NOW AVAILABLE TO SHIP

Published over 120 years ago in this volume by the Bishop of Liverpool in England he opened his heart to the future of his country.

"RYLE IS MAGNIFICENT! There's no other word for it, - are you brave enough to face hard-hitting truth and have God search your heart on things that matter most? Then Ryle is the man for you! Do yourself a favor - read this and think about what you read." - J.I. Packer

"I heartily endorse it, and strongly commend it to both Christian leaders and fathers, not to mention older and younger men alike." - John MacArthur, Jr.

"Thoughts for Young Men is pure spiritual gold." - Jerry Bridges

"Thoughts for Young Men abounds in reliable counsel and says - with a rare combination of seriousness and graciousness - the very things we need to hear. Young men, for whom it was written, will find it invaluable; but all Christians, men or women, young or old, can read it with lasting benefit. It deserves to be widely read and circulated, and will do spiritual good to every reader." - Sinclair Ferguson

"THOUGHTS FOR YOUNG MEN is wise, frank, warm-hearted and hard-hitting. I hope that many, many young men will study it, and that parents and teachers will also read it in order to clarify their vision of what Christian young men should be. Although written over a century ago, the message is right up-to-date." - John R.W. Stott

"Out of Ryle's dealings with many young people came one of the most important and relevant things he ever wrote, his Thoughts for Young Men. The reading of this material could well be a turning point in the lives of many today across the world." - Iain Murray

"I am happy to commend the re-publication of Thoughts for Young Men." - Leon Morris

"Dear young friends, if you value your souls you will read Ryle's 'Thoughts for Young Men.' He did not know it but he was writing more for you than for his own youth." - John Gerstner

"Thoughts is sound, profitable reading. I commend it to young men everywhere." - James Montgomery Boice

"I am very thankful for your bringing into print once again Ryle's excellent book 'Thoughts for Young Men.' May it have a wide audience of those with ears to hear." - Elisabeth Elliot

THE CHILD'S BOOK ON THE FALL
Thomas H. Gallaudet

Thomas H. Gallaudet (1787-1851) was the Apostle to the Deaf in the United States. He devoted his life to teach the underprivileged the truths of God's Word. He wrote dozens and dozens of books using simple, straightforward language for children, young people and adults.

"No other part of the Bible can be properly understood if Genesis 1-3 is misunderstood. The fall of our first parents into sin was both tragic and cataclysmic. The need and nature of the salvation that God provided in Jesus Christ cannot be appreciated where the events in the garden of Eden are underestimated. Children, as well as adults, need to learn this. Thomas Galluadet's book explains humanity's fall into sin in simple, clear language. It is designed for children but will help anyone think more carefully about what really happened when Adam and Eve turned away from God and plunged the human race into sin. I highly recommend it." -Tom Ascol

THE FALL OF MAN is a plain explanation of the origin of sin in the universe. Gallaudet leads children by the hand into the garden of Eden to help them see how our first parents fell into rebellion against their great and gracious Creator. The book concludes with a passionate appeal to the reader to "Go to Christ" who alone can save.

This book can be read to and by children 6-12 years old.

REPENTANCE & FAITH: Explained and Illustrated for the Young
Charles Walker

Charles Walker was a brilliant and gifted man who was burdened to see the young taught the truth of God in their own language. In his own words: "The writer of the following little work has attempted to discuss important doctrines of the Gospel, and to urge its correspondent duty on the conscience of the reader. And he has attempted to do this in the language which children may understand, and in a form which may excite their attention."

This volume was originally published as two separate volumes on the gospel duties of Repentance and Faith. Examples are drawn from both Bible and Church history to demonstrate the difference between true and false faith, and true and false repentance. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!

This was originally published by The American Tract Society and went through many editions. C50 CBRT

The Child's Book on Repentance
Thomas H. Gallaudet

Thomas H. Gallaudet (1787-1851) was the Apostle to the Deaf in the United States. He devoted his life to teach the underprivileged the truths of God's Word. He wrote dozens and dozens of books using simple, straightforward language for children, young people and adults.

Along with the book "The Child's Book on the Soul" of all the books written by T.H. Gallaudet none had a more profound impact than this one.

According to Gallaudet's biographer, "This book exerted an influence in its day that would be hard to estimate. Thousands of copies were circulated. It was translated into many languages, besides being reprinted and largely sold in England. It was read as an English reading book in the schools of the Foreign Missionary Societies, and through these channels made its way into unexpected places, even reaching the eyes and heart of the King of Siam."

A MANUAL FOR THE YOUNG: An Exposition of Proverbs 1-9
Charles Bridges

A Manual for the Young is a book that combines two works by Charles Bridges suited for and directed to those in the prime of life. The first, and larger part of this work, is Bridges justly famous Exposition of Proverbs 1-9, which is extracted from his complete Commentary on the Book of Proverbs. In his own words, in 1859 he published the first nine chapters of his exposition with the title A Manual for the Young, "in accordance with suggestions repeatedly made to me." The second, and briefer part, is called An Address to Young Persons After Confirmation, which was used for many years in both the US and the UK as a gift for those just entering the Christian life. It is a fitting conclusion to his exposition of Proverbs, and is here reprinted for the first time in more than a century.

Spurgeon said of Bridges work on Proverbs, "THE BEST WORK ON PROVERBS. The Scriptural method of exposition so well carried out by Bridges renders all his writings very suggestive to ministers. While explaining the passage in hand, he sets other portions of the Word in new light.

HEROES OF THE EARLY CHURCH: Life-Changing Lessons for the Young
Richard Newton

"These graphic sketches of the 'Heroes of the Early Church' are the latest series penned by the distinguished author, whom Spurgeon fittingly called 'The Prince of Children's Preachers.' The sketches are in many respects the best work of the gifted man. As he ripened in saintship for heaven, his literary style became even more rich with the aroma of the gospel, and so more forcible, simple, and crisp, than in his earlier writings." - Edwin W. Rice, from the Preface

These helpful sketches are filled with lessons for the young and old alike on the lives of men like: Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp of Smyrna, Justin Martyr, Tertullian of Carthage, Origin of Alexandria, Eusebius of Caesarea, Athanasius the Great, Basil the Great, Ambrose of Milan, John Chrysostom, Jerome, Augustine and others.

THE PROMISE: The Amazing Story of Our Long-Awaited Savior
Jason Helopoulos, Illustrated by Rommel Ruiz

Inviting Children to See Jesus from Creation to the Manger

In the beginning God created the whole world. After six days of work, he had created the stars in the sky, the mighty oceans, tall trees, beautiful flowers, mighty sea creatures, and the most prized of all creation—Adam and Eve. Created in God’s image, Adam and Eve were friends with him. But one day “the worst of all days came”—the serpent deceived them and they sinned against God. Adam and Eve’s relationship with God was broken.

But God gave mankind a promise.

And what a great promise it was!

The promise of salvation! He promised that one would come who would crush the head of the lying serpent, one who would deliver mankind from their sin, one who would restore man and woman’s relationship with God.

But who has the power to do that? Does Abraham, a great man of faith? Does Moses, a great prophet? What about Joshua, the great conqueror?

Jason Helopoulos invites you to join him on a journey through the pages of the Bible in search of the promised Savior, from the garden of Eden to a manger in Bethlehem. With captivating illustrations by Rommel Ruiz and easy-to-read language, children and parents alike are invited to come to know the promised one—Jesus Christ.

ENDORSEMENTS

“What a great way to help kids (and their parents!) grasp where the story of the Bible is headed from the very beginning. This engaging book artfully presents the superiority and perfections of Jesus even as it puts the ‘heroes’ of the Old Testament story in their appropriate place.” -Nancy Guthrie, author, Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament Bible study series

“The Promise by Jason Helopoulos is a stunning book with a powerful message for both children and adults. Each beautifully illustrated page takes young readers on a journey through the Old Testament, helping them understand how all the stories fit together into one grand and glorious story of redemption. This wonderful book helps children to see Jesus as the perfect prophet, priest, and king who fulfills all the promises of God.” -Melissa B. Kruger, Director of Women’s Initiatives, The Gospel Coalition

“The whole message of the Bible is contained in one promise in one verse: Genesis 3:15. Now here is that promise simply explained and stunningly illustrated for our children with drama and tension. This is a book I’ll definitely be reading to my kids over and over and over.” -Jonathan Gibson, Assistant Professor of Old Testament, Westminster Theological Seminary

“It is, from the very beginning right up to its glorious end, the greatest story ever told. The Promise weaves together the beautiful prose of Jason Helopoulos and the stunning illustrations of Rommel Ruiz to tell that story with fresh wonder and delight. So settle into a comfy chair, pull the children into your lap, and relish the rich history of this story. I hope you will love it as much as I do.” -George Grant, Pastor, Parish Presbyterian Church, Franklin, Tennessee

“At a time when many Christian books for children are all too ready to provide moralistic accounts, Jason Helopoulos introduces the simple story of sin and redemption with studied economy of words and skillful repetition. Coupled with Rommel Ruiz’s masterful illustrations, this book is sure to grab the children’s attention, fix it on Christ, and provide an invaluable key for a proper understanding of Scripture. Parents can use it as a springboard for family devotions and a reinforcement to Sunday’s sermons, and children will return to it again and again to let their minds wander through the treasures of the wisdom and knowledge of God.” -Simonetta Carr, author, Christian Biographies for Young Readers

“What a wonderful resource for children! Jason Helopoulos’s The Promise—complemented by Rommel Ruiz's riveting illustrations—teaches kids that Jesus is our perfect Savior.” -Deepak Reju, Pastor of Biblical Counseling and Family Ministry, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC; author, Great Kings of the Bible

RILLS FROM THE FOUNTAIN OF LIFE: Good Words from God's Word for the Young
Richard Newton

This was the very first book written by the man who went on to become known as "The Prince of Preachers to Children." Newton explains the origin of the book in the Preface: "The following sermons have been published at the request of the teachers of the Sunday-schools of St. Peter's Church in Philadelphia. For the last two years, there has been a service for the children of this congregation, on the afternoon of the first Sunday of the month. On these occasions, the children occupy the body of the church. The usual service is performed, and a sermon preached, designed especially for the benefit of the children. It is called, 'THE CHILDREN'S CHURCH.'"

For more than 30 years Newton conducted CHILDREN'S CHURCH each month in which he preached a full length sermon prepared for the young lambs of his flock. Thousands upon thousands heard these masterful addresses, and the Lord used these messages mightily and raised up an army of faithful servants who went into pastoral ministry, the mission field, and numerous other places where the name of Christ is honored. THESE MESSAGES ARE BOTH TIMELESS AND TIMELY.

The subjects include:

THE PLEASANT WAY: on Proverbs 3:7

THE SPIDER'S EXAMPLE: on Proverbs 30:28

THE MARKS OF A BEN-ONI: on Genesis 35:18

THE CROOKED THINGS STRAIGHTENED: on Ecclesiastes 1:15

THE GREAT MAN IN GOD'S SIGHT: on Luke 1:15

THE LILY'S LESSONS: on Matthew 6:28

THE GIFT FOR GOD: on Proverbs 23:26

THE WONDERFUL LAMP: on Psalm 119:105

THE CHILD'S FORTUNE TOLD: on Proverbs 20:11

THE MILLENNIAL MENAGERIE: on Isaiah 11:6

THE BEST MERCHANDISE: on Proverbs 3:14

THE LESSONS JESUS TEACHES: on Matthew 11:29

"Every page is adapted to rivet attention, both by freshness of its matter, and the simple, yet graphic character of the illustrative anecdotes. Christian mothers will find ample material here for a dozen pleasant Sunday afternoons with their children, and teachers a store of instructive and interesting matter." -from the original publisher's advertisement

BIBLE ANIMALS and Lessons Taught by Them for Children
Richard Newton

"We enter now on a new course of sermons for the young. The subject of these sermons will be Bible Natural History. We shall take up one after another of the different beasts and birds mentioned in the Bible, and, in their habits and characters, try to find illustrations of some of the truths taught us in the Bible, and of the duties that spring out of these truths." -from the Author

"Just the thing to put into the hands of the young folks. Dr. Newton is a prince among writers to the young." - The British Weekly

"For clearness, simplicity, and vigor of style, together with wealth of apt illustration, there are no books for the young that 'hold the field' with greater tenacity than those of Rev. Richard Newton. They are packed full of entertainment, always mingled with spiritual instruction of the best sort; and the inetrest is kept up by the breadth of the field from which the author gleans his anecdotes." - The Christian Leader

"Write on, good Dr. Newton, our children will never grow tired of your emblems and stories. Every teacher should read this book and then repeat it to his class. Anything for the young by Dr. Richard Newton should be within reach of every Sunday-school teacher and student." - The Sword and the Trowel

THE GIANTS AND HOW TO FIGHT THEM: Lessons for Children of All Ages
Richard Newton

"There are giants in the earth in these days; and God expects us all to engage in the work of trying to fight them. When I speak of giants now, I do not mean physical giants, but moral giants. I do not mean men with huge bodies, four or five times larger than common-sized men; but I mean great sins of different kinds, which may well be called giants. I want now to speak about five giants that we should all unite trying to fight against. One of these is a good way off from us; but the rest are very near us. Listen to me while I tell you who these giants are, and the way in which we must try to fight them."

I. The first giant I am to speak of is the GIANT HEATHENISM. This giant doesn't live here. He is found in countries where the Gospel is not known. His castles may be seen in Africa, and in India, in China, and in the islands of the sea. He is a huge giant. This giant is very strong, and very cruel. Well, what are we to do to this giant? Why, we must fight him, as David did Goliath. The Bible is the brook to which we must go. The truths which it contains are the stones that we must use.

II. The second giant I would speak of is the GIANT SELFISHNESS. The giant selfishness never sees, or hears, or does anything for anyone but himself if you find that you are getting to think more of yourself than of others, then be sure the giant is after you. We must fight this giant by self-denial.

III. The third giant I want to speak about is the GIANT COVETOUSNESS. This giant is very large in size, and very strong in limb; but he has the tiniest tittle bit of a heart you ever saw, might put it in a nutshell. The only wonder is how so huge a frame can be supported by so little a heart. But this is not all, for little as his heart is, it is hard as stone. He is ashamed of his name, and won't answer to it. He pretends that his right name is — frugality. But this is a great story. Frugality is a very different person. He is a good, true, honest fellow If you ask, How are you to fight him? I answer, by learning to give.

IV. The fourth giant of which I will speak is the GIANT ILL-TEMPER. But how are we to fight against, this giant? I answer, By trying to be like Jesus. We always think of Him as — the "gentle Jesus, meek and mild." Do you suppose that this giant ever got a single link of his chain on Jesus? No.

V. The last giant I wish to speak about is the GIANT INTEMPERANCE. He is a very ugly-looking fellow When he is in a good humor, and feels jolly, he puts on a silly face, and looks very foolish. But when he gets in a passion he is awful looking, and it makes one shudder to see him.

In addition to these Five Giants Dr. Newton also has Five addresses on the following:

THE GOOD SOLDIERS: on 2 Timothy 2:3

THE CONQUEROR'S JEWEL: on Exodus 28:19

THE WONDERFUL EYES: on Proverbs 15:3

ACKNOWLEDGING GOD: on Proverbs 3:6

THE CURE FOR CARE: on Genesis 22:14

THE SCRIPTURES: THE ONLY RULE OF FAITH: An Exposition of the Second Answer of the Shorter Catechism
John Hall with an Introduction by John Whitecross

Q. 2. What rule hath God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him?

A. The Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.

This uncovered treasure is intended for all who desire to teach or to learn the rule that God has given to direct us to fulfill the purpose for which we were created. John Hall (1806-1894) is best known for his long-term friendship with J.W. Alexander, that later resulted in his two volume work which included the 800 letters he received from Alexander over their 40 year relationship.

"The author, in illustrating the answer to the Second Question in the Shorter Catechism, has furnished a well digested treatise on the value of the Bible as the only true and infallible rule of faith. The excellence of this little volume will be appreciated by the intelligent reader. It gives a portable and effectual preventitive of the prime error of Popery." -from The Descriptive Catalogue of the Publication of the Presbyterian Board of Publication

This little gem is the complementary volume to our book entitled THE CHIEF END OF MAN: An Exposition of the First Answer of the Shorter Catechism, also written by Hall. Parents and children, teachers and pupils, pastors and congregation alike will benefit from this wonderful book.

We have chosen to add a brief Introduction by John Whitecross drawn from his book THE SHORTER CATECHISM ILLUSTRATED (also published by Solid Ground). A few examples are given below:

John Locke, a little before his death, being asked what was the shortest and surest way for a young gentleman to attain a true knowledge of the Christian religion, made this reply; 'Let him study the Holy Scriptures, especially the New Testament; therein are contained the words of eternal life. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter.'

It was customary, in Cromwell's time, for his soldiers to carry each a Bible in his pocket; among others, a profligate young man, who was ordered out to attack some fortress. During the engagement, a bullet had perforated his Bible, and gone so far as to rest opposite these words in Ecclesiastes; 'Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth, and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth; and walk in the ways of thy heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.' These words so appropriate to his case, powerfully affected his mind, and proved, by the blessing of God, the means of his conversion. He wed to observe that the Bible had been the happy means of saving both his soul and his body.

During days of war a godly man visited a camp of French soldiers at Toulon, taking with him a number of French New Testaments which he distributed to the men, many of whom seemed pleased with the gift. He had at length exhausted all his store, with the exception of one copy; this he offered to a man standing near him. The man took it, opened it, and turning to a companion said sneeringly, 'Oh, this will do to light my pipe with.' A discouraging enough reception; but the book, having been once given, was beyond recovery.

About a year and half after this occurrence, the distributor of the Testaments was on a short journey through the South of France, and stopped on his way at a roadside inn for refreshment and a night's lodging. On entering the house, he soon perceived that something of a sad nature had happened to the landlady. On inquiring what it was, she informed him that her eldest son had been buried that very week. She went on very naturally to dilate on his many excellencies, and spoke of his happy deathbed. 'And sir,' said she, 'all his happiness was got from a little book that was given him sometime ago.' The traveler inquired further concerning the little book. 'You shall see it,' said the mother, 'it is upstairs.' She soon returned with the book. On opening it, he found it to be French New Testament, and identified it as the very one he had himself given, so many months before, to that seemingly unpromising soldier at Toulon. He discovered that five or six of the early pages had been torn out, thus indicating that the man had actually commenced the fulfillment of his threat to use the book to light his pipe with. This was not all. On the inside cover were written the words: 'Given to me at Toulon on —day; first despised, then read, and finally blessed to the saving of my soul.'

THE ABC FOUR-PACK- Bible History, The Biggest Story, & The Reformation
KEVIN DeYOUNG & STEPHEN NICHOLS

WE ARE JOING TOGETHER THREE OUTSTANDING BOOKS THAT WILL BE USEFUL IN TEACHING CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS 1 TO 3 YEARS OLD ABOUT THE STORY OF THE BIBLE, AS WELL AS CHURCH HISTORY AND THE REFORMATION.

(1) BIBLE HISTORY ABCs: God's Story from A to Z by Stephen J. Nichols

For kids to understand the Bible, they need to see it as one story—God’s story of keeping his promises throughout history. This book for kids ages 3–6 follows the timeline of the Bible from A to Z—beginning with Adam, the first man God created, and ending with Zion, the new creation city.

Each letter briefly introduces an important concept from the story of the Bible, and is accompanied by corresponding Scripture passages, whimsical illustrations, and images of classical fine art from church history—all to help children see how their lives are part of the bigger story God is telling through the Bible.

(2) THE BIGGEST STORY ABC by Kevin DeYoung

From Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden to Zion and the new creation world, the Bible is telling one big story—the story of God's promise to deliver his people. Kevin DeYoung, best-selling author of The Biggest Story, has written a new board book to help kids ages 1 to 3 to make connections from Genesis to Revelation and from A to Z. Each page introduces a new letter of the alphabet with engaging and whimsical illustrations from award-winning artist Don Clark, retelling the biblical narrative in one continuous story. This board book is a fun way for parents to introduce their small children to the big story of the Bible.

(3) THE BIGGEST STORY: How the Snake Crusher Brings Us Back to the Garden by Kevin DeYoung

Once upon a time there lived a man and a woman. They were the happiest people on the planet.

True, they were the only people on the planet, but they were still terrifically happy.

Unfortunately, things didn’t stay happy and wonderful for long . . .

The Bible is full of exciting stories that fill children with awe and wonder. But kids need to know how all those classic stories connect to Scripture’s overarching message about God’s glorious plan to redeem his rebellious people.

In The Biggest Story, Kevin DeYoung—a best-selling author and father of six—leads kids and parents alike on an exciting journey through the Bible, connecting the dots from the garden of Eden to Christ's death on the cross to the new heaven and new earth.

With powerful illustrations by award-winning artist Don Clark, this imaginative retelling of the Bible’s core message—how the Snake Crusher brings us back to the garden—will draw children into the biblical story, teaching them that God's promises are even bigger and better than we think.

(4) REFORMATION ABCs: The People, Places, and Things of the Reformation—from A to Z by Stephen Nichols

Reformation ABCs is a fun way for kids to learn about the places, things, events, people, books, and ideas that shaped this pivotal time in church history. Through whimsical illustrations and engaging storytelling, this book teaches kids that even though the Reformation occurred five hundred years ago, it isn't just about people and places in the past. The Reformers' fight to reclaim the gospel is still relevant today. bdt

I CAN PLAY TOO! Life-Changing Lessons from a Three-Legged Dog
Sharman Martin, with Photographs from Karim Shamsi-Basha

BRAND NEW TITLE - AVAILABLE TO SHIP.

Follow the adventures of Bo, a real-life, three-legged dog who lost his right leg in a terrible accident, but who persevered and won the heart of his new owner and the author of the book. Although this is written for young children, parents and teachers will find this story tugging at their hearts, as they see the value and integrity of all creatures of our God and King. You will learn how Bo persisted with his owner's other two dogs to finally convince them that "I Can Play Too." The primary purpose of this full color book is to teach children to treat all other children with respect no matter how different they may be. This is a powerful story!

The author wrote the following to explain how she plans to use the money she makes from the sale of her book: "Diversity...differences... and children. How do we teach our children to respect others and treat them equally, regardless of how they look? As an elementary school teacher for 24 years I see this as an important part of a child's social character. And with that concept in mind, I have written a picture book about a dog (my dog), who only has 3 legs. Throughout the story, Bo is shunned by the other dogs in the family because he looks different. As I teach Physical Education to Kindergarten through 3rd grade students daily, I know that the physically impaired children at my school just want to play with the other children. This book was written with those, and all special needs children who have some sort of impairment, in mind. I know that this book would be an asset in every elementary classroom and library. Any monies collected after the payment for the publishing of Bo's book will go toward getting Bo a front leg wheelchair, which will in turn take the stress off of his remaining front leg."

ENDORSEMENTS:

"Martin's 'I Can Play Too' is the PERFECT book that teaches so many different life lessons including acceptance, determination, and perseverance. As the guidance counselor in a school with over 750 children, I knew it was a book that all children could relate to the moment I read it for the first time. Bo, a sweet 3-legged lab, loved his two brothers so much, but they did not want to play with him because he was 'different' from them. It took them a little while to warm up to him. Once they did and let him play, they realized he could play too and was full of fun, regardless of his difference! All children can relate to Bo if they think about a time in their lives when they felt excluded or different in some way. Bo teaches us to celebrate these differences because being different is what makes us special. I would recommend this book to every teacher, counselor, and parent, as it is chock-full of wonderful life lessons at the turn of every page." - Dawn Norris, Guidance Counselor, Vestavia Hills Elementary West in Alabama

THE CHILD'S BOOK ON THE SOUL
Thomas H. Gallaudet

Thomas H. Gallaudet (1787-1851) was the Apostle to the Deaf in the United States. He devoted his life to teach the underprivileged the truths of God's Word. He wrote dozens and dozens of books using simple, straightforward language for children, young people and adults.

This is considered the most remarkable book written by this extraordinary man. The Publisher read this to his four year old grandson and he was captivated by it and learned much about his immortal soul.

Henry Barnard, the distinguished promoter of public education, said the following about the book "The Child's Book on the Soul," 'This book exhibits Mr. Gallaudet's remarkable tact in bringing the most abstract subject within the grasp of the feeblest and youngest mind.'

"These volumes exerted in their day an influence it would be difficult to estimate. Hundreds of thousands of copies were circulated - they were translated into many languages, besides being reprinted and largely sold in England. They were read as English reading books in the schools of the Foreign Missionary Societies, and through these channels made themselves felt in unexpected places, even to the palace of the King of Siam." - The Life of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, pp. 230-231.

LITTLE PILLOWS & MORNING BELLS: Two Classic Devotional Books for Children
Frances Havergal

"In 'Little Pillows' Frances' intent was to give children biblical truth to think about as they went to sleep. Each truth was to be like a little pillow---something comforting and supportive to rest upon during the night. She teaches through vivid word pictures that bring everyday images to a child's mind, thus linking the spiritual to the child's world. This is child evangelism as it should be: plain, simple, truthful, without manipulation or deceit."

- Carol Brandt

LITTLE PILLOWS is a precious little book filled with promises upon which young children can rest their heads as they go to bed each night. MORNING BELLS is the companion volume written to give these same children a passage to carry with them throughout the day.

A wonderful book to read to young children, and for them to read to each other as they grow older.

SCRIPTURE BIOGRAPHY FOR THE YOUNG: With Critical Illustrations and Practical Remarks, Volumes One - Five
Thomas H. Gallaudet

Thomas H. Gallaudet (1787-1851) was the Apostle to the Deaf in the United States. He devoted his life to teach the underprivileged the truths of God's Word. He wrote dozens and dozens of books using simple, straightforward language for children, young people and adults.

These volumes are intended to take children and young people by the hand to lead them through the fascinating stories of the leading characters in the Old Testamernt Scriptures. Every chapter concludes with pointed and practical application to the hearts of the readers. The author is convinced that "the facts of the Bible should form a considerable part of a child's religious reading, instead of that mass of fictitious narrative which, at present, so greatly abounds."

These are perfect for Family Devotions and would be appropriate to use with children from 5 years old to the late teens. We have read nothing like these volumes.

Old Paths for Little Feet
Carol Brandt

"Old Paths for Little Feet is a much needed work for our children. The poignant quotes from voices of the past coupled with Carol's insightful applications make a powerful combination. Christian mothers who are serious about imparting truth to their children on a daily basis will greatly value this practical work." - Mary K. Mohler, wife of Dr. Albert Mohler, Southern Seminary, Louisville, KY

"Carol Brandt provides a solid balance of theological teaching and helpful illustrations in leading our children in the Lord. Reminding us of the importance of sound biblical doctrine, she instructs parents on our unique responsibilities to teach and love our children, so that they know of their sin and of God's sovereignty, judgment, and abounding grace in Christ Jesus. I wholeheartedly recommend the book and its teaching!" -Michael H. Griffin, Elder, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC

"Many good reasons could be given for publishing this book. I believe the most important reason is that all Christian teaching, all Christian experience must have a sound doctrinal foundation. In my opinion, the doctrinal emphasis is the most important part of the book."-from the Preface by Ernie Reisinger

THE SCRIPTURE GUIDE: A Familiar Introduction to the Study of the Bible
James W. Alexander

"The great end of all religious teaching would be attained, if men could be brought to read the Bible aright. No books, therefore, are unimportant, which point to the Holy Scriptures. Such is the present attempt, which is expressly dedicated to the YOUNG. It is intended for excitement as well as instruction; not only to communicate information and explain difficulties, but to offer inducements for the study of the Bible." - from the author's Preface

"This fascinating book by a superb theologian and pastor provides a wealth of information about the Bible and serves as an able introductory guide to Bible study as well as an effective evangelistic tool. The directions given in the last chapters on how to read the Bible are themselves worth the price of the book." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke

James W. Alexander (1804-1859) was the oldest son of Archibald Alexander. In addition to being a brilliant lecturer and preacher in college, seminary and the local church, Alexander labored to write books that would speak to the hearts and minds of the simple. He wrote numerous volumes for The American Sunday School Union that were unusually popular with all ages and all classes of people. THIS MAY BE HIS BEST CONTRIBUTION TO THAT DISTINGUISHED MINISTRY.

Written in the form of a story, Alexander has two young boys spend the Christmas holiday with their elderly Uncle Austin, who has earned the nickname "The Bible Man." Follow these young fellows as they enjoy their vacation by learning life-changing lessons from the Holy Scriptures. The final three chapters set forth 30 Directions for Studying the Bible. These are worth the price of the book!

MY BROTHER'S KEEPER: Letters to a Younger Brother on the Virtues and Vices, Duties and Dangers of Youth
James W. Alexander

This is the second in our series of "American Sunday School Union Classic Reprints." It first appeared in 1838 written by J.W. Alexander (1804-1859). It is a timeless example of how an older brother should admonish and encourage a younger brother.

Topics covered in the letters include:

On Reading the Scriptures, Gratitude to Parents

Shortness of Life, Early Rising, Bodily Exercise

Habits of Diligence, Friendships & the Danger of Evil Companions

Truth and Falsehood, Evil Speaking, Secret Prayer

The Great Concern: the Salvation of your Soul

Although a brilliant pastor and professor, Alexander wrote each letter with his youngest brother in mind, and thus in simple, straightforward language. Superbly written!

"My Brother's Keeper is a most helpful book, containing practical, godly advice for older children and early teens on a great variety of subjects. Though a bit dated at times, most of Alexander's advice is packed with wisdom and will greatly assist those youth who desire to dedicate their lives to God. His advice on reading the Scriptures, showing gratitude to parents, and avoiding bad friendships is particularly clear and beneficial. Every young person should read this book and pray for strength to implement its wise counsel." - Joel Beeke

"These letters are wonderful! Not only are they overflowing with practical wisdom for young men but they also exemplify the kind of fraternal love that ought to characterize our Lord's disciples. This is a useful tool for men who want to encourage and help younger men become faithful followers of Christ." - Tom Ascol

THE CHILD AT HOME: Living to Please God and Your Parents
John S.C. Abbott

"This book is intended for the children of those families to which 'The Mother at Home' has gone. It is prepared with the hope that it may exert an influence upon the minds of the children, in exciting grattitude for their parents' love, and in forming characters which shall ensure future usefulness and happiness." - From the author's Preface

John Abbott (1805-1877) was the brother of Jacob Abbott and the author of numerous works especially for children and young people. He was educated at Bowdoin college and Andover theological seminary, graduating from the former in 1825. He was ordained to the ministry in the Congregational church in 1830, and was settled successively at Worcester, Roxbury, and Nantucket, Mass. His first published work, "The Mother at Home," appeared in 1833, and was followed later that year by "The Child at Home." In 1844 he relinquished the pastorate, and devoted himself exclusively to literature, but occasionally resumed his ministerial labors for brief periods, and in 1866-'8 acted as state supply in New Haven.

"In a moving, illustrative way, Abbott's The Child at Home powerfully cultivates within children's consciences the need to honor God and their parents by promoting the need for heartfelt obedience, religious truth, genuine piety, biblical character traits, a sense of responsibility, and a dread of deception. The dozens of stories included make this book understandable for even very young children, while simultaneously retaining the interest of teenagers. Buy this book for every one of your children; better yet, read it aloud to them and discuss its contents together as a family." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

THE CHIEF END OF MAN: An Exposition of the First Answer of the Shorter Catechism
John Hall with Introduction by B.B. Warfield

"Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him for ever." This uncovered treasure is intended for all who desire to teach or to learn the purpose for which we were created. John Hall (1806-1894) is best known for his long-term friendship with J.W. Alexander, that later resulted in his two volume work which included the 800 letters he received from Alexander over their 40 year relationship.

This little gem is full of instruction on the reason we are here and the way that we can live to the glory of God and the enjoyment of God. Parents and children, teachers and pupils, pastors and congregation alike will benefit from this wonderful book.

An Introductory article by Benjamin Warfield adds to the value of this work.

THE FOLLOWING ILLUSTRATIONS ARE DRAWN FROM 'THE SHORTER CATECHISM ILLUSTRATED' BY JOHN WHITECROSS (which is also published by Solid Ground)

Lady Glenorchy, in her diary, relates how she was seized with a fever which threatened her life, 'during the course of which,' she says, 'the first question of the Assembly's Catechism was brought to my mind—"What is the chief end of man?" as if some one had asked it. When I considered the answer to it—"To glorify God, and to enjoy Him for ever"—I was struck with shame and confusion. I found I had never sought to glorify God in my life, nor had I any idea of what was meant by enjoying Him for ever. Death and judgment were set before me; my past sins came to my remembrance; I saw no way to escape the punishment due unto them, nor had I the least glimmering hope of obtaining the pardon of them through the righteousness of another.' From this unhappy state she was shortly after delivered, by believing on the Lord Jesus as the only Savior of the guilty.

Such was James Hervey's strict piety, that he suffered no moment to go unimproved. When he was called down to tea, he used to bring his Hebrew Bible or Greek Testament with him; and would either speak upon one verse or upon several verses, as occasion offered. 'This,' says William Romaine, 'was generally an improving season. The glory of God is very seldom promoted at the tea-table; but it was at Mr Hervey's. Drinking tea with him, was like being at an ordinance; for it was sanctified by the Word of God, and prayer.'

An eminent minister, after having been silent in company for a considerable time, on being asked the reason, signified that the powers of his mind had been solemnly absorbed with the thought of eternal happiness. 'Oh, my friends,' said he, with an energy that surprised all present, 'consider what it is to be for ever with the Lord-for ever, for ever, for ever.'

A French officer, who was a prisoner upon his parole at Reading, met with a Bible, read it, and was so struck with its contents, that he was convinced of the folly of skeptical principles, and of the truth of Christianity, and so resolved to become a Protestant. When his gay associates rallied him for taking so serious a turn, he said in his vindication, 'I have done no more than my old school-fellow Bernadotte, who has become a Lutheran.' 'Yes, but he became so,' said his associates, 'to obtain a crown.' 'My motive,' said the Christian officer, 'is the same; we only differ as to the place. The object of Bernadotte is to obtain a crown in Sweden, mine is to obtain a crown in heaven.'

Mr Robinson, a member of the presbytery of New Brunswick, was the son of a wealthy Quaker in England. Being permitted to pay a visit to an aunt in London, from whom he had considerable expectations, and becoming very fond of the dissipation of the town, he incurred debt, which so involved him, that he determined to quit his native country, and seek his fortune in America. Soon after his arrival, he had recourse, for subsistence, to teaching in a school in New Jersey. After he had been for some time engaged in this business, without any practical sense of religion, he was riding at a late hour one evening, when the moon and stars shone with unusual brightness. while he was meditating on the beauty and grandeur of the scene, and was saying to himself 'how transcendentally glorious must be the Author of all this beauty and grandeur I' the thought struck him with the suddenness and force of lightning—'But what do I know of this God? Have I ever sought His favor, or made Him my friend?' This happy impression, which proved, by its permanency and effects, to have come from the best of all sources, never left him until he took refuge in Christ, as the hope and life of his soul.

Thomas Carlyle, in speaking against modern materialism in 1876, made this confession: "The older I grow, and I am now upon the brink of eternity, the more comes back to me the first sentence of the Catechism which I learned when a child, and the fuller and deeper its meaning becomes, ‘What is the chief end of man? To glorify God, and to enjoy Him for ever.'" And Dr. Binnie says: "Of the numerous excellencies that have endeared the Westminster Shorter Catechism to so many churches on both sides of the Atlantic, I am disposed to reckon this among the greatest, that it opens with such a solemn announcement of the nobility of human nature. I know no other Catechism that opens so grandly."

JESUS THE WAY: The Child's Guide to Heaven
Edward Payson Hammond

Edward Payson Hammond spent much of his life and ministry traveling the world to preach the Gospel, with a special emphasis upon children. His labors were honored by men like C.H. Spurgeon, Andrew Bonar, W.S. Plumer and multitudes of others. When he wrote letters to some of the leading ministers of the nineteenth century he asked their opinion about the vital subject addressed in this book: the conversion of children. Here are a couple responses he received:

"My conviction is that our converts from among children are among the very best we have. I should judge them to have been more numerously genuine than any other class, more constant, and in the long run more solid." - Charles H. Spurgeon

"In awakenings that have been given us, the cases of young people have been as entirely satisfactory as any cases we have had. If conversion be God's work, in which the Holy Spirit reveals Christ to the soul, surely His work can take place in children as really as in the old." - Andrew Bonar

In his book "The Children of Church Members" Richard Fuller wrote the following:

" It has appeared by the best evidence the nature of the subject admits, that divine grace has frequently produced the conversion of children when they were very young; and when they are thus brought up under the religious care of both their parents and the church, it may be rationally expected the blessing will be frequently afforded."

This volume will immediately capture the attention of the youngest children as Hammond relates his experience of first entering his journey to the city of Jerusalem. Each of the first four chapters is a moving appeal to children to turn from sin to trust the Savior of sinners. The final chapter is addressed to those who have come to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

A powerful book to present the gospel to children 6-12 years old.

FEED MY LAMBS: Lectures to Children on Matters of Life and Death
John Todd

"This little work, after having passed through fifteen editions in this country (USA), and we know not how many in England, after having been translated into French, German, Greek, and many more languages, printed in raised letters for the blind, and last of all, having been adopted as a school-book for the liberated slaves at Sierra Leone, is now sent forth by the publishers in a new dress, with the addition of two new Lectures." - Author's Preface

John Todd (1800-1873) was a graduate of Yale College and Andover Theological Seminary. His theology was molded by the writings of Jonathan Edwards, and he had the privilege of pastoring Edwards Memorial Church in Northampton, MA.

William G. Blaikie said, "In preaching to the young, Dr. Todd has attained the first rank in this department of work. The American mind has such a proclivity to sharp, terse forms of expression, clever analogies and illustrations, keen analysis of feelings, vivid description and warm coloring, that we do not wonder that it should excel in addresses to which such qualities contribute so largely."

These lectures are the fruit of a ministry directed with conviction to the consciences of the young. From the opening page of these lectures the reader is addressed in such a personal way that he cannot but hear the words for himself.

Not only should these be read by and to children, but every pastor and Sunday School teacher should read it and learn the delicate art of speaking to children. This was a best seller in the middle of the 19th century, but it has been buried for more than 125 years. It is high time Todd was able to speak again for the cause of God and truth.

EARLY PIETY ILLUSTRATED
Memoir of Nathan W. Dickerman, the Little Sufferer, Whose Testimony Touched Hearts the World Over
Gorham Abbott

This volume contains the incrdible story of the conversion and death bed of a young boy who died nearly three months prior to his 8th birthday. Nathan Dickerman (1822-1830) was not raised in a godly home but one day a Sabbath School Teacher invited him to come to his class. This was the beginning of Nathan's dramatic conversion.

Dying of consumption, Nathan demonstrated such unusual depths of humility and love for Christ that there was a steady stream of pastors and Sabbath School Teachers who would sit by his bed and minister to him. More often than not they would leave the greater blessed.

Gorham Abbott, brother of John & Jacob, was assigned the priviliged task of keeping a journal of the last months of Nathan's life. This he did with great tenderness and care.

This is a book for every parent, pastor, teacher and child. It sets forth a heart-warming example of how Jesus Christ tenderly cares for his little lambs. It will be a strong rebuke to those who question whether or not children can experience genuine conversion.

HEROES OF THE REFORMATION: Life-Changing Lessons for the Young
Richard Newton

William G. Blaikie wrote the following words about the author of this book on Heroes of the Reformation, "In preaching to the young, Dr. Newton has attained the first rank in this department of work. The American mind has such a proclivity to sharp, terse forms of expression, clever analogies and illustrations, keen analysis of feelings, vivid description and warm coloring, that we do not wonder tghat it should excel in addresses to which such qualities contribute so largely."

C.H. Spurgeon said of this volume: "The records of the Reformation translated into fascinating language for young people, by one who knows how to enthrall youthful ears and hearts. A book which should be read by every boy and girl throughout the empire."

This volume includes brief but very informative sketches on the likes of Wycliffe, Huss, Savonarola, Luther, Melancthon, Tyndale, Edward the Sixth, John Fox, Latimer and Ridley, Cranmer, Knox, Zwingli, Calvin, Farel, Alasco, Gustaus Adolphus and several others.

In the words of the author, "There is nothing more helpful to us, in seeking to serve God, than to try and learn the practical lessons which we find illustrated in the lives of the good and holy men, who have been a blessing to the church and to the world through their faithful labors. The 'Heroes of the Reformation' belong to this class, and these sketches of their noble lives are sent forth in the earnest hope that through God's blessing they may prove useful to the young who are trying to serve him."

YOUNG PEOPLE'S PROBLEMS: Help and Hope for Today's Teenagers
J.R. Miller

"The most important of all lessons are those which teach us how to live. There come points and experiences in every young person's life when a word may give help, save from mistake, and make the way plain and clear. It is in the hope of throwing light on some of the questions which are sure to arise in young people's lives, that these chapters have been written. It is not claimed that all the 'problems' are here considered; but perhaps those eager to make life beautiful and rich will find a little help in some of these pages." -from the Author's Preface

Miller writes with a genuine love for the young as he addresses such pertinent topics as:

WHAT AM I HERE FOR?

ABOUT YOUR MOTHER

ABOUT YOUR FATHER

ABOUT YOUR FRIENDS

GETTING ALONG WITH PEOPLE

A HIGH SENSE OF HONOR

LEARNING CONTENTMENT

and 20 more brief but powerful chapters

"If any 19th century American Christian writer warrants reprinting, it is J.R. Miller! His writing style is delightfully smooth, his insights are spiritual diamonds on every page, and his pastoral applications are delivered with the skill of a well-seasoned physician of souls." - Pastor Bill Shishko, Franklin Square, NY

LECTURES ON THE BIBLE TO THE YOUNG for Their Instruction and Excitement
John Eadie

In March 1848 John Eadie (1810-1876) sent forth this volume with the desire to instruct and excite young people concerning the value of the Bible. The response was so encouraging that four years later he issued a revised and enlarged edition, which is here offered to the public for the first time in more than a century.

"Though written for the rising generation, these plain addresses are not meant for mere children. Simplicity has, indeed, been aimed at in their style and arrangement, in order to adapt them to a class of young readers whose minds have already enjoyed some previous training and discipline. They are designed to stimulate thought, as well as impart information. The object of their publication is not only to promote present improvement, but also to foster in the youthful spirit a hallowed taste for further study in the best of all the sciences." - From the Author's Preface

After a brief Introduction Eadie sets before his readers the following six heads:

READ THE BIBLE

UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE

BELIEVE THE BIBLE

REMEMBER THE BIBLE

PRACTICE THE BIBLE

CIRCULATE THE BIBLE

BIBLE PROMISES: Sermons for Children on God's Word as our Solid Rock
RICHARD NEWTON

In the prequel to BIBLE WARNINGS Richard Newton has eleven powerful sermons addressed to the minds and hearts of children on the "exceeding great and precious promises" of God. In his own words, "I have written these sermons about these promises, in the hope that my young friends, who read them, or hear them read, may be helped and encouraged in their efforts to love and serve the blessed Savior. My heart's desire and prayer to God is that His blessing may rest upon this book, and make it useful to the lambs of his flock."

C.H. Spurgeon said of this book, "Write on, good Dr. Newton, our children will never grow tired of your emblems and stories. Every teacher should read this book and then repeat it to his class."

TRUTH MADE SIMPLE: The Attributes of God Explained for Children
John Todd

In this remarkable book JOHN TODD (1800-1873) begins what he hoped to be a Systematic Theology for Children. He begins with Theology Proper, the Doctrine of God, and he covers the following:

IS THERE ANY GOD?

GOD IS A SPIRIT

GOD ETERNAL

GOD IS EVERY WHERE

GOD ALL-WISE

GOD KNOWS EVERY THING

GOD'S POWER

TRUTH OF GOD

GOD DOES AS HE PLEASES

GOD IS HOLY

GOD IS GOOD

"Truth Made Simple is a friendly but potent deviation from the fluff that permeates the childrens' book market today. Mr. Todd came up in a generation that had more confidence in childrens' ability to assimilate deep spiritual truth. He provides a welcome addition to the library of any parent who is seriously discipling his child in the Scripture. The Address to Mothers alone is worth the price of the book! Its focus on eternity will encourage us to approach our daily discipling of our children with reverence and zeal." - Selah Helms, author or "Small Talks on Big Questions"

Richard Newton, who was called by Spurgeon "The Prince of Preachers to Children", said the following about John Todd: "When I was a young man I happened to read a volume of "Lectures for Children" which had been written and published by Dr. John Todd. I felt then as if I had found a gold mine. That volume lasted me all through college, and taught me how to talk to children."

THE YOUTH'S BOOK ON NATURAL THEOLOGY
Thomas H. Gallaudet

Thomas H. Gallaudet (1787-1851) was the Apostle to the Deaf in the United States. He devoted his life to teach the underprivileged the truths of God's Word. He wrote dozens and dozens of books using simple, straightforward language for children, young people and adults.

"Natural Theology is not learned from the Bible. It is all that can be known about God, merely by examining the beings and things which he has made, without the aid of revealed Theology."

This book is written as a sequel to the Child's Book on the Soul and uses the same form of dialogues between Mrs. Stanhope and her son Robert, who is a few years older in this book than in the former.

ADVICE TO A YOUNG CHRISTIAN
On the Importance of Aiming at an Elevated Standard of Piety
Jared B. Waterbury with Introductory Essay by Archibald Alexander

This was originally released in 1827 by an anonymous author simply called A Village Pastor with an outstanding Introductory Essay by Archibald Alexander. It went on to be one of the best selling books by the American Tract Society. It was also published in the UK by the Religious Tract Society of London where it became very popular.

"Years ago, my wife 'found an old book' for me at a flea market. It was an 1843 printing of ADVICE TO A YOUNG CHRISTIAN On the Importance of Aiming at an Elevated Standard of Piety by a Village Pastor. (The title alone is instructive!) Since that day, I have loved this sweet little volume and have hoped someone would reprint it! It has often been useful to me as a devotional prod toward my own spiritual duties. I've read snippets in family worship and in prayer meetings, and I've shared portions with guests around the table on Lord's Day afternoons. Originally penned as private letters by a pastor to a young woman in his charge, these brief chapters are striking in the warm and winsome care that the writer shows for the eternal prosperity of his young reader. Fellow pastors will also be challenged by the extent of this man's effort toward the well being of a single young lamb, 'until Christ be formed' in her (Gal. 4:19). May these very pastoral encouragements once again achieve the author's 'ardent prayer' that they may comfort and edify many." - Pastor Murray Wilson, Trinity Reformed Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD

"To the lambs of Christ's flock, whom Peter was enjoined by the Good Shepherdf to feed, I dedicate this little book. The letters which compose it were written to instruct one of their number, the daughter of a highly valued friend. Since they are now made public, it is the ardent prayer of the author, that they may comfort and edify many more." - the Author

"The following letters are well calculated to turn the attention of the Christian public to the importance of diligence and punctuality in performing the duties of the closet. They were forwarded to me by an esteemed young clergyman, who is settled as a pastor in a distant and retired village. These letters are seasonable, judicious, and pious, and that as they are written in an animated style they will be extensively perused by the young." - Archilbald Alexander

PEBBLES FROM THE BROOK: Sermons to Children Fighting the Good Fight of Faith
Richard Newton

"We all have giants to fight. Every form of sin is such a giant. We can only succeed in this warfare by following David's example. The brook, to which we must go for our pebbles, is the word of God. Every portion of truth from this word is a pebble for our use in this warfare. When Jesus, the Captain of our salvation, went forth into the wilderness, to be tempted of Satan, he was fighting the great father of all the giants. He fought and conquered him with pebbles from this brook. And if we seek the help of God, to enable us to use these pebbles, as our blessed master did, we shall be successful as he was." - from the Author's Preface

The sermons in this volume are as follows:

THE BEST CAPTAIN - Hebrews 2:10

THE BEST OF ALL BLESSINGS - Proverbs 3:15

HOW THE BIRDS PRAISE GOD - Matthew 6:26

THE DAY-SPRING'S VISIT - Luke 1:78

THE CHILD'S PREACHER: A Series of Sermons on Systematic Theology for the Young
Alexander Fletcher, J.C. Ryle, John Crawshaw, Lyman A. Eddy, and Lowther J. Barrington with Introductory Lesson by C.H. Spurgeon

"THESE ARE SOLID AND EDIFYING, AND AT THE SAME TIME VIVACIOUS AND LIFE-LIKE ADDRESSES." -the Editor

Every family should have a copy of this marvelous volume of over 450 pages containing 33 sermons intended for the instruction of the heart and mind of children within the household and the church. Alexander Fletcher (1787-1860) was known as "the Children's Friend" and the man chosen to perform the marriage of Charles Haddon Spurgeon and Susannah Thompson. John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) was the gifted Bishop of Liverpool and author of numerous books, including his Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, intended to be used for Family Worship. Although not as well-known, Revs. Lowther Barrington, John Crawshaw, and Lyman A. Eddy were also men gifted and faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and especially concerned about the sound instruction of the little lambs of Christ's flock.

The Editor wrote the following in his Preface: "One important object of the present volume is to furnish practical hints, which may serve to encourage yonng ministers, and others who imagine it a difficult thing to preach to children, to make the attempt more frequently. It will be found that the variety of texts and subjects which may be adapted to children's capacities is almost endless.

The great requisites, in order to interest children, are plainness of speech and fertility of illustration. When these are employed, low and silly expressions are worse than useless, and trifling thoughts and foolish imaginations are a positive offense. It is perfectly practicable to adapt every essential, or strictly important religious topic, not only to the capacity, but even to the tastes of children; yea, to interest them deeply in such suhjects, and at the same time to preserve dignity of expression and purity of thought. How vastly important, therefore, is it for every minister to qualify himself for, and to habituate himself to, preaching the Gospel to children."

Rev. Lowther Barrington, preacher of the opening sermon of the book, was the author of a book by the same title. Of that book we are told, "These are a series of little sermons to children, delivered at a separate service instituted for them. They are, in our opinion, quite perfect in their way: we can hardly lay down the volume. Let all mothers by all means get this little tome, and read it to their children."

Introductory Lesson by C.H. Spurgeon: CHILDHOOD AND HOLY SCRIPTURE

Among the sermons are the following:

CREATION by Rev. L. Barrington

GOD'S WISDOM by Alexander Fletcher

GOD'S OMNIPRESENCE by Alexander Fletcher

GOD'S OMNISCIENCE by Alexander Fletcher

BIBLE JEWELS and Lessons Taught by Them for Children
Richard Newton

"Natural jewels are so valuable that many of us can never afford to buy them. Nor is this necessary, for we can be happy without them. But these BIBLE JEWELS are a thousand times more valuable, and without them we cannot be happy. Yet valuable as they are, the poorest person who reads this book, whether young or old, may become the owner of all the Bible jewels of which it speaks. And this is the reason why this book was written. The hope and prayer of the writer is that everyone who reads these pages may try to get all these precious Bible jewels." - from the Author's Preface

BIBLE MODELS: The Shining Lights of Scripture Applied to Children
Richard Newton

"Our dear Father in heaven has filled His blessed book - the Bible - with interesting histories of the lives and characters of great and good men who have been His servants and followers from the beginning of the world; so that we, who live in these later times, may learn of their thoughts and actions and be made better by them. The Apostle James shows us the use God intends we shall make of these histories, when he says: 'Take, my brethren, the prophets for an example.' This means we should study the lives of the holy men of whom we read in the Bible, until we get the model points of their character impressed upon our minds; and then by the grace of God we may be able to bring these virtues forth again in our own hearts and lives.

"The author of this book has endeavored to place before young readers, in a clear and forcible manner, the admirable traits of character possessed by some of the great men of the Bible. The advantages to be gained by following these BIBLE MODELS are plainly shown by many interesting stories drawn from actual life. It is hoped that not only young, but older persons also will find pleasure as well as profit in the pages of this volume; and that, perhaps, as they become familiar with the lofty examples held up to their gaze, their hearts will go out in earnest prayer that 'God may give them grace to follow His blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, so they may come to the unspeakable joys which he has prepared for those who unfeignedly love Him.'" - from the Author's Preface

LEAVES FROM THE TREE OF LIFE: Sermons for Children on the Truths about Jesus that Heal the Soul
Richard Newton

"This book has much to say about healing. And to souls diseased by sin, as ours are, this is a matter of the greatest importance. We see its importance when we remember that one of the sweet names by which our blessed Savior is spoken of in the Old Testament is JEHOVAH-ROPHI, or 'The Lord who healeth.' The chief means that He makes use of in healing souls is the truth about Jesus, of which the Bible tells us. 'He sent His word, and healed them,' says David. It is more than 20 years ago since the writer of this book first engaged in the work of preaching to children, and making books of sermons. He was first led to do this by thinking on the words of Jesus to Peter, 'Lovest Thou me? Feed my lambs.' This is the twelfth volume he has been permitted to publish. This new volume is now sent forth as an expression of the writer's cordial love to the lambs of Jesus everywhere." - from the Author's Preface

Subjects covered are as follows:

THE BIBLE COMPARED TO A TREE OF LIFE - Revelation 22:2

THE LESSON OF OBEDIENCE - Luke 2:51

THE LEAF FOR CURING LYING - Psalm 120:2

THE LEAF FOR CURING COVETOUSNESS - Proverbs 3:9,10

THE LESSON OF PATIENCE - James 1:4

THE LEAF FOR HEALING IDLENESS - Ecclesiastes 9:10

THE LEAF FOR CURING PRIDE - James 4:6

THE LEAF FOR HEALING THE EVIL CONSCIENCE - Hebrews 10:22

NUTS FOR BOYS TO CRACK: Earthly Stories with a Heavenly Meaning
John Todd

John Todd (1800-1873) was a master teacher. He published about thirty volumes, all of which were re-issued in England, and several of them have been translated into German, French, modern Greek, Dutch, Danish, Italian, Arabic, Armenian, Turkish, and Tamil. His "Lectures to Children" have been printed in raised letters for the blind, and used as a schoolbook in the colony of Sierra Leone. Of some of his books several hundred thousand copies have been sold, and several of his shorter pieces, notably "Hafed's Dream," were for many years favorites for school readers.

His books FEED MY LAMBS and TRUTH MADE SIMPLE are sermons for children which have become very popular once again after being out of print for more than 125 years.

This book is filled with stories that will cause boys and young people to think about the heavenly meaning found in earthly stories. This book, like all John Todd's works, will both entertain and inform. Todd loved children and he sought always to speak their language without being silly and childish. He always had eternity in view and desired that all who read his books would be brought into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

RICHARD NEWTON, himself the 'Prince of Preacher to the young' (according to CH Spurgeon), said that he learned how to teach children from reading one of the books of John Todd.

WILLIAM G. BLAIKIE, in his outstanding book called 'For the Work of the Ministry' said the following about John Todd, "In preaching to the young, some American ministers have been highly successful; such men as Dr. John Todd and Dr. Richard Newton have attained the first rank in this department of work."

REFORMATION HEROES & PURITAN HEROES
Joel Beeke & Diana Kleyn; and Joel Beeke & Glenda Mathes

REFORMATION HEROES

The Reformation did not happen instantaneously; it was something God patiently arranged over a number of years. As you read this book, you will learn how the Lord used some people to plant the seeds of church reform long before October 31, 1517, when Martin Luther published his ninety-five theses. Luther's story is well-known; we trust you will find it interesting and instructive to read about him and about forty others (John Knox, Peter Martyr Vermigli, Zacharias Ursinus, Willem Teellinck, etc.) who contributed to the Reformation - some well known and others not so - most of whom are Reformation heroes. To provide a more full picture of the many sided Reformation, chapters are also included on the Anabaptist and Counter Reformation movements. The book concludes with a brief summary of the influence of the Reformation in different areas of life.

"I hope this book will help awaken youth in America to the vital truths set forth so clearly and boldly by the historic heroes of the Reformation." - Dr. R.C. Sproul

"The authors are to be warmly commended for giving our young people fresh access to the riches of the Reformation, namely, God's saints who did such great exploits for the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ." - Dr. Michael Haykin

"Although my wife and I read this with our 3 children (14, 12, 8) we found it to be aptly written at a level and in a fashion that was not condescending nor lofty, and interesting for us and other adults who may be around as well. The authors "pull no punches"; and while some details are grisly, they communicate it with tact, consideration and respect.

We are all sheep for the slaughter and are poured out as drink offerings...It is good to remember those who trod before, their example and the depth of their love for our Savior; that we may be bold and ready ourselves, to go and to do as He leads." - a satisfied customer

PURITAN HEROES (brand new title in December 2018)

Who were the Puritans, and why are they important? What can we learn from them today? The Puritan movement began in England during the sixteenth century and continued all the way into the early eighteenth century. Although the Church of England was formed as a result of the Reformation, the Puritans believed it needed much more reform. Puritan Heroes is a beautifully illustrated book that gives the reader an idea of what the Puritan movement was about and offers a glimpse into the lives of more than twenty of its most well-known leaders (among them William Perkins, Richard Sibbes, Thomas Goodwin, Anne Bradstreet, and Jonathan Edwards). The book concludes with ten important lessons readers can learn from the Puritans and study questions to help them retain these fascinating stories and assist them in applying the lessons to their lives. It also features a bibliography to encourage further study in greater depth, as well as a glossary and timeline to help readers understand historical context. Written for children and young people, it will prove a suitable introduction to the Puritans for adults as well.

SCRIPTURE BIOGRAPHY FOR THE YOUNGThe History of Josiah, The Young King of Judah
Thomas H. Gallaudet

THIS IS A BONUS VOLUME TO THE SCRIPTURE BIOGRAPHY FOR THE YOUNG SERIES

THE AUTHOR'S PREFACE

"The author adds one more volume, for children and youth, to the list of Scripture biographies. He rejoices that others too have been engaged in similar labors. As a father, he longs for the time when the histories which God himself directed to be written for our instruction and that of our offspring, may be prepared for their perusal, interwoven with such elucidations and instructions, and made the basis of such exhortations and admonitions, as will attract their attention, with an increasing interest, to the divinely inspired record, and lead them to regard the facts of the Bible as the most important facts to be known and pondered in the whole circle of their reading.

He will only add, that his own attention has been arrested by the character of Josiah, as one that cornbines traits of peculiar excellence, which deserve to be strikingly illustrated and set before our children and youth, as models of imitation and incentives to duty.

How far he has succeeded in attempting to do this, the public will decide. If the book does good, especially to the souls of children and youth, his highest wishes will be answered."

Sharman Martin, with Photographs by Karim Shamsi-Basha

Follow the adventures of Bo, a real-life, three-legged dog who lost his right leg in a terrible accident, but who persevered and won the heart of his new owner and the author of the book. Although this is written for young children, parents and teachers will find this story tugging at their hearts, as they see the value and integrity of all creatures of our God and King.

In this second BO BOOK Bo meets a real-life hero from the Iraq War, Noah Galloway who lost an arm and leg while serving his country. Noah has persevered to become a national hero to thousands who have heard him speak about overcoming disabilities. One purpose of the book is to share how one can overcome trials that are sent as a test from the Lord.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Noah Galloway has recently been featured on the TV show DANCING WITH THE STARS and has been overwhelming people with his story of courage. Please pray for Noah as doors continue to fly open all over the country, and as he begins to speak about this book. Pray for him as he will be facing new challenges even more dangerous than what he faced in Iraq.

A PRAYER FOR ALL IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY

O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honor and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
