it is very important, particularly for evangelism. This is what sinners need to be saved from!
An exposition of those words in Luke 16 concerning the rich man and the beggar wherein is discovered the lamentable state of the damned: their cries, their desires in their distresses, with the determination of God upon them; a good warning word to sinners, both old and young, to take into consideration quickly, and to see by faith in Jesus Christ to avoid, lest they come into the same place of torment.

 GREAT NEWS!
SOLID GROUND Has Published a New Edition of "FAREWELL SERMONS: Addresses from Some of the Most Eminent Nonconformist Ministers of the Great Ejection of 1662
The following paragraphs from Original Preface will explain the power in this volume: "Most of the sermons contained in this collection were delivered on the twenty-fourth of August, in the year 1662. On that day the act requiring a perfect conformity to the book of Common Prayer, and to the rites and ceremonies of the church took place: the effect of which enactment was the silencing of nearly two thousand five hundred ministers, the death of three thousand nonconformists, and the ruin of sixty thousand families. Such was the result of the restoration of Charles the Second of infamous memory.
To ascertain the spirit which actuated the ejected ministers, it is sufficient to refer to the following selection of their farewell sermons, which were delivered at the very moment they were agonizing under the fangs of persecution, but which discover nothing but a combination of christian graces. Bishop Burnet admits that 'many of them were distinguished by their abilities and their zeal '; and the celebrated Locke has remarked, 'Bartholomew-day was fatal to our church and religion, by throwing out a very great number of worthy, learned, pious and orthodox divines.'"
C.H. Spurgeon said, "Those great preachers whose names we remember, were men who counted nothing their own: they were driven out from their benefices, because they could not conform to the Established Church, and they gave up all they had willingly to the Lord. They were hunted from place to place, they wandered here and there to preach the gospel to a few. Those were foul times; but they promised they would walk the road fair or foul, and they did walk it knee-deep in mud; and they would have walked it if it had been kinee-deep in blood too. But now we are all little men, there is scarce a man alive now upon this earth."
John Bunyan, who spent 12 years in Bedford jail for his Nonconformity, said, "I fought till my sword did cleave to my right hand; and then they were joined together, as if a sword grew out of my arm; and when the blood ran through my fingers, then I fought with most courage."
Iain Murray wrote, "John Stoughton has described the Sunday upon which most of the Farewell Sermons were preached: 'No Sunday in England ever resembled exactly that which fell on the 17th of August, 1662, one week before the feast of St Bartholomew. There have been "mourning, lamentation, and woe," in particular parish churches when death, persecution, or some other cause has broken pastoral ties, and severed from loving congregations their spiritual guides; but for many hundreds of ministers on the same day to be uttering farewells is an unparalleled circumstance. In after years, Puritan fathers and mothers related to their children the story of assembled crowds, of aisles, standing-places and stairs, filled to suffocation, of people clinging to open windows like swarms of bees, of overflowing throngs in churchyards and streets, of deep silence or stifled sobs, as the flock gazed on the shepherd - "sorrowing most of all that they should see his face no more." ' It is well for us to bear such a background in mind as we read the following pages. The atmosphere of that day was electric and charged with emotion; the popular discontent was great and strong guards stood ready in London, but these sermons seem far removed from all that. There is a calmness, and unction and a lack of invective. Great though their sorrow was for their flocks and for their nation, they had a message to preach which was more than equal to the strain of the crisis. An eternal God, an Ever-Living Saviour and a glorious hope of heaven, carried them through this heaviest trial."
Don Kistler, founder of Northampton Press, said the following about this volume: "This is a precious volume, because it is the last sermon many of these Puritan pastors preached to their congregations before they were forced out of their pulpits. Yet you will not find any bitterness or acrimony in their sermons. Instead, they do what they had done every other Lord's Day: They preached the glories of Christ.
First published in 2 volumes in the 1600's, then retypeset in 1816 in a single volume, and then published again in 1992, this wonderful collection of Puritan sermons is now available once again. Who knows when it might be available after this edition is gone? Do not miss this opportunity to have this marvelous work. You will be the richer for it. Also, this will likely be your only chance to read sermons by some of the lesser-known, but not lesser-important men represented here, such as Lazarus Seaman, Thomas Lye, George Evanke, and Thomas Jacomb. Solid Ground is to be commended for choosing to reprint this work. Now commend them yourself by purchasing it!"
Ray Rhodes, founder of Nourished in the Word Ministries just added: "If writing makes a man more precise in his communication then writing under persecution further clarifies the message. Some of history's richest sermons have been preached and books written when the author was under either the threat or the actual fires of suffering. The authors of these "Farewell Sermons" are some of the brightest lights in all of Puritan history. Each word, sentence, and paragraph hits the target. Words cannot be wasted when life hangs in the balance. Do you want your character strengthend and your faith deepened? Read these sermons that have been washed by the tears of those who were persecuted for righteousness sake."
Robert Paul Martin, author of 'A Guide to the Puritans' wrote - "Simply one of the finest volumes ever published. The farewell sermons of great Puritan preachers. What more could we ask?"
 CONTENTS OF THIS INCREDIBLE VOLUME
1- Edmund Calamy - Sermon from 2nd Samuel 24:14 "Let us Fall into the Hand of the Lord"
2- Thomas Manton - Sermon from Hebrews 12:1 - "The people of God that have such a multitude of examples of holy men and women set before them, should prepare themselves to run the spiritual race with more patience and cheerfulness."
3- Joseph Caryl - Sermon from Revelation 3:4 - "In which encouragement I told you we might consider two things, or take it into two parts. First, " That they should walk with Christ." Secondly, " They should walk in white."
4- Thomas Case - Sermon on Revelation 2:5 - "CHRIST here prescribes precious physic for the healing of this languishing church of Ephesus; it is compounded of a threefold ingredient: 1. Self-reflection, " Remember from," &c. 2. Holy contrition and humiliation before the Lord, " Repent." 3. Thorough reformation, " Do thy first works."
5- William Jenkyn - Morning Sermon on Hebrews 11:38 - "The apostle in this excellent chapter, (that by some is deservedly called a little book of martyrs) discovers the triumph of faith, or victory against all difficulty we meet with."
6- William Jenkyn - Afternoon Sermon on Exodus 3:2-5 - "First then, for explanation, I shall here endeavour to open these two things to you: first, what it is for a place to be holy, or wherein the nature of the holiness of the places consists ; secondly, what that is, that is the foundation or cause of the holiness of places; and both these must in our discourse, and likewise apprehension, be accurately distinguished."
7- Richard Baxter - Sermon on Colossians 2:6,7 - "Omitting the division, and in part the opening of the words, the observation is ; - " That those that have received Christ Jesus the Lord, must accordingly be rooted, built Up in him, and established in the faith; and walk in him as they have been taught, and abound therein with thanksgiving."
8- Thomas Jacombe - Morning Sermon on John 8:29 - The observation I intend to speak to, shall be this: They that please God, and endeavour always to do the things that please God, such God will be with; such the Father will not leave alone; especially in times of suffering and trouble, for I will bring it to that case.
9- Thomas Jacombe - Afternoon Sermon on John 8:29 - Let me endeavour to prevail with every one of you, so to carry yourselves in your several places and capacities, that whatever you do, you may please God.
10- William Bates - Morning Sermon on Hebrews 12:20,21 - Now in these two verses he sums up, by way of recapitulation, all that which he had discoursed of at large, and in them you may observe these two things. 1. A description of God, to whom he addresses this prayer: The God of Peace. 2. The substance of the prayer itself.
11- William Bates - Afternoon Sermon on Hebrews 12:20,21 - It follows " that great Shepherd of the sheep." For the opening of this, 1. We will consider the title of Christ. 2. The person for whom this title relates.
12- Thomas Watson - Morning Sermon on John 13:34 - Doctrine. Christians ought to make conscience of this duty of loving one another. Confident I am, we shall never see religion thrive in the world, until we see this grace of love flourish in the heart of christians.
13- Thomas Watson - Afternoon Sermon on 2 Corinthians 7:1 - It is the title that I intend now, by the help of God, to insist upon, that sweet parenthesis in the text, "dearly beloved," wherein you have the apostle breathing forth his affections unto this people. He speaks now as a pastor, and he speaks to them as his spiritual children.
14- Thomas Watson - Farewell Sermon on Isaiah 3:10,11 - This text is like Israel's pillar or cloud; it hath a light side, and a dark side: it hath a light side unto the godly, "Say unto the righteous, it shall be well with him;" and it hath a dark side unto the wicked, "Woe unto the wicked, it shall be ill with him." Both you see are rewarded, righteous and wicked; but here is a vast difference, the one hath a reward of mercy, the other a reward of j ustice.
15- Thomas Lye - First Sermon on Philippians 4:1 - I shall without any more ado enter upon the text; in which you have two things considerable. A most melting compellation, and a most serious exhortation. 1. A melting compellation, "my brethren, dearly beloved," &c. 2. A serious exhortation; and in it first, the matter of the duty, stand, and stand it out, and stand fast. Secondly, the manner. First, so stand, so as you have stood, stand fast. Second, in the Lord; stand so, and stand in the Lord, in the Lord's strength, and in the Lord's cause.
16- Thomas Lye - Second Sermon on Philippians 4:1 - "It is the grand and indispepsable duty of all sincere saints, in the most black and shaking seasons, to stand fast fixed and stedfast in the Lord."
17- Matthew Mead - Sermon on 1 Corinthians 1:3 - Being therefore now to part, I thought to go to the top of the mount, and leave with you grace and peace from God our Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ. In which words there are two generals. 1. A double blessing desired: Grace and Peace 2. A double spring discovered: that is the Father and the Son, God and Christ.
18- Matthew Newcomen - Sermon on Revelation 3:3 - There are three doctrines obvious in the text; Doctrine 1. That it is the duty of christians, to remember those truths that they have heard and received. Doctrine 2. That it is the duty of christians to hold fast the truth that they have heard and received. Doctrine 3. That continued repentance is the duty of christians, as well as initial repentance. Remember therefore how thou hast received, and heard, and hold fast and repent.
19- Thomas Brooks - Sermon on Questions Asked and Answered followed by 27 Legacies that Brooks Left to his Beloved People
20- John Collins - Sermon on Jude 3 - These words contain two parts. 1. A duty exhorted to. 2. The manner of the management of duty. The duty exhorted to, is, to retain the faith delivered to the saints. The manner of its management is, that we should earnestly contend to keep it.
21- Edmund Calamy - Sermons 1 Samuel 4:13 - I shall gather two observations from the words. 1. That when the ark of God is in danger of being lost, the people of God have thoughtful heads and trembling hearts. 2. That a true child of God is more troubled, and more solicitous what shall become of the ark, than what shall become of wife and children or estate.
22- John Gaspine - Sermon on Luke 12:32 - The text contains that exhortation of Christ, wherein he exhorts them to undauntedness and resolution in the ways of God. " Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." The words may be divided into these two parts. First, Here is an exhortation: "Fear not, little flock." Secondly, The reason of this exhortation: "for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom."
23- Lazarus Seaman - Sermon on Hebrews 13:20,21 - In which words, there are two two things considerable. 1. The matter of the apostle's prayer. 2. The grounds, which he doth insinuate for audience.
24- George Evanke - Sermon on Matthew 26:39 - Doct. A gracious soul will endeavour the crossing his own will, when be sees that it crosses God's. Or, thus, A true Christian dare not, at least ought not, to gratify his own humour when it stands in opposition, or cometh in competition with God's honour.

click for details | | THE WORKS OF JOHN BUNYAN (IN THREE HARDCOVER VOLUMES) JOHN BUNYAN
John Bunyan is best known for his famous allegorical works, Pilgrim’s Progress and The Holy War, his autobiographical Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners and his allegorical novel The Life and Death of Mr. Badman. While justly famous for their literary merit, their real importance lies in Bunyan’s portrayal of the sin of man, the grace of God and the nature of the Christian’s life. These themes were Bunyan’s great passion, and for them he was prepared to suffer the hardship of imprisonment. But his exposition of them was not confined to allegory, and in his many other works, like Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ and An Exposition of the First Ten Chapters of Genesis, we find Bunyan writing as the outstanding pastor-evangelist he was.
Individual volumes of the best-known of Bunyan’s writings have long been available. These three quality volumes, first edited by George Offor (1853 and 1862) constitute the only available standard edition of his works.

 ENDORSEMENTS
“Having already opened the eyes of the body of Christ to its treasury of devotional poetry in The Soul in Paraphrase, Leland Ryken now widens our vision to take in the depth and breadth of two millennia of devotional prose. Running the gamut from the giants of the genre (Augustine, John Donne, Jonathan Edwards, Martin Luther, Brother Lawrence, Blaise Pascal, Julian of Norwich, Bernard of Clairvaux) to writers we do not usually identify with devotional writing (Florence Nightingale, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, George MacDonald, Jane Austen, George Washington Carver), The Heart in Pilgrimage conducts its readers on a spiritual journey that is well worth taking.” -Louis Markos, Professor in English and Scholar in Residence, Houston Baptist University; author, The Myth Made Fact: Reading Greek and Roman Mythology through Christian Eyes
“This collection gives the gift of informed access to a great mixed chorus of voices with often surprising words that prick our imaginations and our hearts of faith. Even as we read and celebrate a glorious heritage of devotional expression, we are drawn ultimately to worship the glorious Lord God of the Scriptures who created us human beings and redeemed us through his Son.” -Kathleen Nielson, author; speaker
“This is an edifying volume of diverse devotional texts skillfully excerpted and each followed by a brief overview. The texts span centuries, and Ryken’s editing makes them very accessible. The texts are marked by artful and clear expression, and all invite readers to open their hearts to God and experience his grace.” -James C. Wilhoit, Professor of Christian Education Emeritus, Wheaton College
“Whenever I am asked to recommend a volume that combines literary study with sound Christian teaching, I recommend Leland Ryken. His new collection of rich devotional literature will move to the top of my list of recommended works. The Heart in Pilgrimage is a treasury of wisdom and beauty to which readers will return again and again.” -Karen Swallow Prior, author, On Reading Well: Finding the Good Life through Great Books
“Like cool water to a parched throat, Leland Ryken has produced a soul-quenching gift with this collection of devotionals. Filled with beautiful writing devoted to an even more beautiful subject, The Heart in Pilgrimage delivers the truths of the Christian faith through masterful expression, promising to awaken fresh affections for the Lord among believers of every stripe.” -Collin Huber, Senior Editor, Fathom Magazine
Leland Ryken (PhD, University of Oregon) served as professor of English at Wheaton College for nearly fifty years. He served as literary stylist for the English Standard Version Bible and has authored or edited over sixty books, including The Word of God in English and A Complete Handbook of Literary Forms in the Bible.

The Surprising Good News of the Fear of the Lord
“Let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.” —2 Corinthians 7:1
We all have experienced fear at some point. And if we are honest, we don’t usually think of fear as a good thing. So why does the Bible call us to fear the Lord? In this book, Michael Reeves explains that the fear of God is not a gloomy fear marked by anxiety but a heartfelt and happy enjoyment of God as Creator and Redeemer. As we learn more about the surprising good news of the fear of the Lord, we will discover the vital role we play in displaying to the world the awesomeness of our God.

2:11).” -Joel R.
So we have a problem; but thankfully help is at hand in What Does It Mean to Fear the Lord? Like an elder brother, Michael Reeves guides us into a fresh understanding of the fear of the Lord. On the way, he introduces us to some of his friends—masters in the school of discipleship—who have walked the path before us. Join him on the journey. You will soon discover why ‘the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him’ (Ps. 147:11).” -Sinclair B.
Packed full of historical nuggets, What Does It Mean to Fear the Lord? deserves to be widely read. ‘Walking in the fear of the Lord’ is language that has largely disappeared from the contemporary church. The result is the insipid quality of a great deal of current Christianity. Recapturing the sense of God’s incomprehensible greatness and holiness is the needed antidote this book provides. An absolute gem of a book.” -Derek W.
How needed then is this marvelous study of a much-neglected theme, one that is central to the Scriptures and vital to human flourishing.” -Michael A. G. Haykin, Chair and Professor of Church History, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

 | | | | A PURITAN THEOLOGY: Doctrine for Life Joel Beeke & Mark Jones
Finally, the perfect companion to MEET THE PURITANS, this volume may be the most thorough volume ever produced on PURITAN THEOLOGY. The first printing of this volume sold out within the first few weeks and a second printing is already available.
Pastor Rob Ventura has said the following: ""What did the Puritans believe about God's providence and the perseverance of the saints? What were their views on conscience and Christ's intercession for us? In 'A Puritan Theology' compiled by Dr. Joel R. Beeke and Mark Jones, we have the answers to these and many other questions. In this unique one volume work we have a robust systematic theology drawn from the teachings of the most beloved Puritans: an outstanding achievement indeed! This resource is a must read for every pastor, seminarian and serious student of the Reformed Faith. It will be a volume that I turn to again and again."
Joel Beeke begins the Introduction with these words: "The word 'Puritan' originated in the 1560s as a bit of pejorative hurled at people who wanted further reformation in the Church of England. While some social historians think the term should be abandoned due to the various ways it was used during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, others who identify themselves as Reformed or Calvinistic defend the continuing use of the terms 'Puritan' and 'Puritanism.'
This book is about Puritan theology. Its chapters will address various areas of the systematic theology of Puritanism. Fine studies on Puritan theology already exist. Some address the Puritans in general, and some focus on the work of a particular Puritan theologian. To date, however, there has been no single work that provides an overview of Puritan thought concerning Scripture's major doctrines, historically and systematically considered. We hope this book will fill that gap. We will begin by stating what we will and will not cover, and why."

click for details | | MOODY CLASSICS Augustine, Bounds, Bunyan, Spurgeon, Ryle, Meyer, Muller, Sanders, Stone
We are offering the following 9 Classics from Moody Press. You can order any of these titles or all of them for a deeper discount. GREAT FOR A GIFT TO A NEW CHRISTIAN, OR A CHURCH OR SCHOOL LIBRARY.

 (1) ALL OF GRACE: Salvation is of the LORD by C.H. Spurgeon
 C. H. Spurgeon writes, "Only God can justify the ungodly, but He can do it to perfection. He casts our sins behind His back; He blots them out. He says that though they be sought for, they shall not be found... The doctrine of the atonement is to my mind one of the surest proofs of the divine inspiration of Holy Scripture. Who would or could have thought of a just Ruler dying for the unjust rebel? "

 (2) POWER THROUGH PRAYER by E.M. Bounds
Pastor and civil war chaplain E. M. Bounds penned his slim classic on prayer for the simple reason that Christians don't pray enough. "The little estimate we put on prayer is evident from the little time we give to it," he wrote. "Talking to men for God is a great thing, but talking to God for men is greater still."

 (3) THE CONFESSIONS OF ST. AUGUSTINE
That Augustine was one of the greatest minds who has ever been in the church is a given, and his most well-known work, the Confessions, has a unique place among the world's great classics. The line that appears in the opening paragraph of Book 1, "our heart is restless till it rest in thee," is quoted everywhere, though not everyone who quotes it or hears it knows where it came from and may even think it's a biblical saying.

 (4) THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS by John Bunyan
Join Christian and his companions on their journey to the Celestial City, as they pass through many experiences common to us all, in Bunyan's timeless allegory of the Christian's walk with God.

 (5) HOLINESS: Its Nature, Hindrances, Difficulties and Roots by J.C. Ryle
J.C. Ryle's Holiness has imparted a standing challenge to Christians for 130 years. In this new, slimmed-down series of excerpts from Ryle's masterwork, we aim to present his original message to a whole new generation. Holiness, Ryle argued, was not simply a matter of believing and feeling, but of doing.

 (6) THE INCOMPARABLE CHRIST by J. Oswald Sanders
Author J. Oswald Sanders, a lawyer turned 20th century missionary statesman, follows Jesus from His pre-existence to His earthly life and coming Second Advent. Throughout it all he upholds Jesus as the powerful and perfect Savior of the world, arguing against any who would diminish His uniqueness.

 (7) THE SECRET OF GUIDANCE by F.B. Meyer
 F. B. Meyer writes, "The grace of purity and self-control, of fervent prayer and understanding in the Scriptures, of love for men and zeal for God, of lowliness and meekness, of gentleness and goodness - all is in Christ; and if Christ is in us, all is ours also."

 (8) ANSWERS TO PRAYER by George Muller
Prayer was the vital component of George Mueller's nineteenth-century ministry to England's orphans. Through his narrative account, Mueller reveals how powerful and spiritually rewarding prayer can be in your life.

 (9) NAMES OF GOD by Nathan Stone
Nathan J. Stone writes, "Indeed we cannot say all that the mysterious word God means to us until we know more about Him." God's many names reveal not only different dimensions of His character but also point to their fulfillment in the Person and work of Jesus Christ. This insightful little book accurately and clearly works through the many names of God throughout the Old Testament. We can now see God in new lights and angles as we learn of His justice, His unbounded love, His preeminence, and His character - all through His names. This book has sold over 400,000 copies.

"Joel Beeke's 'FIGHTING SATAN' anchors in the bedrock of a noble exposition of the Christian life viewed as homo viator (the pilgrim traveller) embattled in a war with Satan at his heels. It is in the same line as Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, William Gurnall's 'The Christian in Complete Armour', or Thomas Brooks' 'Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices.' Succinct and deeply pastoral, Dr. Beeke's little volume has all the marks of a Christian classic. Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest and get ready to fight the good fight of faith. This will help you view the Celestial City and the assurance of victory in Jesus Christ." - DEREK W. H. THOMAS

 | | | | FOUR PACK FROM CANON PRESS RICHARD HANNULA
 (1) TRIAL AND TRIUMPH: 46 Gripping Stories from Church History
Christianity is a faith in love with history. God took on human flesh and dwelt among us. The Spirit carried that divine work over the centuries, providing courage and maturity even amid our imperfections. Christians find their true family line not through tribes and ethnic blood but in the bond of faithfulness and shed blood that has united our family for millennia. We too often view Church history as the story of obscure aliens instead of the lives of brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers.
In this collection of forty-six brief biographies for children, Hannula sketches the stirring trials and triumphs of many famous and some lesser known figures in our family of faith—including Augustine, Charlemagne, Anselm, Luther, Bunyan, and C.S. Lewis. Through them we can begin to enjoy the old paths and find rest for our souls. "Thus says the LORD: Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls"(Jer. 6:16).
"Here are forty-six gripping stories of men and women of Christ from Polycarp to C.S. Lewis and Richard Wurmbrand! The whole family will be able to read, enjoy, and celebrate these gifts of God to His Church." -Dr. David Calhoun, Professor of Church History, Covenant Seminary
"What better way to bring a Christian child to aspire to spiritual greatness than to set before him or her the heroes of the Church's past and a picture of godliness and fortitude in flesh and blood. It is the Bible's own way to train up children in the faith. We used these sketches in our family worship. Our children enjoyed them at first reading and have remembered them since. I enthusiastically recommend Hannula's Trial and Triumph." -Dr. Robert Rayburn, Faith Presbyterian Church
"Restoring the Christian story requires giving an important place in Christian consciousness to the heroes of the whole church ... A wonderful beginning has been made by Hannula in his Trial and Triumph." -Dr. Peter Leithart, Theopolis Institute
"An excellent overview of great figures in church history in one volume." -Jeff Robinson, The Gospel Coalition

 (2) RADIANT: Fifty Remarkable Women in Church History
From South America to Europe, from China to Africa to the Wild West, in prisons and in throne rooms, many great Christians have left a stunning legacy for their successors. These short and moving biographies for young people introduce fifty often unfamiliar champions of the faith: women like Ida Kahn, who opened the first hospital in a Chinese city of 300,000 people; Lady Anne Hamilton, who rode with the Covenanter cavalry at the decisive Battle of Berwick; and Anngrace Taban, who was forced to type secret battle plans for the Sudan People's Liberation Army. In a culture where women's role in society is often at question, these examples of faithfulness can remind us that courage and godliness are possible anywhere, even if you are surrounded by Muslim raiders, Japanese guards, Nazis, or cannibals.
"Through these robust and hearty profiles Richard Hannula brings to life fifty women of faith who helped shape church history. His interest is authentic, his research is solid, and his admiration is genuine." -Joel Belz, founder of World Magazine
"Women have made a vital contribution to the growth and progress of the Christian Church since the beginning. Hannula recognizes and celebrates that contribution and rallies the rising generation of Christian women to lives of action, vitality and faithfulness. A great read!"" -Gwen Westerlund, author of Faithful Following and Telling the Next Generation
"From the time of Christ's ministry on earth until the present day, faithful women have left us a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and service in the midst of trials. In this new collection of stories, Richard Hannula has given us a rich resource of encouragement and inspiration."" ~-Nancy Wilson, author of Praise Her in the Gates
"It is deeply encouraging to find Christian historians and authors beginning to recognize the important role played by women in the history of God’s people, and pen both popular and more academic studies of this important subject. ...a good representation of the globalization of the Christian faith in the past two hundred years." -Michael A.G. Haykin, Professor of Church History The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

 (3) FOR CHRIST'S CROWN: Sketches of Puritans and Covenanters
Whether Edward Dering preaching boldly before a fuming Queen Elizabeth, or Sandy Peden evading the king's men on horse, or Hugh Mackail undergoing the torture of "the Boot" and then execution for his faith, the Puritans' and Covenanters' courage and conviction shines as bright as ever today. In this collection of thirty brief biographies (with seven illustrations), Hannula brings these stories to life, both for young people who should grow up knowing their spiritual ancestors and the heroes of our faith, and for adults who need to make their acquaintance for the first time.
Because of the fierceness with which they were persecuted, many left Britain for America to worship God in the manner they wished to. If we are to truly understand ourselves, our theological heritage, and our current situation, we need to know the stories of these brave and faithful men and women and the legacy they left.

"From the world of Pilgrim's Progress comes this heroes' gallery of brave believers who would suffer for their convictions rather than betray them. Though angled for youth, these vivid vignettes will touch every Christian heart." -J. I. Packer, Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
"Accurate history... Lively style...This book is a joy to read, and a challenge to faith and obedience." -David Calhoun, Professor of Church History Emeritus, Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri
"Richard Hannula's historical sketches of eminent Christians are a treasure to mine. The brief biographies are engaging, instructive, deeply humbling, and Christ magnifying. Highly recommended." -Ian Hamilton, Minister of Cambridge Presbyterian Church, Cambridge, England

 (4) HERALDS OF THE REFORMATION: 30 Biographies of Sheer Grace
The Reformation was an era with many examples of remarkable faithfulness, courage, and learning. However, few Christians today are familiar with their spiritual ancestors, the men who are responsible not only for much of our current understanding of the Bible and the Christian gospel, but also for the massive explosion of the Gospel all over the world today. If we want to continue to bear witness to the truth as faithfully as our fathers in the faith, we need to know their stories. Hannula's book includes thirty short, but profound stories of Reformation-era courage. They can easily be read aloud to children or used by homeschoolers as part of their curriculum. Additionally, this book includes an overview of key events in the Reformation, a detailed Timeline from 1516 to 1598, seven short summaries of Reformation Basics, and comprehension questions and answers on all thirty biographies.
"Richard Hannula has an eye for personal heroism and a flair for writing simply and vividly about it. Here he spotlights thirty Reformation stalwarts who gave their lives, all metaphorically, a number literally, to advance the gospel, make Christ known and save souls. From start to finish, a gripping read." -J.I. Packer, Professor of Theology, Regent College
"These lively and engaging biographical vignettes stretch from the forerunners of the Reformation like John Wycliffe to the great Scottish reformer John Knox. In an age of unworthy anti-heroes, here is a treasure trove of true heroes for children and parents alike." -Terry L. Johnson, Senior Minister, Independent Presbyterian Church
"With engaging style, Heralds of the Reformation vividly portrays the outpouring of the Spirit of God as men, women and children rediscovered salvation by God's grace alone through faith alone in Christ." -Ron Bergey, Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament, John Calvin Seminary

click for details | | A CHOICE DROP OF HONEY FROM THE ROCK OF CHRIST THOMAS WILCOX
Thomas Wilcox (1621-1687) was a seventeenth-century Particular Baptist who should not be forgotten. The traits that marked the lives of other notable seventeenth-century Baptists, such as John Bunyan and Benjamin Keach, marked the life of Thomas Wilcox. In the face of great opposition, Thomas fought for the purity of church worship and paid the price for living out his convictions.
The Baptist historian Thomas Crosby recorded that Thomas Wilcox was “two or three times put into Newgate (prison) for Nonconformity.” Thomas is best remembered for a wonderful little book that he wrote before the Great Fire of London in 1666—A Choice Drop of Honey from the Rock Christ. This book has gone through many editions and translations. Though a small book, it has been greatly used by God throughout the centuries. And though it has often been reprinted, it has fallen out of print in our day. Thus, it is our pleasure to bring this treasure back into circulation.
It is our hope that this book and its author, Thomas Wilcox, will not be forgotten in our generation.

click for details | | FROM GRACE TO GLORY: A Present Day Journey Through John Bunyan's 'Pilgrim's Progress' CAROLYN STALEY
BRAND NEW TITLE IS NOW IN PRINT!
Carolyn Staley has been serving as a pastor's wife for over 45 years and she has been laboring over this exposition of PILGRIM'S PROGRESS for the last ten years.
In her own words from her Preface we read: 'My journey to the Celestial City began at the age of nineteen when the Lord opened my heart, brought me to the Lord Jesus Christ, and saved me by his grace. In those early days as a young Christian, my tendency toward morbid introspection caused great mental anguish concerning the assurance of my salvation. During that dark period, I first became acquainted with John Bunyan when I was given two of his books, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners and The Pilgrim's Progress. At first I was actually afraid to read them, afraid that they would confirm my worst fears.
However, as I began to read and ponder these works written so long ago, a glimmer of hope began to arise in my mind. I was not alone after all! John Bunyan suffered the very same things and wrote of them. At last I could give a name to the spiritual turmoil I had so often experienced. It was the murky Slough of Despond. The tormenting fear that so often held my heart and mind captive also had a name, Doubting Castle, baronial estate of Giant Despair. Thus I felt an immediate affinity with the humble tinker of Bedford that greatly encouraged me in those first days of my own pilgrimage.
Many years later when I was asked to teach The Pilgrim's Progress to our teenagers in Sunday school, I gladly accepted the challenge and began an in-depth study of that great work. Using those early lessons as a foundation, I later expanded and revised them into a series of thirty meditational studies that were published in Adam's Rib, a monthly periodical especially designed for Christian women. These meditations provided the framework for an even more comprehensive study that resulted in the writing of this book.
I truly believe that we write best of what we have learned from personal experience. At this point in my own journey, I have covered much of the ground that John Bunyan's pilgrim did and met the same characters he encountered along the way. As a result, I am well acquainted with the places Christian visited, as well as the trials, temptations, and difficulties he faced. An added benefit from the Lord is the privilege of being married to a godly pastor who faithfully expounds and teaches the Word of God. For the past forty-five years, I have served by my husband's side as his helper and co-laborer. The experience I have gained through the years and the spiritual lessons learned have been of invaluable assistance in giving me a more thorough understanding of The Pilgrim's Progress.
This best known work by John Bunyan is a captivating story told in a highly dramatic setting; but for those with eyes to see, it is much more than that. The truths of which he wrote are just as relevant to the people of God today as when he penned them in the 17th century. Therefore, every true child of God will find that he is on familiar ground when reading of Christian and his journey to the Celestial City."
A strong endorsement was sent by Mack Tomlinson, Pastor of Providence Chapel, Denton, Texas-
"I am so glad this wonderful commentary on John Bunyan's 'The Pilgrim's Progress' will soon be available! I have been looking forward to it for a long time. When I first read through the manuscript, some of my first thoughts were, "This is wonderful! Here is insightful interpretation, rich exposition, and wonderful practical application for the Christian life--this is truly quality, insightful, and excellent in every way!" Carolyn Staley has truly captured Bunyan's heart in understanding his classic work.
From the introduction and all the way through all fifty-three chapters of the wonderful work, Mrs. Staley has provided a marvelous gift to God's people in writing this superb work of exposition on Bunyan's masterful allegory. This book possibly breaks brand new ground in expounding on Bunyan's character of Christian as he journeys to the celestial city. While reading, I gained valuable new insights on certain points I have never seen or considered, and Bunyan's views on certain points were opened to me more than ever.
As is stated in the preface, the author considers at length the characters and places of Christian's pilgrimage, and has successfully endeavored to interpret Bunyan's lessons in light of the truth of Scripture. One of the great blessings of the book is the great number of scripture passages Mrs. Staley uses to interpret Bunyan's truth on the Christian life and journey. What a marvelous group study this volume will make! I heartily recommend it for that specifically.
Especially for those who have never read The Pilgrim's Progress, this book will yield rich treasures as one reads it along with Bunyan's work or just reads it by itself. Carolyn Staley has given Christ's church a marvelous book for generations to come, and I hope everyone who hears of it will buy it. I am persuaded that those who read it will be very thankful they did!"

"We have used Peter Jeffrey's 'Seeking God' for many years to show unbelievers of all ages how to 'seek the Lord while He may be found'. It has proved most effective in special Sunday School classes, as a popular item on our tract rack with visitors and in believers' personal distribution to their friends. Seeking God shows you how to seek God, cautions you how NOT to seek God and encourages you as to why it all matters. Unlike so much fluff today, this is older, wiser, biblical counsel from a veteran 'obstetrician of souls.'" - Steve Martin, Former Executive Director of ARBCA

click for details | | LOOKING UNTO JESUS: A Classic Puritan Devotional Gem ISAAC AMBROSE (1604-1664)
THIS WORK IS A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF JESUS WITH WARM EXHORTATION, ENCOURAGEMENT, AND INSTRUCTION, BY AN AUTHOR WHO SEEKS TO SEARCH SCRIPTURE AND APPLY IT TO ALL OF LIFE.
This book was written after a serious illness which led the author to meditate deeply on what the Lord Jesus had done for him. He considers in detail different facets of the person and work of Christ. The work is divided into five sections.
Book I is an introduction to the subject, in which the author urges the reader to focus on Jesus exclusively.
Book II considers the eternal generation of the Son and “the great treaty in eternity [between] God and Christ to save souls.”
Book III considers Christ as promised throughout the Old Testament in “covenants of promise” manifested to Adam, Abraham, Moses, David, and Israel.
Book IV contains six parts that address Christ’s conception, the years of His ministry, His suffering on the cross, His resurrection, His ascension, and His intercession.
Finally, Book V examines Christ’s second coming, Judgment Day, and His relationship with the redeemed for all eternity.
'Looking unto Jesus' has been compared to the writings of John Bunyan due to its impact on many Christians in their walk with God. The author follows every major doctrinal section with practical application aimed at the heart. On the subject of temptation he writes, “Christ was tempted that he might succor them that are tempted: never art thou tempted, O my soul, but Christ is with thee in the temptation: he hath sent his Spirit into thy heart to make intercession for thee there; and he himself is in heaven, making intercession and praying for thee there.”
ISAAC AMBROSE was born in England in the year 1604. He was a Puritan nonconformist during a turbulent time of English history and suffered ejection from the pulpit as a result of the Act of Uniformity of 1662. Despite the political and social upheaval surrounding him, it has been remarked that his writings are surprisingly free of controversy, focusing mainly on experiential Christianity. After the Act of Uniformity, he lived among friends until his death in 1664.

click for details | | THE TRAVELS OF TRUE GODLINESS from the beginning of the world to this present day : in an apt and pleasant allegory Benjamin Keach
Benjamin Keach (1640-1704): important Particular Baptist preacher, author, and ardent defender of Baptist principles, even against Richard Baxter. Often in prison and frequently in danger for preaching the Gospel, he was the first to introduce singing hymns in the worship of English congregations.
"After defining godliness and showing its worthy pedigree and antiquity, 'the excellent Benjamin Keach' (as he was fondly called), allegorically personifies 'Godliness,' much as Bunyan did 'Christian.' He introduces us to more than two dozen enemies of godliness, then details Godliness's encounters with several of them, including apostasy, hypocrisy, legalism, antinomianism, worldliness, and Satan. We meet in graphic detail the temptations of youth and old age, of riches and poverty, as well as the joys of contentment, thoughtfulness, kindness, and love. This is a fascinating read by the most important Baptist thinker of his day, designed to stir us up to a greater pursuit of godliness." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan
"While The Pilgrim's Progress is the most famous of the Christian journey allegories of the seventeenth century, it is not the only one. Though nearly forgotten today, Benjamin Keach's 'The Travels of True Godliness' was in the eighteenth century nearly as popular as Bunyan's great work. It is a great blessing to see it back in print. We hope that many will read, enjoy and benefit from it." - Dr. James M. Renihan
"Most modern men don't think deeply. If there is something called 'true godliness,' for a contrast to stand, there must also be a form of religion that is not true and straight, but false. The former is rare in the world; the latter abounds even in the churches. "The Travels of True Godliness" is a road map for and about those on God's narrow way. For others, if the directions of God go unheard and unheeded, 'true godliness' will remain a quaint curiosity on the road to destruction." - Dr. Mike Renihan
"Those who adopt as one of their modes of benevolence, the distribution of awakening tracts, will find this happily suited to their purpose, and adapted to a great variety of characters. To Christians it will prove an excellent closet companion, containing judicious and satisfactory helps to self-examination, and designating the true and false marks of grace with remarkable precision. May the divine blessing attend it." - from the Preface by Howard Malcolm, editor of this revised edition, dated June 1, 1829

click for details | | THE GLORY OF GRACE: An Introduction to the Puritans in Their Own Words Selected and Introduced by Lewis Allen & Tim Chester
Who were the Puritans? What did they seek to achieve? What were their successes and failures? Are they of any importance to Christians today?
We firmly believe that all Christians need to discover the important story of how these men and women sought to follow Jesus Christ. Their convictions resulted in a brave and joyful faith, and the writing they have left us on the Christian life continues to be a rich resource for our own discipleship. Meeting the Puritans by listening to them has enriched both of us more than we can express. And so, in The Glory of Grace, we want to introduce you to people who had a deep love for Jesus Christ and a great vision for the Christian life. We all have much to learn…
Each chapter contains a concise introduction followed by carefully selected excerpts from key Puritan works, together with suggestions for further reading.

click for details | | THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS: Edited by George Offor, including Bunyan’s own Marginal Notes JOHN BUNYAN
THIS IS A COMPLETE, UNABRIDGED EDITION CONTAINING THE ORIGINAL MARGINAL NOTES OF JOHN BUNYAN.
Other than the Bible, there is no book written in the English language that has been published more than “The Pilgrims Progress”, by John Bunyan. We believe there are two primary reasons for this. First, the book is thoroughly and eminently Scriptural. But secondly, and just as importantly, it is profoundly practical, being a deeply experiential and spiritual account of the realities of the true Christian call, conversion, walk, opposition, and spiritual rewards, both temporal and eternal; all applied to pilgrims of various gifts and capacities.
The main reason this particular edition of Pilgrims Progress was selected is because the original editor, George Offor, carefully reviewed all eight of Bunyan’s own editions being careful to produce a copy that adhered strictly to Bunyan’s own revisions of the text. But in addition, Offor was also careful to include Bunyan’s Marginal Notes. Bunyan himself provided these notes and insisted that they were one major key to understanding the text, the other being the illuminating work of The Spirit. We have made no changes to Offor’s/Bunyan’s text in this edition. May it be blessed to your soul as it has been to millions before you is our prayer.
Charles H. Spurgeon loved reading and re-reading this work, claiming to have read it over 100 times! Quite often his wife read it to him in the afternoon for relaxation and meditation.
George Whitefield said of this book, "It smells of the prison. It was written when the author was confined in Bedford jail. And ministers never write or preach so well as when under the cross: the Spirit of Christ and of Glory then rests upon them."
John Newton added, "Of all our author's writings, there is no one perhaps so universally and deservedly admired as his Pilgrim's Progress, in which he gives a delineation of the Christian life under the idea of a journey or a pilgrimage, from the City of Destruction to the heavenly Jerusalem. In this treatise Bunyan appears not only as a writer well instructed in the mysteries of the kingdom, but a man of real genius."
John Owen once went to hear John Bunyan preach. Charles II, hearing of it, asked the doctor why someone as thoroughly educated as he would want to hear a mere tinker preach. Owen replied, "May it please your Majesty, if I could possess the tinker's abilities to grip men's hearts, I would gladly give in exchange all my learning."

 | | | | THE GREAT INVITATION: Examining the Use of the Altar Call in Evangelism Erroll Hulse
"The notion that sinners can secure their own salvation by a 'decision' is fraught with all kinds of theological mischief. It has reduced faith to bare intellectual assent, populated the church with people who have never even been convicted about their sin, and made public invitations into the same kind of sacramental indulgences the original Protestants repudiated. Erroll Hulse has given us a thorough biblical answer to this error and I'm glad to see it back in print." - Pastor John MacArthur
"Erroll Hulse's classic work is a biblical and balanced answer to modern decisionalism. Hulse shows from Scripture that there is a legitimate place for the ambassador of Christ to exhort sinners to be reconciled to God, to reason passionately with them from Scripture, to invite them to drink freely of the water of life, and to plead with them and beseech them to turn to the Savior. But he also stresses that regeneration is the work of the Holy Spirit to produce faith in the sinner, not a result of the sinner's independent 'decision.' The two ideas are perfectly harmonious, because our passionate preaching is the means by which God sovereignly and effectually calls the elect to himself." --Phil Johnson, Executive Director of 'Grace to You'
"Authored with a kind and gracious tone, this work nevertheless attempts to tackle the insidious 'easy-believism' of our day, and it is my opinion that he does so very effectively." --Lance Quinn

click for details | | MARY BUNYAN: A Tale of Religious Persecution and Heroic Faith Sallie Rochester Ford with New Introduction by Dennis Gundersen
This is the deeply moving story of the home life of the Bunyan family, as John, the father, languished in prison as a result of his preaching as a Baptist pastor in England during the 17th century. The account is historical fiction, told largely from the vantage point of his blind daughter, Mary, his first-born child and constant joy.
Mary became Bunyan's loyal, constant companion on every occasion when the authorities would permit her to visit her father at the prison, and his persistent petitioner for mercy and release before King Charles. This stirring account of how a young girl's faith in God grew, rather than diminished, during times of persecution, is an inspiring example of peculiar beauty for all believers today.

 REFORMATION HEROES
The Reformation did not happen instantaneously; it was something God patiently arranged over a number of years. As you read this book, you will learn how the Lord used some people to plant the seeds of church reform long before October 31, 1517, when Martin Luther published his ninety-five theses. Luther's story is well-known; we trust you will find it interesting and instructive to read about him and about forty others (John Knox, Peter Martyr Vermigli, Zacharias Ursinus, Willem Teellinck, etc.) who contributed to the Reformation - some well known and others not so - most of whom are Reformation heroes. To provide a more full picture of the many sided Reformation, chapters are also included on the Anabaptist and Counter Reformation movements. The book concludes with a brief summary of the influence of the Reformation in different areas of life.
"I hope this book will help awaken youth in America to the vital truths set forth so clearly and boldly by the historic heroes of the Reformation." - Dr. R.C. Sproul
"The authors are to be warmly commended for giving our young people fresh access to the riches of the Reformation, namely, God's saints who did such great exploits for the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ." - Dr. Michael Haykin
"Although my wife and I read this with our 3 children (14, 12, 8) we found it to be aptly written at a level and in a fashion that was not condescending nor lofty, and interesting for us and other adults who may be around as well. The authors "pull no punches"; and while some details are grisly, they communicate it with tact, consideration and respect.
We are all sheep for the slaughter and are poured out as drink offerings...It is good to remember those who trod before, their example and the depth of their love for our Savior; that we may be bold and ready ourselves, to go and to do as He leads." - a satisfied customer
PURITAN HEROES (brand new title in December 2018)
Who were the Puritans, and why are they important? What can we learn from them today? The Puritan movement began in England during the sixteenth century and continued all the way into the early eighteenth century. Although the Church of England was formed as a result of the Reformation, the Puritans believed it needed much more reform. Puritan Heroes is a beautifully illustrated book that gives the reader an idea of what the Puritan movement was about and offers a glimpse into the lives of more than twenty of its most well-known leaders (among them William Perkins, Richard Sibbes, Thomas Goodwin, Anne Bradstreet, and Jonathan Edwards). The book concludes with ten important lessons readers can learn from the Puritans and study questions to help them retain these fascinating stories and assist them in applying the lessons to their lives. It also features a bibliography to encourage further study in greater depth, as well as a glossary and timeline to help readers understand historical context. Written for children and young people, it will prove a suitable introduction to the Puritans for adults as well.

click for details | | SEASONS OF THE HEART: A Year of Devotions from One Generation of Women to Another Compiled by Donna Kelderman
 Publisher's Description:
A queen, an educator, a missionary, a pastor's wife. Some of them single, some married, some widowed, some mothers. All of them, like women today, knew the joys and heartaches of life. But the bond that drew this generation of women together (and connects them to women today) was their heart for God and devotion to Christ. In this year's worth of devotions, you will find spiritual insights from godly women of the past who, like us, struggled with sin, loneliness, and disappointments yet rejoiced in God's love, mercy, grace, and providential blessings. Join them in the various seasons of their hearts and find timeless encouragement and wisdom from one generation of women to another.
Authors include Ruth Bryan, Anne Dutton, Isabella Graham, Elizabeth Julia Hasell, Frances Ridley Havergal, Sarah Hawkes, Susan Huntington, Harriet Newell, Katherine Parr, Susannah Spurgeon, Anne Steele, and Mary Winslow.
+ 366 days of Scripture verses and brief devotional meditations that provide timeless truths, encouragement, and wisdom for your daily walk with God
+ Updated language makes meditations accessible to modern readers
+ Brief, inspiring biographies of each of the contributing authors
+ Excellent gift for Christmas, graduation, Mother's Day, and birthdays for women of all ages
"Hundreds of years separate us from the women whose writings are featured in this devotional. Yet those who share their love for Christ will find them to be kindred spirits. Drawing from the Scriptures to face their own struggles and trials, they speak with timeless truth to believers of every generation. A treasure trove!" - Nancy Leigh DeMoss, author and Revive Our Hearts teacher and host
"Perhaps some of the most challenging yet tender words ever penned come to us from the writings of godly women of the past. Selected by Donna Kelderman as daily readings, here is a collection of such writings. And who can tell what blessings may be in store for us with a year spent in the company of women like Ruth Bryan, Mary Winslow, Susannah Spurgeon, Frances Ridley Havergal, and many others?- Faith Cook, author of Fearless Pilgrim: The Life and Times of John Bunyan, Lady Jane Grey: The Nine-Day Queen of England, and several other titles

A select variety of archaisms has been retained, with modern equivalent terms in brackets, since these have gained a particular quaintness and timeless quality. Chapter divisions also contribute toward ease of comprehension along with numerous classic character illustrations.

 | | | | PREACHING WITH BIBLICAL PASSION: A Scriptural and Historical Study Gabriel Grossi
"Mr. Grossi's book is a timely call to return to biblical, Spirit-anointed preaching, akin to what the Puritans called 'plain preaching.' Such preaching does justice to the glory of God, the centrality of Christ, and the saving ministry of the Holy Spirit, the depravity of man, and the invitations of the Gospel! Tolle Lege! (Take up and Read!)" - Dr. Joel Beeke

Follow the adventures of Bo, a real-life, three-legged dog who lost his right leg in a terrible accident, but who persevered and won the heart of his new owner and the author of the book. Although this is written for young children, parents and teachers will find this story tugging at their hearts, as they see the value and integrity of all creatures of our God and King.
In this second BO BOOK Bo meets a real-life hero from the Iraq War, Noah Galloway who lost an arm and leg while serving his country. Noah has persevered to become a national hero to thousands who have heard him speak about overcoming disabilities. One purpose of the book is to share how one can overcome trials that are sent as a test from the Lord.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Noah Galloway has recently been featured on the TV show DANCING WITH THE STARS and has been overwhelming people with his story of courage. Please pray for Noah as doors continue to fly open all over the country, and as he begins to speak about this book. Pray for him as he will be facing new challenges even more dangerous than what he faced in Iraq.
A PRAYER FOR ALL IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY
O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honor and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
