ROCK OF AGES
Augustus Toplady: The Little-Known Man Behind the Well-Known Hymn
Thomas Isham

Sadly, Augustus Toplady is not known as much as his most famous hymn 'Rock of Ages.' Thomas Isham seeks to redress that reality in his latest book. You will find out that the man who wrote this great hymn was a gifted and godly man who accomplished a great deal more than just writing a few worthy hymns that are still sung hundreds of years after his death. The man with the odd name was a true and noble champion for the Doctrines of Grace, and he did not shy away from entering the theological arena. He sought to follow the counsel of Jude who urged the people of the first century, "to contend earnestly for the faith once for all delivered to the saints." This book will bring back to life the little-known man behind the well-known hymn. Take it up and read it for your good.

"Thomas Isham has skillfully and sympathetically facilitated for his readers an enjoyable and highly informative encounter with one of the greatest figures in the annals of Evangelical Anglicanism. His candid portrait of Augustus Toplady enthralls, and at last does justice to a much maligned and misunderstood minister of the Lord Jesus Christ." - Rev. Roger Salter, Saint Matthews Anglican Church, Vestavia Hills, Alabama

The author begins his Preface with these words:

"For a period of years, the name of Augustus Montague Toplady hovered on the edges of this author's mind, a shadowy and indistinct presence even to one well versed in evangelical and Reformed literature. Toplady: Ah, yes, he was the fellow who wrote 'Rock of Ages,' wasn't he? And yes, he had that curious name - Toplady! Curious; rather humorous, too.

As time passed, the hovering shadow began to take on contours here and there; bits and pieces of the controversies between the Calvinist Toplady and the Arminian John Wesley entered into awareness, and, in time, encouraged further investigation. By-and-by, intimations of Toplady's theological and literary virtuosity became too pronounced to ignore further, and this writer embarked on reading anything and everything concerning the oddly named controversialist and hymn writer."

He then concludes his Preface with these inviting words:

"Again, this author asks, with amazement: What manner of man was this, that even two-hundred and thirty-five years after his death his words remain capable of convincing, inspiring, instructing, infuriating, intimidating, even scandalizing, those who happen upon them. What manner of man, indeed; what manner of clergyman, controversialist, scholar, churchman, preacher, hymn writer and sanctified sinner? To find out, read on. Taste and see that the man is good; a 'true Israelite without guile,' and - in this author's opinion - with enough theological and literary heft to impress the adversary, the uncommitted and the partisan alike."

THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD: The Proceedings of the First American Calvinistic Conference in June 1939
Edited by Jacob T. Hoogstra with John Murray, John Macleod, William Childs Robinson etc.

This Conference was held June 27-30, 1939 at a critical time in human history as the power of Adolf Hitler was beginning to be known and felt throughout the world. It was at this time that a number of ministers of the Gospel were compelled to hold a Conference with the following stated objective: THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS CONFERENCE IS TO RALLY POSITIVE CALVINISTS TO STATE, TO DEFEND, AND TO PROPAGATE HISTORIC CALVINISM IN THIS, OUR AGE.

"In an age when few evangelical Christians find comfort and hope in the sovereignty of a fatherly God, this book serves as a surefooted guide to help us navigate some of the depth and breadth of this glorious truth that lets God be God. The authors encourage us to remember that whatever we think, say, or do, we must begin with God, continue with God, and end in God. If you want to understand and treasure the profound truth that God does all that He does in all spheres of life because He is who He is, read this book." -- Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Thological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Mich.

This book contains all that transpired at that first historic Conference, and includes the following:

FOUNDATIONAL STUDIES

A Biblical Theological Study of the Sovereignty of God by Prof. John Murray

A Dogmatic Study of the Sovereignty of God by Dr. John Macleod

The Sovereignty of God and the Barthians by Prof. D.H. Kromminga

APPLICATORY STUDIES

The Sovereignty of God and Politics by Dr. Garrett Heyns

The Sovereignty of God and Philosophy by Dr. L. De Moor

The Sovereignty of God and Ethics by Rev. Wm. Matheson

PUBLIC ADDRESSES

The Sovereignty of God and American Attitudes by Dr. Wm Childs Robinson

God's Sovereign Choice of the Younger Son by Dr. John Macleod

The Sovereignty of God and Human Responsibility by Dr. Leonard Greenway

The Sovereignty of God and the Word of God by Dr. Gerhard C. Aalders

The Future of Calvinism in America by Dr. Charles Vincze

"We Calvinists have faith in the dynamic power of a consistent, uncompromising appeal to 'the law and the testimony,' to the infallinbility of the Word of God and its application to every sphere of life. Our purpose is to meet the challenge of the day and to study and to re-emphasize and to propagate our Calvinistic principles." - from John J. Hiemenga's Welcome Address

"When we ask the reason for the love that foreknowledge intimates and the greatness and security of which predestination expresses, we are uniquely confronted with the grandeur of the divine sovereignty. It is love that is according to the counsel of the divine will. The reason is enveloped in the mystery of His good pleasure. We are face to face with an ultimate of divine revelation and, therefore, an ultimate of human thought. This love is not something that we can rationalize or analyze. We are in its presence, as nowhere else, overwhelmed with a sense of the divine sovereignty. We are struck with amazement. It is amazing, inexplicable love. But to faith it is a reality that constrains the deepest and highest adoration. It is love, the praise of which eternity will not exhaust." -from John Murray's foundational address

"In this way our faith does not rest on any human 'wisdom' but on the power of God. And it is infinitely better to depend upon His mercy and power than upon any of our imagined good works, merit, or righteousness. It is the only way in which a foretaste of heaven is given. I believe in the future of Calvinism in America or anywhere else because it teaches of a God Who is really God." - from Charles Vincze's closing address

LIFE IN THE PSALMS: Reflections on the Greatest Devotional Book in the World
Peter Jeffery

"I wish someone had given me a book like LIFE IN THE PSLAMS when I was a young Christian in my twenties. With the simple clarity and straight-forward honesty that reminds me of the great J. C. Ryle, Peter Jeffrey's devotional introduction to many of the psalms is a tonic for the heart and a primer on how to get good out of the Scripture. Peter aims to help the new Christian of any age and he almost always succeeds. I plan to purchase a copy and make sure that I use it for my devotional reading in the psalms and as a pastor, I will use it in my sermon preparation to remind me how to make practical application. And I will keep copies on hand to give away to young Christians reading the psalms." - Pastor Steve Martin

Peter Jeffery has walked with God for more than 50 years, and he has found great personal help from the Book of Psalms. In recent years his failing health has caused him to spend much of his time in bed reflecting upon God's faithfulness to him all his days. These words come from a man who has seen God work in mighty ways throughout his life and who desires to share his joy with others as long as he has breath.

Peter opens his introduction with the following words:

"Christians love the psalms. These 150 gems are a delight to any believer because they are the joys and sorrows of God's people of the past that exactly mirror our present experiences. The psalmists were not theorising about God but recording their experiences for the enrichment of believers in all generations. The ups and downs of life are here and that is why Christians love them. We can identify with them and they may encourage or rebuke us but they never leave us empty.

The psalmists all demonstrate the reality of life with God. Sometimes this life is known in all its delights, but sometimes it is lost sight of and has to be sought again. Not that we ever lose it but we can lose the reality of it. There is nothing nominal or formal about the psalmist's religion. Everywhere it vibrates with life. It is this life in all its glorious hues that we look at in this book.

Life is not all plain sailing and spiritual life is no different. The essential mark of a Christian is that he has spiritual life. It is not natural to any of us and comes as a gift of God in regeneration. Spiritual life is to know and love God. It enables us to understand and respond to the word of God. Often it is a sheer delight but sometimes it is a battle. It can bring us into situations that are painful and would be avoided if we were not Christians, but as believers there is no avoiding some difficulties. Psalm 59 records such a situation. The problems were real but David is still able to end the psalm with confidence in God, 'O my strength. I will sing praise to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.'"

TWELVE WHAT ABOUTS: Answering Common Objections Concerning God's Sovereignty in Election
John Samson, Foreword by John Hendryx of Monergism.com

DR. R.C. SPROUL becomes our latest endorser of "Twelve What Abouts" - "It is a privilege to have received your book, 'Twelve What Abouts.' The title is great as are your 'what abouts,' and your responses. Thank you for your ministry in Christ's kingdom and for the clear and thoughtful work that has gone into your book."

John Samson went from being a convinced Arminian to a grace loving, Christ-honoring, Calvinist. He shares some of his journey and winsomely answers many of the questions he himself grappled with. 'Twelve What Abouts' by John Samson is the perfect book for those seeking truth about God's sovereign grace in salvation. Straightforward, easy to read, concise, and most of all Biblical, this is a unique book, providing answers for the twelve most common objections raised against the doctrine of Divine election. Pastor Samson's gracious spirit provides an excellent reading environment for those struggling with these great truths of Scripture.

"After finishing a sermon from Ephesians 1, I was immediately confronted by three hostile young visitors who asked the question, 'What about John 3:16?'; as if the Bible contradicted itself. This non-thinking, non-theological, feelings-oriented mindset is typical of today's postmodern generation. Pastor Samson has given us a warm and simple (without being simplistic) introduction to the Doctrines of Grace, so this type of ignorance can be biblically combated. This book is a very helpful tool to give to a young Christian or to someone newly encountering the truths of free and sovereign grace. Distribute it widely." - Earl M. Blackburn, Heritage Baptist Church, Shreveport, Louisiana

"Sometimes a single misapprehension or sticky question stands in the way of an honest believer's examination of the doctrines of grace. John Samson answers those questions with a pastoral heart, yet with biblical fidelity." - Dr. James White, Alpha & Omega Ministries

One man said, "This book helped me enormously. My understanding of God's grace has soared to new heights." Another said, "This is the one book I wish had been placed in my hands as a new Christian. There is a lifetime of insight here." Still another revealed, "There were times reading this when I just had to stop, fall to my knees and thank God for His measureless grace in my life." Whether you are brand new to the subject, or still wrestling with these weighty concepts, Twelve What Abouts will prove to be an indispensable resource in your search for the truth.

"I want to commend, to all readers seeking an honest look into these matters, this very fine treatment in which Pastor John Samson carefully answers the most common objections to the biblical doctrine of divine election. John is one of the most passionate Christians I know, whose number one purpose is to make Christ known. This work on the doctrine of election is no exception. In it you will find that the purpose of election is to bring all glory to Jesus Christ in our salvation." - John Hendryx, from the Foreword

"Whether you are new to the doctrines of grace or simply seeking greater clarity on the sovereign grace of God in salvation, this book will be beneficial. In 'Twelve What Abouts', John tackles common objections regarding the doctrine of election in a concise and biblical way. His charitable spirit coupled with his broad based biblical knowledge make for a joyful learning experience. As someone who teaches the doctrines of grace to the women at our church, I've turned to Samson's teachings multiple times. Do yourself a favor and add this little gem to your library -- it will be one of the best investments you've ever made!" - a satisfied reader from Amazon

THE DISTINCTIVENESS OF BAPTIST COVENANT THEOLOGY: Revised Edition A Comparison Between Seventeenth-Century Particular Baptist and Paedobaptist Federalism
Pascal Denault

NEW REVISED EDITION IS NOW AVAILABLE TO SHIP.

"This book by Pascal Denault is a welcome addition to the literature on an issue that has vexed many for too long. It is clear that the seventeenth-century Particular Baptists' formulation of covenant theology in the Second London Confession of Faith was a modified version of the one contained in the Westminster Confession of Faith. But why the different formulation? Denault's work goes ad fontes (to the sources) to find the answer." - Richard C. Barcellos, Ph. D., Palmdale, CA

"Pascal Denault deserves many thanks for his labor in researching and describing the nuances of English covenant theology in the Seventeenth Century. He has uncovered significant factors contibuting to the differences between Presbyterian and Particular Baptist thought and practice, describing theological categories in easily accessible terms." - James M. Renihan, Ph.D., Institute of Reformed Baptist Studies

"I pray that this work will contribute to the raising up of more reformed covenantal baptist churches which avoid the errors of dispensationalism, theonomy, the Federal Vision, and law/gospel errors. It is worthy to be read by all concerned." - Fred A. Malone, Ph.D., author of 'Baptism of Disciplies Alone'

"Not only do I think that this is an excellent and valuable resource. I believe it is one of the best upon this suibject. This is such an informative and helpful book that I pray that our covenant Lord provodentially places this book into the hands of every student of covenant theology." - Jeffrey D. Johnson, author of 'The Fatal Flaw of the Theology Behind Infant Baptism'

"Denault's careful work on the seventeenth-century documents has yielded a strong, Bible-centered, covenantal defense of believers' baptism and is worthy of a dominant place in the contemporary discussions of both covenantalism and baptism." - Thomas J. Nettles, Ph.D., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

"This new study by Pascal Denault is most helpful in providing an accurate summary of the historic discussion between the Baptists and their fellow Puritans, and then showing the way this discussion bears on the contemporary treatment of a vital issue." - Michael A.G. Haykin, Th.D., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

"Whether one agrees or disagrees with Pascal's arguments and conclusion, nobody can read this book without admitting the seriousness and the soundness of the facts that are reported and that make it a most commendable book on the subject." - Raymond Perron, Ph.D., Quebec City, Qc

COVENANT THEOLOGY: A Baptist Distinctive
Edited by Earl M. Blackburn, Contributions by Walter Chantry, Ken Fryer, Fred Malone, Kenneth Puls and Justin Taylor

"Many works on the issue of covenantal theology can be thick and difficult. This work cuts through the fog, lays out the case, and argues persuasively that Baptists not only have a long history of dedication to biblical covenantalism, but that their commitment is fully consistent with their commitment to the authority of Scripture and particular Baptist distinctives related to the ordinances and ecclesiology. A welcomed and timely addition to the current literature on this important subject in a very readable form." - James White, Director of Alpha & Omega Ministries

"In the 20th Century, a minimalist theological climate developed among Baptists. Fighting for the fundamentals of the faith tended to reduce the importance of detailed confessional statements making only a few core doctrines central to Baptist identity. This modest doctrinal focus was stoutly defended by noble men, but in reducing Christian theology to a few essentials, they opened the door for a new structural system 'Dispensationalism' to overwhelm the older covenantalism of the Baptist churches and Confessions. Only in the later decades of the century has there been an attempt to recover the framework that was lost. This book is a helpful addition to the growing body of literature that demonstrates the centrality of covenantalism to Baptist life and practice. It will be very useful to assist in the recovery of our understanding of the older and more Scriptural system." - James M. Renihan; Dean, Institute of Reformed Baptist Studies

"This volume gathers into one place a helpful collection of thoughts on an important subject by respected Baptist writers. Those who think that covenant theology is synonymous with paedobaptism will find that notion debunked by the chapters in this book. If you are looking for a good introduction to exegetical, theological, historical and pastoral arguments for a thoroughly Baptist understanding of covenant theology, read this book." -Tom Ascol; Director of Founders Ministries & Pastor, Grace Baptist Church, Cape Coral, FL

"The 'Old Paths' of Baptist Covenant Theology are clearly set forth in this book edited by Earl Blackburn. This is a book that pastors need to get into the hands of their people as an introduction to this foundational truth. The summary by Pastor Blackburn gives a good foundation, the chapter on the hermeneutics of Covenant Theology presented by Dr. Fred Malone is good and beneficial, and the three chapters by Pastor Walter Chantry on the Covenants of Works and Grace, Imputation and Baptism make for a complete introduction to Baptist Covenant Theology. We are in debt to these men for the giving us this worthwhile volume." - Gordon Taylor; Coordinator for ARBCA, Carlisle, PA

THE GLORIOUS HISTORY OF REDEMPTION: A Compact Survey of the Old and New Testaments
by J. Gresham Machen and James Oscar Boyd

"Did you ever want to read a short book that unveils in an informative, sound, edifying, Reformed way the entire narrative of redemptive history from Genesis through Revelation? The OT scholar James Boyd and his NT counterpart, J. Gresham Machen, composed this book for you nearly a century ago, and I am grateful that Solid Ground Christian Books is unearthing and reprinting it. With helpful questions appended to each of its thirty-eight lessons, this little book makes an ideal tool for family worship so that you can lead your children quickly through the main redemptive thoughts of Bible history." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"This book surveys the history of God's redeeming grace. It reviews Old Testament history, disclosing the stream of God's redeeming purposes flowing down through older times. It also reviews New Testament history, disclosing the broadening and deepening of that purpose for us men and for mankind in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his Church." - Harold McA. Robinson

First published in 1922, this volume is one of the most precise and concise books I have ever seen that covers the entire narrative of redemptive history from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. James Boyd, the Old Testament scholar, and J. Gresham Machen, the New Testament scholar, join their efforts to reach the simple and the learned in one book. This book would be perfect as a tool in the family and the church, as it concludes each of the 38 chapters with a series of Questions on the Lesson.

THIS IS THE PERFECT BOOK TO GIVE TO A NEW BELEIVER.

James O. Boyd introduces the earliest chapters of the Bible immediately following man's Fall with these words: "God's tender love for his foolish, rebellious creatures 'will not let them go.' At the gates of the garden from which their sin has forever banished them, God already declares his purpose to 'bruise' the head of that serpent, Rom. 16:20, who had brought 'sin into the world and death by sin,' Gen. 3:15. Through the 'seed of the woman'---a 'Son of Man' of some future day---sinful man can escape the death he has brought on himself. And from Seth, the child 'appointed instead of' murdered Abel, a line of men descends, who believe this promise of God. Ch. 5. In Enoch we find them 'walking with God,' v. 24, in a fellowship that seemed lost when paradise was lost."

J. Gresham Machen opens Lesson II of his material entitled "The Coming of the Lord" with these powerful words: "When the Son of God came to earth for our salvation, the world was ready for his coming. The whole course of history had been made to lead up to him. And he was well worthy of being thus the goal of history. For the One who came was none other than the eternal Son of God, the Word who was with God and who was God. He had existed from all eternity; he had been the instrument in creating the world. He was himself truly God, the same in substance with the Father, and equal in power and glory. Yet the One who was so great humbled himself to be born as a man and finally to suffer and die. His coming was a voluntary act, an act of the Father in giving him for the sins of the world, and his own act which he performed because he loved us. It was an act of infinite condescension. The Son of God humbled himself to lead a true human life; he took upon himself our nature. He was born, he grew in wisdom and stature, he suffered, he died. He was always God, but he became also man. Who can measure the depth of such condescending love?"

ON THE WINGS OF GRACE ALONE: The Testimonies of Thirty Converted Roman Catholics
Edited by Richard M. Bennett and Glenn R. Diehl

It has often been said that all roads lead to Rome. That was true for those who contributed to the writing of this book. However, the road to Rome was a road that led them away from Jesus Christ. It was a road that led to a lack of peace with God and finally would have led them to eternal damnation. These thirty former Catholics discovered that the Roman Catholic Church was teaching things that were completely opposite to what the Bible taught.

MINDING YOUR FAITH: How Men Can Have Devotional Lives That Will Actually Affect Their Real Lives
Gregg Hodge

ARE YOU FULLY SATISFIED WITH YOUR DEVOTIONAL LIFE?

IS YOUR DAILY COMMUNION WITH THE LORD ALL YOU HOPE IT WILL BE?

This book is written especially for men who long to enjoy their relationship with the true and living God, but who find themselves floundering in their daily devotional life. Gregg Hodge has a peculiar burden for men who are in the second half of their lives, and he desires to help them prepare their hearts each day for the glory that is promised to every child of God.

In the introduction, the author writes:

"Every time I find myself languishing in self-pity, smoldering in anger or sinking in doubt; every time another failure strips my last hope or fatigue squelches my best intentions; whenever distractions jar my focus; whenever circumstances challenge my beliefs, or when my pain eclipses my joy, I begin, not by tending to my emotions, but by minding my faith. So my hope is to help you do the same for your own satisfaction and for God's Glory."

Endnotes

"As one who regularly reads and teaches books related to the history of biblical spirituality, I believe that I have some idea of wheat and chaff in this ever-growing field of thought and reflection. This new book by Gregg Hodge is definitely in the category of wheat, for here is solid, practical wisdom on how best to nourish the soul. So buy this book - ponder it - and do not be afraid to do what it says!" - Dr. Michael A.G. Haykin

You have been created to glorify God through enjoyment, which differs from the rest of God's creations. Glorifying God involves acknowledging our enjoyment of Him in the various ways He has made Himself known to us. However, you cannot fully enjoy Him and thereby glorify Him without essential specific knowledge about Him that is found only in the Bible. The effective life-changing process for gaining this knowledge is what this book calls minding your faith.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR-

GREGG HODGE grew up in Syracuse, New York and studied percussion with Gordon Stout at Ithaca Conservatory of Music. He wrote the #1 CCM single 'Father' with Morgan Cryar and 'If He Goes Before Me' with Barry Graul, which was a #2 hit for White Cross. He is a graduate of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. He now serves as singer-songwriter for Nashville-based Princeton Revival, which was created to promote and facilitate Christian manhood through teaching and music that is informed and empowered by historic Christian beliefs. After more than twenty-five years of preaching and teaching, Gregg felt compelled to put on paper a provocative challenge to himself and other men as they face the realities of the second half of their lives. Gregg is married to MaryAnn and they have three children: Dalton, Kalianne and Averi.

LEAVING DARKLAND: How God's Instruction Manual Gives Effective Prescriptions for Life's Most Difficult Problems
Ed Wallen with Foreword by Dr. Timothy George

"In 1986, Ed Wallen's beloved daughter, Susan, was killed in a tragic automobile accident. Two years later, in 1988, I moved to Birmingham, Alabama, to begin the work of Beeson Divinity School of Samford University. At that time, Ed was a pastor in the area, and we became good friends. Over the years, we have prayed together, travelled together, and ministered together. Ed's courage and spiritual integrity have shown through time and time again.

Ed's life was shattered by the death of his daughter and all that flowed from that event. In this book, he describes some of the pain he experienced. Sometimes 'dark nights of the soul' can be devastating to one's faith and trust in God. Sometimes they can leave the sufferer seemingly forever suspended on the gallows of 'Why?' and 'Why me?' Ed certainly writes as one 'acquainted with grief,' the kind of grief from which we all want to hide our faces. But he also writes as one who lives by the promises of God.

This is a book written 'out of the depths' (Ps. 130:1). This is a great book because it is an honest book, one that deals with the deepest agonies of human life in the light of God's providential love and overcoming grace. And this is a work of genuine pastoral theology. No shepherd of God's flock should be without it. Tolle lege! 'Take and read!'"

-DR.TIMOTHY GEORGE is the founding dean of Beeson Divinity School of Samford University and general editor of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture

"Leaving DarkLand is a contribution towards realism in a day when so many Christian leaders are deceiving people with false expectations for the Christian experience. But it is also a message of hope for all of us who have experienced the failures and tragedies of life and get crushed by them. It is a biblical antidote for the gloom and doubt which satan brings even upon the true children of God. I do not know of a book which has given such a comprehensive catalogue of the various negative emotions of true believers, how they affect God's people and how they can be managed. And it comes from a man who has walked a special road of grief and sadness.

This book is more than just an abstract treatise for me for it was my responsibility and privilege to try to comfort Ed and his friends as I conducted the funeral of the precious little child which lay in state before us. A more poignant and yet important opportunity I have never experienced. For that shattered life of the friend who listened I sought, as best as I could, to bring comfort from Heb. 12:28 which speaks of a 'Kingdom which cannot be shaken'. It is my hope and prayer that Leaving DarkLand will help the suffering, afflicted people of God who live in the modern world to press on in serving the Lord, with the dynamic message of this book before them." - JOHN F. THORNBURY, Th.M., D.Min.

"Leaving Darkland is a deeply spiritual resource for the person facing difficulty of any nature and is a good reference for a pastor who may be preaching on the problem of pain, evil, and suffering. Ed Wallen masterfully addresses the subject. He introduces it with the most painful day of his life and draws upon his personal experience as well as decades of bible study and pastoral ministry. It is biblically and theologically sound. The book was used by the Holy Spirit to encourage me. It is full of poems, hymn texts, and statements of saints of old. I thoroughly recommend this book. Reading it is good preparation for difficulties to come and encouragement and instruction for persons in difficulty." -DR. HUGH RICHARDSON

"'Our theology must eventually become our biography. You will never know how strong the foundation of your faith is until walk through this DarkLand.' These sage-like words by my friend, Ed Wallen, describes a pilgrimage through the pain and grief precipitated by the loss of a loved one. In Ed's case, his beloved daughter was taken from this life way too early. Throughout the years since her death, Ed Wallen has been on a journey through the DarkLand of suffering and sorrow. As a fellow struggler in the grief process and as an author of a well written book, Ed can be your human guide through the DarkLand of grief. This is not an easy road to travel but with the grace of God as your sustenance and with people of faith, like Ed Wallen, you will discover there is light at end of the DarkLand."-RICK LANCE

SEEKING GOD: Do You Really Want To Know God?
Peter Jeffery

NOW AVAILABLE ONCE AGAIN.

SEEKING GOD by Peter Jeffery is one of the most powerful evangelistic tools ever written. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is presented in a simple and clear manner that will leave the reader with no excuse.

Thousands of copies have circled the globe and touched and changed untold lives. Eternity alone will reveal all that the Lord has accomplished through this precious booklet.

"We have used Peter Jeffrey's 'Seeking God' for many years to show unbelievers of all ages how to 'seek the Lord while He may be found'. It has proved most effective in special Sunday School classes, as a popular item on our tract rack with visitors and in believers' personal distribution to their friends. Seeking God shows you how to seek God, cautions you how NOT to seek God and encourages you as to why it all matters. Unlike so much fluff today, this is older, wiser, biblical counsel from a veteran 'obstetrician of souls.'" - Steve Martin, Former Executive Director of ARBCA

"It is refreshing to read a booklet which contains the heart and soul of the gospel. Each page is a gem" - Christian Herald

OPENING UP EPHESIANS: A Study for New Christians and Young People
Peter Jeffery

Peter Jeffery is one of the clearest and ablest expounders of God's truth alive today. His books have circled the globe and been translated into several languages.

This book is intended to explain and apply the book of Ephesians for those in the formative years of their Christian life. Perfect for High School and College age Sunday School classes, New Believer's Sunday School, Bible Studies or personal study, it has several challenging questions following each chapter, plus a Digging Deeper section for those eager to search the Bible more thoroughly.

"When I hear the name Peter Jeffery, I immediately think of the author who is known for his ability to put profound biblical truth in readable, understandable and memorable language. That ability is on display again in this volume as Mr. Jeffery explains both the sublime doctrine and the practical instruction of the apostle Paul in his letter to the Ephesians. The young people for whom this volume is intended will find Peter Jeffery's clear and perceptive style much to their liking. They are certain to come away from their reading of it with a greater understanding of the glory of salvation and with firm determination to live more for the glory of the One who graciously provided it." - Roger Ellsworth

THE OFFICE AND WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
James Buchanan

James Buchanan was born in 1804. He held several pastorates before becoming Professor Apologetics and later of Systematic Theology at the Free Church College in Edinburgh. He attained great fame as a preacher, his manner in the pulpit being marked by sustained clarity of thought and eloquent evangelical fervour. The most experimental of Buchanan's theological works is the one from which this article is taken, The Office and Work of the Holy Spirit, which was first published in 1843 and then republished by the Banner of Truth Trust in 1966.

"James Buchanan belonged to the bright galaxy of theologians who graced the early days of the Free Church of Scotland. His brilliant and uniquely conceived treatment of the Holy Spirit expounds his Ministry first biblically and theologically, then in a series of biographical studies, and finally systematically in the life of the Christian. Buchanan superbly combines the reliable with the readable, the doctrinal with the practical, the theological with the devotional. 'The Office and Work of the Holy Spirit' is a classic work on the Holy Spirit and a master class in theology." - Sinclair Ferguson

"James Buchanan was a pastor-theologian whose preaching and writing were precious gifts of Christ to the church. His classic book on the Holy Spirit is especially full in its treatment of the conversion of sinners, considered both in its doctrinal aspects and in several cases of conversion reported in the Scriptures. His writing exemplifies the biblical, doctrinal, experiential, and practical quality of the Reformed tradition. Highly recommended." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"We find in Dr. James Buchanan's 'The Office and Work of the Holy Spirit,' and in Dr. George Smeaton's 'The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit,' two treatises covering the whole ground; the one in a more practical, the other in a more didactic spirit; and both in a manner worthy of the best traditions of our Puritan fathers." - B.B. Warfield

"When theological ignorance seems to be at an all time low in the pulpits of American churches comes great help from 19th century Scotland. -Who is the Holy Spirit? -What is He doing and what has He done? -What is the new birth, conversion, illumination? -Where can I find illustrations in Scripture of these most important truths? Thank you, SOLID GROUND, for bringing back one of the great practical theology works of the past!

Nineteenth century Scotland was blessed with many theological "oaks". James Buchanan was one of them and this work is one of his best. Pastors, take your elders and deacons and then the men of the church through this book and bless them all and strengthen your church!" - Steve Martin, Retired confessional Baptist pastor of 31 years, State Coordinator of the Georgia Association of Confessional Baptist Churches

THIS IS THE MOST PRACTICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL OF ALL BUCHANAN'S CLASSIC WORKS!

8. Conversions at Pentecost, Acts 2.

9. Revivals, Acts 2:17, 18.

Part 3. - THE SPIRIT'S WORK IN THE EDIFICATION OF HIS PEOPLE AFTER THEIR CONVERSION.

1. The Spirit's Work as the Spirit of Holiness.

2. The Spirit's Work as the Spirit of Adoption.

3. The Spirit's Work as the Spirit of Prayer.

4. The Spirit's Work as the Comforter.

Buchanan concludes this masterpiece with these words: "And now on a calm and comprehensive review of all that has been said concerning the Work of the Holy Spirit, both in the Conversion of Sinners, and in the Edification of His People, how appropriate to the case of every reader, whatever may be his character, are the prayers of David;--'Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me by thy free Spirit.' -- 'Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy Spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness."

BO MEETS A HERO: A Wounded Army Vet Joins with Bo, the Three-Legged Dog, to Teach Children Invaluable Lessons
Sharman Martin, with Photographs by Karim Shamsi-Basha

Follow the adventures of Bo, a real-life, three-legged dog who lost his right leg in a terrible accident, but who persevered and won the heart of his new owner and the author of the book. Although this is written for young children, parents and teachers will find this story tugging at their hearts, as they see the value and integrity of all creatures of our God and King.

In this second BO BOOK Bo meets a real-life hero from the Iraq War, Noah Galloway who lost an arm and leg while serving his country. Noah has persevered to become a national hero to thousands who have heard him speak about overcoming disabilities. One purpose of the book is to share how one can overcome trials that are sent as a test from the Lord.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Noah Galloway has recently been featured on the TV show DANCING WITH THE STARS and has been overwhelming people with his story of courage. Please pray for Noah as doors continue to fly open all over the country, and as he begins to speak about this book. Pray for him as he will be facing new challenges even more dangerous than what he faced in Iraq.

A PRAYER FOR ALL IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY

O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honor and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

JEREMIAH: A Parable of Jesus
Douglas D. Webster

The Gospel according to Jeremiah provides some of the best statements of hope and promise in all the Bible. Beyond his costly obedience and faithful endurance, Jeremiah expressed the gospel message of hope. He was the prophet of God's gracious promise: "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." He would be disappointed to be remembered only for his messages of judgment and lamentation, because he saw himself as the prophet of the Lord's new covenant.

Long before the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, Jeremiah embodied the Gethsemane mind-set, took up his cross daily and lived in the power of the resurrection. In his hard-hitting prophetic message, the hope of the Gospel prevailed. Jeremiah's life was a parable of Jesus pointing forward to "The Lord Our Righteousness." Jeremiah didn't sermonize, he embodied the word of the Lord in his life and character. He was not the Incarnate One, but he lived an incarnational life.

"'JEREMIAH: A Parable of Jesus' is brimming with exegetical sensitivity and pastoral insight. Lacking the sterile detachment of much contemporary literature, Webster's engagement with Jeremiah has within it a palpable urgency that is similar to the prophetic book itself. What Jeremiah says, what Jeremiah complains about, what Jeremiah is passionate about, all of these questions matter in this exposition. For Webster the exegesis of Jeremiah is not merely an exercise in historical excavation. Jeremiah's prophetic word is alive. Because of this canonical commitment, Webster masterfully pushes beyond a mere description of the text to its subject matter and significance. This is theological and pastoral exegesis that is sure to cahllenge its readers and stimulate a love for the gospel of Jesus Christ and the transformative power it contains." - Mark Gignilliat, auther of 'Karl Barth and the Fifth Gospel: Barth's Theological Exegesis of Isaiah,' Assistant Professor of Divinity at Beeson Divinity School

THE TRUTH SET US FREE: Twenty Former Nuns Tell Their Stories of God's Amazing Grace
Edited by Richard Bennett with Mary Hertel

Vatican Council II was completed in 1965. The Roman Catholic Church appeared to have changed her position towards Biblical believers. The Council had pronounced that they were now to be seen as 'separated brethren' (although it also reaffirmed the Council of Trent, which four hundred years earlier had declared Biblical believers to be heretics). Catholics could now 'dialogue' with them, enter their churches, and go to their Bible studies.

In the more than forty years that have elapsed since then, much confusion has arisen both among Catholics and among Biblical believers as to where each stands today. This volume brings the steady light of Scripture and the clear testimonies of twenty 20th century women to bear on this murky religious confusion of our times.

These women became nuns in Roman Catholic convents as their finest means of serv-ing God. The testimonies are 'inside stories', intensely personal, wonderfully down-to-earth. They ask--and finally get the right answers to--some of the same questions that you yourself might ask.

The solid promise of Holy God in Scripture is, 'And ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye search for Me with all your heart.' This volume is modern testimony to that living promise.

The book will be of avid interest to -

- dedicated Roman Catholics who often do not know the realities of convent life

- lapsed Catholics who have become discouraged by the practice of a religious faith which has not answered his or her inner emptiness and confusion

- Evangelicals who are being drawn more closely into 'dialogue' with Roman Catho-lics, unaware of the inner workings of that huge, seemingly mysterious system

Richard Bennett, born in Ireland, entered the Dominican Order in 1956, finished at the Angelicum University in Rome, Italy, in 1964. He spent twenty-one years as a Roman Catholic priest in Trinidad, West Indies. He was saved by God's grace in 1986 and formally left the Roman Catholic Church and its priesthood. Presently settled in central Texas, he is director of the Berean Beacon.

Mary Hertel, born into a strong Roman Catholic family, entered the Order of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1963. She left it in 1969 and was saved by God's grace in 1989.
