click for details | | THE YOUNG LADY'S GUIDE to the Harmonious Development of Christian Character Harvey Newcomb
"A good book from the past for the needs of the present. It is a 'Teacher's Manual' by which parents may scripturally and practically guide their daughters along the path of goodness and godliness. Its principles and practices are lights along the pathway of life for young ladies who desire to become godly women for the glory of God. It should be read, studied, prayed over, and put into practice by parents, young ladies, and - yes - even young men! It should be in every home, and in the library of every young lady. It is a 'companion' book for a lifetime." - Pastor Don Scott
For years the publisher has been searching for a companion volume to THOUGHTS FOR YOUNG MEN by J.C. Ryle. This is it! Harvey Newcomb (1803-1863) wrote 178 volumes, mostly for children and young adults. This volume, YOUNG LADY'S GUIDE, was by far his most popular book, and is subtitled To The Harmonious Development of Christian Character. In the words of the author, "The 'Young Lady's Guide' was intended for a class of females, who have attained some degree of maturity of character, and who are supposed already to have entered upon a religious life." This would be a wonderful gift for graduation from High School or College. While some of the language is dated, having been written over 150 years ago, it nevertheless speaks directly to the heart and mind of young ladies who desire to serve Jesus Christ in the 21st century.

click for details | | WOMAN: Her Mission and Her Life with New Section: Four Monod Women Adolphe Monod, a New Translation by Constance K. Walker, Editor
Adolphe Monod is best known for his book "Monod's Farewell" which was is being published by Solid Ground Christian Books under the title LIVING IN THE HOPE OF GLORY. Monod was a gifted preacher in the Reformed Church in France. This volume is the substance of two sermons preached to the congregation in Paris in February 1848.
The Translator has written, "In 2003, Solid Ground Christian Books reprinted an 1852 British translation of this monograph, which has been received with some enthusiasm. Now, as part of a series of Monod's works, a new translation is being offered. The goal has been to produce an English edition that is both more readable and more accurate than the earlier one. As in the other volumes in the Monod Classics collection, headings have been introduced to bring out the underlying structure and progression of the text.
A new feature of this edition is a section showing how Adolphe Monod's teaching was exemplified in the lives of his mother Louise, his sister Adele, his wife Hannah and his daughter Sarah. This section is made up mainly of quotations from family correspondence and diaries."
"You will read and read...and read, through tears and laughter, while wondering how any man could be so astute, so tender, so frank, and so inspiring in speaking to his Christian sisters-whatever their position in life- of the glorious, fearful, humbling and immensely influential calling of the Christian woman. In these pages, written long ago, you will nonetheless find your mother, your sisters, your friends, and mostly yourself, as you hear the passionate voice of a godly pastor and tender brother calling you to repent, to take heart, to reconsider, to resist, and to persevere in the life of humility and love to which you are called in Christ." - Rebecca Clowney Jones
"In this treasure of a book Monod makes crystal clear that the godly woman's overarching mission is to glorify God. Under that ultimate mission Monod clarifies how the godly woman is to do that specifically. He calls it her "distincitive mission." He says, "Do not count on the world to clarify this mission for you. It has never known it, and cannot understand it..." He calls on the reader to "rely on the Word of God." Skillfully unpacking the Word of God, Monod strikingly and specifically communicates the "distincitive mission" of the godly woman and grounds all of His thoughts on the Word of God. This book will equip you for your ultimate mission to glorify God and clarify your distinctive mission as a faithful woman." - Lori Rhodes, wife of Ray Rhodes of 'Nourished in the Word Ministries', and mother of five daughters
"Adolphe Monod was one of the brightest lights in the French Awakening of the 19th century. On the surface this text shows him to be a child of his times. But underneath, it is a passionate defense of the biblical view which sees men and women as ontologically equal yet economically different. That is, in their being as God's creatures, they are equally image-bearers. In their functions and responsibilities they are complementary. In Constance Walker's translation the text is as alive in English as it is in the original French. This text is required reading for the present conversation." - Bill Edgar, Westminister Theological Seminary

| | | | MANLY DOMINION: In a Passive-Purple-Four-Ball World! Mark Chanski
Are you a passive-purple-four-ball?
In billiards, the four-ball is passive; it's the one that gets knocked around by the other balls. Christian man, is that you? Are you knocked around by your environment, rather than taking your God-given assignment to lead?
Are you passive when faced with difficult situations at home, church or work?
Unfortunately, the world today is filled with many passive-purple-four-ball men, who are clueless as to how to deal with their work environment, relate to their wives, raise their children, spiritually guide their families, and lead with confidence in their churches.
Mark Chanski's book is a clarion call to all Christian men to face life's challenges with Manly Dominion. It will challenge and encourage you to lead, wherever God places you, with Spirit-filled conviction. The wisdom contained herein is from the most reliable source known: GodÆs Word, the Bible. As you read, you will discover that Chanski touches on just about every subject that a man needs to consider in his life, and he does so with unequalled clarity.
No Christian man (or woman!) living in today's world should be without it.

click for details | | A MANUAL FOR THE YOUNG: An Exposition of Proverbs 1-9 Charles Bridges
A Manual for the Young is a book that combines two works by Charles Bridges suited for and directed to those in the prime of life. The first, and larger part of this work, is Bridges justly famous Exposition of Proverbs 1-9, which is extracted from his complete Commentary on the Book of Proverbs. In his own words, in 1859 he published the first nine chapters of his exposition with the title A Manual for the Young, "in accordance with suggestions repeatedly made to me." The second, and briefer part, is called An Address to Young Persons After Confirmation, which was used for many years in both the US and the UK as a gift for those just entering the Christian life. It is a fitting conclusion to his exposition of Proverbs, and is here reprinted for the first time in more than a century.
Spurgeon said of Bridges work on Proverbs, "THE BEST WORK ON PROVERBS. The Scriptural method of exposition so well carried out by Bridges renders all his writings very suggestive to ministers. While explaining the passage in hand, he sets other portions of the Word in new light.

click for details | | TO HAVE AND TO HOLD: The Christian Minister's Affectionate Advice to a Married Couple James Bean and Henry Venn
The American Tract Society published this small work in 1820 which was intended to be given as a gift to the newly married and to older married couples as well. It contains a wealth of "affectionate advice" from the heart of a Christian minister who spent his life seeking to "present every man (and woman) complete in Christ."
This small book also includes a beautiful letter from the pen and heart of Rev. Henry Venn, author of "The Complete Duty of Man" which he wrote in 1777 to his newly married cousin. This ten page letter demonstrates the seriousness with which the marriage union was treated in a former day.
TO HAVE AND TO HOLD would make the perfect gift for every married couple, but especially those who are newlyweds, or who are considering and/or pursuing marriage.
" Bean's 'Advice to a new -married couple;' is a work, which has obtained great celebrity in Great Britain, and which deserves a place in the library of every christian family. The book is, indeed, but little known on this side of the water; but the extract on Evander and Theodosia (from Chapter Five) will give no unfavourable impression of its merits, both as it regards the sentiments it contains, and the manner in which those sentiments are delivered. We cannot too earnestly recommend the present performance to the perusal of every one who wishes to form a just estimate of the duties belonging to the married state." - The Missionary Magazine, by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the USA in 1806
"This useful little work, from the pen of a highly respectable English clergyman, has passed through six editions in England, and one large edition in this country. This second American edition is respectfully recommended to the clergy of all denominations, as a valuable and unexceptionable present to young heads of families." - Advertisement in front of this American edition from 1824

click for details | | SERMONS FOR CHRISTIAN FAMILIES: On the Most Important Relative Duties Edward Payson
"The cultivation of domestic piety and morality is the surest means of elevating the character of our species, and of advancing their welfare both for this world and that which is to come. The good father cannot be a bad citizen; and the child, trained to habits of subordination and duty in the family, will be likely to carry these habits with him into the extended relations of mature life. The rule and measure of human duty is the law of God. A character formed on any other basis, or shaped by any other model, than the Word of God, must be essentially defective. Deep piety constitutes the only sure foundation of a pure morality; and any system of education which overlooks this, and provides only for a reputable passage through the present world.
This is designed for a Family Book. It delineates character, enforces obligations, and inculcates duties, by the observance of which, with the blessing of God, families become nurseries of the church of Christ. Christian fathers, the members of maternal associations, all pious mothers indeed, will find it a welcome companion, a faithful monitor and friend. That such a work is greatly needed, there is but too much evidence in the prevailing laxity of family government and discipline. That it may be instrumental of reviving Family Religion, - 'of turning the heart of the fathers unto the children, and the heart of the children unto their fathers, and thus of averting the curse of God from our land,' - is the prayer of the Editor." - June 1832

"Sermons for Christian Families is Edward Payson at his best--full of wisdom and practicality, majoring in the majors, and warmly devotional in spirit. With this reprint, Payson will again be recognized as being on par with William Jay and J.C. Ryle as among the best of former preachers who unabashedly proclaimed the whole counsel of God to families in an eminently charitable, challenging, and convicting manner. As parents, read these sermons for your own edification, then read them aloud with passion to your teenagers and older children." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids
"Edward Payson entered deeply into the love of Christ, and reflected it to an eminent degree. Reading this book will surely bring blessings to the churches of our day." - Iain Murray
"Among the preachers of previous eras, Edward Payson stands tall. His profound meditation on God's Word gave his preaching and writing an unction that can lead men and women to be taken up more and more with the glorious being that is the triune God. Highly recommended." - Michael A.G. Haykin
""These powerful messages are at least as pertinent today as in the day they were given. Solid Ground Books does us a service in making them more widely available again. Here is substantive exposition of Scripture searchingly applied to the soul. Payson is unsparing in pointing out sin but is also faithful to point to Christ. In spite of the age of the material, the book is quite readable. This book will be beneficial to any family." - Dr. Ray Van Neste

An old favorite, back in print in a new hardcover edition! This was one of our most requested Out of Print books for years - and now available again!
Jeff and Danielle were determined to do things differently. So, before the era of "True Love Waits" or the writing of I Kissed Dating Goodbye, they interviewed married couples to discover the keys to a successful courtship. They applied these principles in their own relationship and later, wrote this humorous, heart-warming book. 15 years later, they have re-released an updated version of this classic, which has given tens of thousands of young couples honest and straightforward counsel about the best way to prepare for marriage.
"Jeff and Danielle prove that God's plan for relationships is not out of date or old-fashioned - it's for the adventurous, courageous and most importantly, romantic Christian single who wants God's best in relationships and marriage." -- Joshua Harris, Senior Pastor, Covenant Life Church, Gaithersburg, MD and author of I Kissed Dating Goodbye and Boy Meets Girl: Say Hello to Courtship.

| | | | FAMILY REFORMATION The Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva Scott Brown
While the doctrine of salvation was being reformed during the sixteenth century, so was marriage, manhood, womanhood, courtship, child raising, fertility, abortion, and almost every area that touches family life. John Calvin never wrote a book on the family, but he touched off a family reformation. He was the instigator of a massive restructuring of the most fundamental institution of society.
Like no other reformer, Calvin provided the exegetical precision that defined the terms for a biblical vision of family life. With crystal clarity he explained the details of the how the family had exchanged the glory of God for a lie. We should be thankful to this dear brother for excavating the gold mines of the Bible and exposing the raw biblical language and bedrock principles that form the doctrine of the Christian family.
This book seeks to communicate the main themes of Calvin s teaching on family life in his own words, using quotes from his books, sermons, letters, and other writings. In Geneva there were many victories in the battle to reform the family. Let me suggest that it may be difficult to win today s battles for the family unless we understand the victories of the sixteenth century.
"Scott Brown has done us yeoman service in culling the vast corpus of John Calvin in order to amass hundreds of valuable quotations on what this colossal Reformer had to say on marriage and family. What a fascinating treasure-trove Family Reformation is, addressing scores of subjects that are as pertinent today as in CalvinÆs own day! As always, Calvin is scriptural, practical, thorough, succinct, powerful, and honest. This may well be one of the best and most helpful marriage and family books on the market today. Use it as your daily devotional, and give a copy to your friends. Every conscientious family will be enriched by CalvinÆs wise advice." -Dr. Joel Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

| | | | GOSPEL INTIMACY In A Godly Marriage Alan Dunn
The greatest threat to genuine intimacy in marriage, even when two redeemed sinners become one flesh, is sin. Alan Dunn's book on gospel intimacy is intended to help identify and overcome those barriers and hindrances to genuine closeness.
The author navigates the journey in the light of the doctrines of God, creation, fall and redemption. He then addresses the grace of gospel love, and it is here that facing sin in a relationship comes to the fore. Only the gospel can teach us to love our spouse in the face of remaining sin. Realistically facing our sins, cultivating a disposition of forgiveness and forbearance, and the nature of those 'gospel transactions' that enable married sinners to press on together are all helpfully explained. In the third part, the specific challenges of headship and submission, selfishness, unbiblical communication, and unavoidable death are assessed in the light of Scripture, with instruction, counsel and encouragement wisely and graciously offered. The author's experience as a pastor and husband is helpfully evident.
Clearly, the book is directed primarily to Christian couples (married or contemplating marriage). Slightly unusually, but rightly, the weight of application is toward husbands as those called to set the tone of gospel love in a marriage (the section on headship brings out the nuances of this). At the same time, Christians in various situations will find rich principles that will guide them not just with regard to marriage, but in understanding their environment, their hearts, their relationships with others, and the gospel realities which underpin peace and unity not just in marriage but in friendships, in the family more broadly, and in the church.
There are many books on marriage, but few that deal with the heart of the matter - in terms of sin and the gospel grace in Christ that overcomes it - with the brevity, clarity and profundity of this volume. Practical on the deepest level, it is warmly recommended as a gospel recipe for repairing damage and developing and maintaining true intimacy in a godly marriage.
"The shelves of Christian bookstores are filled with "how to" books addressing a broad spectrum of issues related to marriage. However, there is a dearth of material that addresses the bedrock issues of marriage from a foundationally theological and pervasively gospel perspective. This is the much needed task that Alan Dunn has accomplished for us.
Any couple contemplating marriage will find in this book the divine template for true intimacy in their marriage. The married couple who are enjoying much multi-leveled intimacy will be strengthened in that intimacy as they read and assimilate the biblical perspectives contained in it. Those with a troubled marriage may find that the gospel is indeed the power of God unto salvation--even salvation from a troubled to a God-honoring, mutually fulfilling marital intimacy that will fulfill God's intention--namely, that a Christian marriage would reflect the relationship of Christ and His church. I cannot commend too enthusiastically the fruit of Pastor Dunn's labors captured on the pages of this book." - Albert N. Martin

| | | | THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY A Fresh Translation of a Classic Reformed Work Herman Bavinck, Translated by Nelson D. Kloosterman
A century ago when this book was first published, marriage and the family were already weathering enormous changes, and that trend has not abated. Yet by God's power the unchanging essence of marriage and the family remains proof, as Bavinck notes, that God's "purpose with the human race has not yet been achieved."
Neither a ten-step guide nor a one-sided approach, this book embodies a Christian theology of marriage and the family. Accessible, thoroughly biblical, and astonishingly relevant, it offers a mature and concise handling of the origins of marriage and family life and the effects of sin on these institutions, an appraisal of historic Christian approaches, and an attempt to apply that theology.
Aptly reminding Christians that "the moral health of society depends on the health of family life," Bavinck issues an evergreen challenge to God's people: "Christians may not permit their conduct to be determined by the spirit of the age, but must focus on the requirement of God's commandment."
Introduction by James Eglinton
"Those who know and love Herman Bavinck as the magisterial theologian and author of the Reformed Dogmatics, will enjoy the change of pace in this biblically rich and historically aware theology of marriage and family. While they might not share all of Bavinck's applications, contemporary readers will be rewarded by a sympathetic reading. They will be challenged on precisely the issues that threaten the family today because Bavinck applied biblical wisdom to his own prescient reading of trends in Western culture and society. They will also be encouraged because Bavinck so obviously loved the family and celebrated it in hope. A great read for those who are married or contemplating marriage and family." John Bolt, Professor of Systematic Theology, Calvin Theological Seminary, Editor, Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics
"Who should read this book? Those who are tired of the micromanaging trivia of so much of the output of the reformed evangelical 'how to raise your family' industry? Those who are fed up of the cliched writing that dominates the genre today? Those who want insights into how a truly great theologian understood the family? Those who just want some simple, sanctified Christian common sense instead of banal how-to manuals pretending to be pious wisdom? All of the above. This is a good, solid presentation, a little dated in places but on the whole well-worth reading." - Carl R. Trueman

| | | | WHAT'S INSIDE? Finding the Right One in Light of the Beatitudes Donald Thomas
When the divorce rate of professing Christians mirrors that of an unbelieving world, something is terribly wrong. Often that "something" dates back to the selection process itself. Sadly many singles make the fatal error of looking on the outside rather than the heart.
Be prepared to discover:
* God's role of the father through the selection process;
* How to apply our Lord's eight beatitudes to discern a spiritual heartbeat;
* Four ways the single life can best advance the kingdom of God;
* How to be proactive in finding the right one;
* How to have full-assurance that you are the right one.
What's Inside is a must read for every Christian parent and single person seeking God's will for a happy marriage.
"Christian parents long for their own children to know the Lord and live for His glory. This often means...that they will marry and raise families. Marriage choices are so important. It seems to me that Christians often fall to extremes, either they create a new legalism with regulations, stipulations and standards that are probably more Victorian than biblical, or they take the approach that 'any ol' pumpkin will do.' Pastor Don Thomas gives some good challenges for parents and young Christians seeking a spouse." - Brian Borgman, Pastor of Grace Community Church, Minden, NV
About the Author - Donald Thomas, is the pastor-teacher of Trinity Bible Church in Powell, Wyoming. He received a Master's Degree from Talbot Theological Seminary and a J.D. from John Marshall Law School. He practiced law in California and served as a professor at the Simon Greenleaf School of Law. He and his wife Mary have seven grown children and seventeen grandchildren.

click for details | | SECRETS OF HAPPY HOME LIFE J.R. Miller
NEW PRINTING NOW AVAILABLE
"Secrets of Happy Home Life" by J.R. Miller is a little book that can transform every home that it enters. The Spirit of God blesses the truth and nothing but the truth, and this booklet is filled with truth. It was first published in 1894, and immediately found its way into homes and hearts all over the world. Tens of thousands of copies were printed and stories came from far and wide about marriages that were preserved from certain destruction by the simple, biblical instruction found in these pages.
Jerry Bridges said, "Secrets of Happy Home Life is one of the most helpful and heartwarming books I have read on family relationships. Though written a hundred years ago, its message is timeless and much needed today."
"This little volume is priceless! Miller rightly and forthrightly tells his readers that Christ is the secret of a happy home life; but he doesn't leave that as a nebulous concept. Miller breaks this truth into bite-sized pieces of spiritual instruction that bring soul nourishment on every page. The approach is truly pastoral. The memorable phrases teach practically, convict consistently, and comfort surely. This is a fine tool for the Holy Spirit to use in bringing the grace of Christ to the homes of believers. Pastors: Get it into the hands of every one of your church families. You won't regret the investment!" - Bill Shishko, Pastor, Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Franklin Square, NY
Don Whitney added, "The language of this little book is quaint, but its truths are timeless. Miller wrote with a warm, sweet-spirited style."
Randy Stinson, of The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, said, "This is an absolute 'must read' for engaged couples, newlyweds, and marriage veterans, who will all benefit from this insightful and instructive little book."

click for details | | MOTHERS OF THE WISE AND GOOD: Anecdotes and Essays on the Incredible Influence of Mothers Throughout Church History Jabez Burns
"This book answers the very questions that today's women are asking. The engaging anecdotes and instructive essays are wonderful. I have looked for a book like this for many years. Every mother, grandmother, and spiritual mother - in others words, every woman - will find great help and hope in this book." - Susan Hunt
This book was written in 1846 to honor the role of a mother. Brief biographical sketches are given of such wise and good men as Augustine, John Newton, Jonathan Edwards and many others with special emphasis upon the way that their mothers were used of God in their lives. Susan Hunt says that this is the book she has been seeking for many years to give young mothers to encourage them in their task. Elisabeth Elliot and Nancy Wilson commend this work very highly.
"It is a useful and valuable work, replete with instruction and encouragement...it deserves to have a wide circulation." - John Angell James
"One of the great helps to the modern church is the reprinting of old books by saints of a previous generation. This book has much to offer us in our day where motherhood is not given the honor it deserves." - Nancy Wilson
"The writer has been powerfully struck by the fact, that there are few good works which are directly adapted to give the information, and supply the help which is needed. Good thoughts and interesting facts on this subject are scattered abroad through the length and breadth of our moral and religious literature; but thus it is almost unavailable to those whose benefit and encouragement should be chiefly aimed at.
The plan designed in this volume has been to furnish within a portable and convenient size, a series of delightful instances of the success of pious maternal influence, interspersed with various striking incidents, both in prose and verse, calculated to interest and improve the mind, and followed by short essays on the various duties and responsibilities of the Christian mother.
To collect and arrange has been the chief duty of the Author, being satisfied that it would have been impossible, for him, at least, to have provided original articles of equal value, and as directly adapted to the end contemplated. That the book may prove instructive, edifying and useful, under God's blessing, to that most numerous, important, and influential class for whom it is chiefly designed, is the earnest and prayerful desire of the Author."- Jabez Burns, March 1846

click for details | | THE HOME BEAUTIFUL: Timeless Words of Wisdom for Today's Family J.R. Miller
Jeff Schwend of GraceGems.org wrote the following: "If there is one author I wish I had read early in my Christian life, it is J.R. Miller--his invaluable Biblical and wise counsel would have saved me from many blunders and sins. No author is so helpful in the realm of practical Christian living as J.R. Miller! 'THE HOME BEAUTIFUL' is must reading for those who desire a loving, wholesome and Christ-centered home!"
The Moody Monthly said the following about the 1945 edition: "These pages teem with gracious counsel, admonition and help from the pen of an unusually thoughtful man of warm sympathies, a rich life experience and a broad outloook. His thesis has been developed on the highest level of Christian thought and feeling."
The Northwestern Lutheran wrote the following: "This volume deserves to find a place in every home. It is well written and well established on the Scriptures. A BETTER GIFT THAN THIS CANNOT BE BOUGHT WITH MONEY."
From the Original Foreword:
"Several months before the death of Dr. J.R. Miller, he made plans for THE HOME BEAUTIFUL. The suggestion had been made to him that it would be helpful if he would take the heart of the books "Week Day Religion," "Practical Religion," "Home Making," and "In His Steps," and make a new volume on Christian home life. It was his purpose to improve on the suggestion made to him by preparing a number of new chapters. The plan was not to be carried out. God called him from earth before he was able to do more than begin preparation of the volume.
However, he talked so fully of his plans to his associates, that it has been possible to arrange "The Home Beautiful" in a manner that it is felt to be in accordance with the wishes of one whose life was devoted to inspiring men, women and children to the life that alone can make the home really beautiful." --John T. Faris, October 1912
This is a masterpiece on the family. It is so simple, and yet so powerful, as it sets forth the privileges and responsibilities of each member of the household in making the home a beautiful place to both live and die.

"If any 19th century American Christian writer warrants reprinting, it is J. R. Miller! His writing style is delightfully smooth, his insights are spiritual diamonds on every page, and his pastoral applications are delivered with the skill of a well-seasoned physician of souls." (Pastor Bill Shishko, Franklin Square, NY)
A contemporary said the following about all the writings of this gifted and godly man:
"His books are restful and soothing, full of quiet but fresh inspiration and cheery optimism. They have comforted and encouraged countless thousands of readers."
One friend paid this tribute to J. R. Miller: "We all loved him. His gentleness made him great. His winsomeness had no weakness in it. Somehow everybody felt drawn to him. He seemed so closely in touch with the best in heart and life. He was as gentle as a child, yet firm as a rock. He was lovable and helpful; always true, always tender."

"Old Paths for Little Feet is a much needed work for our children. The poignant quotes from voices of the past coupled with Carol's insightful applications make a powerful combination. Christian mothers who are serious about imparting truth to their children on a daily basis will greatly value this practical work." - Mary K. Mohler, wife of Dr. Albert Mohler, Southern Seminary, Louisville, KY
"Carol Brandt provides a solid balance of theological teaching and helpful illustrations in leading our children in the Lord. Reminding us of the importance of sound biblical doctrine, she instructs parents on our unique responsibilities to teach and love our children, so that they know of their sin and of God's sovereignty, judgment, and abounding grace in Christ Jesus. I wholeheartedly recommend the book and its teaching!" -Michael H. Griffin, Elder, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC
"Many good reasons could be given for publishing this book. I believe the most important reason is that all Christian teaching, all Christian experience must have a sound doctrinal foundation. In my opinion, the doctrinal emphasis is the most important part of the book."-from the Preface by Ernie Reisinger

click for details | | THE CHILD AT HOME: Living to Please God and Your Parents John S.C. Abbott
"This book is intended for the children of those families to which 'The Mother at Home' has gone. It is prepared with the hope that it may exert an influence upon the minds of the children, in exciting grattitude for their parents' love, and in forming characters which shall ensure future usefulness and happiness." - From the author's Preface
John Abbott (1805-1877) was the brother of Jacob Abbott and the author of numerous works especially for children and young people. He was educated at Bowdoin college and Andover theological seminary, graduating from the former in 1825. He was ordained to the ministry in the Congregational church in 1830, and was settled successively at Worcester, Roxbury, and Nantucket, Mass. His first published work, "The Mother at Home," appeared in 1833, and was followed later that year by "The Child at Home." In 1844 he relinquished the pastorate, and devoted himself exclusively to literature, but occasionally resumed his ministerial labors for brief periods, and in 1866-'8 acted as state supply in New Haven.
"In a moving, illustrative way, Abbott's The Child at Home powerfully cultivates within children's consciences the need to honor God and their parents by promoting the need for heartfelt obedience, religious truth, genuine piety, biblical character traits, a sense of responsibility, and a dread of deception. The dozens of stories included make this book understandable for even very young children, while simultaneously retaining the interest of teenagers. Buy this book for every one of your children; better yet, read it aloud to them and discuss its contents together as a family." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

click for details | | THE MOTHER AT HOME: Raising Your Children in the Fear of the Lord John S.C. Abbott
"Long esteemed as one of the most valued works from the 19th century on the art of mothering and the glory of the work of the mother at home. For any girl who was raised without much discipline and in need of instruction on proper discipline of her own children, this is a superb guide. Rarely in print and worth obtaining at any price. Christian mothers who want biblical counsel on Christian child rearing will find this book valuable." -Grace and Truth Books
"The object of this book is practical utility, not literary effect. It is written for mothers in the common walks of life. There are many mothers, in every village of our land, who are looking eagerly for information respecting the government of their children. It is hoped that the following treatise may render them some assistance." from the Author's Preface
"The Mother at Home" is now being published as the companion volume to "The Child at Home" by the same author. This volume was actually written first and its immediate success induced Abbott to write the companion volume for the children. Every mother and grandmother ought to read this book once a year to remind them of their most solemn duty, in the words of the author, "to lead their children to the Savior, and to prepare them for their heavenly home."

| | | | FEED MY LAMBS: Lectures to Children on Matters of Life and Death John Todd
"This little work, after having passed through fifteen editions in this country (USA), and we know not how many in England, after having been translated into French, German, Greek, and many more languages, printed in raised letters for the blind, and last of all, having been adopted as a school-book for the liberated slaves at Sierra Leone, is now sent forth by the publishers in a new dress, with the addition of two new Lectures." - Author's Preface
John Todd (1800-1873) was a graduate of Yale College and Andover Theological Seminary. His theology was molded by the writings of Jonathan Edwards, and he had the privilege of pastoring Edwards Memorial Church in Northampton, MA.
William G. Blaikie said, "In preaching to the young, Dr. Todd has attained the first rank in this department of work. The American mind has such a proclivity to sharp, terse forms of expression, clever analogies and illustrations, keen analysis of feelings, vivid description and warm coloring, that we do not wonder that it should excel in addresses to which such qualities contribute so largely."
These lectures are the fruit of a ministry directed with conviction to the consciences of the young. From the opening page of these lectures the reader is addressed in such a personal way that he cannot but hear the words for himself.
Not only should these be read by and to children, but every pastor and Sunday School teacher should read it and learn the delicate art of speaking to children. This was a best seller in the middle of the 19th century, but it has been buried for more than 125 years. It is high time Todd was able to speak again for the cause of God and truth.

| | | | EARLY PIETY ILLUSTRATED Memoir of Nathan W. Dickerman, the Little Sufferer, Whose Testimony Touched Hearts the World Over Gorham Abbott
This volume contains the incrdible story of the conversion and death bed of a young boy who died nearly three months prior to his 8th birthday. Nathan Dickerman (1822-1830) was not raised in a godly home but one day a Sabbath School Teacher invited him to come to his class. This was the beginning of Nathan's dramatic conversion.
Dying of consumption, Nathan demonstrated such unusual depths of humility and love for Christ that there was a steady stream of pastors and Sabbath School Teachers who would sit by his bed and minister to him. More often than not they would leave the greater blessed.
Gorham Abbott, brother of John & Jacob, was assigned the priviliged task of keeping a journal of the last months of Nathan's life. This he did with great tenderness and care.
This is a book for every parent, pastor, teacher and child. It sets forth a heart-warming example of how Jesus Christ tenderly cares for his little lambs. It will be a strong rebuke to those who question whether or not children can experience genuine conversion.

In the language of Dr. Sprague, "This is a work that will bear to be read more than once, and each successive reading wiil be likely to reveal some new gem of thought, which, in the general mass of excellence, had been overlooked before. It is a book suitable for the husband to present to his wife, the mother to her daughter, and the brother to his sister; and the more widely it is circulated, the better for the country and the world."
"It is not sufficient praise to say that we have been interested in the perusal of this book. It is just such a book as the times demand. It presents to the female mind incentives to live for something more noble than to flit like a butterfly in the sunshine of capricious admiration. 'The Excellent Woman, described in the Book of Proverbs,' is the text by which the writer enforces the truth that, true dignity and honor are alone attained by a thorough knowledge, and continued practice of the relative duties of life. We recommend it to the careful perusal of all our patrons.' - The Mothers' Journal.
"An excellent book, elegantly printed, and embellished with some twenty-four beautiful engravings. We commend the work most cordially to mothers, sisters, and daughters." Philadelphia Christian Observer
"We have commended no book with more heartiness and good will, and shall be glad if our commendation places it in the families of our readers, as a book to be read." - Watchman and Reflector.

"Imagine, leading your family in daily worship in the home, reading the Scriptures, singing and praying, but simultaneously introducing them to the history, leading figures and theology of the great sixteenth-century Reformation - all this in a fresh and interesting way, in just about a quarter of an hour each day. 'That would be great,' you say, 'but it would take me hours and days to put that together. I could never do it.' Well, Ray Rhodes has done it for you in Family Worship for the Reformation Season. Use this book with joy. It will inspire, inform and instruct you and your family. The studies are simple but meaty. The Scriptures passages are helpfully chosen. And most of the lessons can be completed in fifteen minutes. Employ and be edified!" - Dr. Ligon Duncan
"Many today have called our increasingly secular age the beginning of 'a new dark ages'. Others see our climate as a time similar to that which birthed the Reformation - a time when the light of God's Word broke through the abiding spiritual darkness - becoming one characterized by the production and proliferation of the Scriptures. Thus, the latter was a movement from a visual-based society to a word-based society. Toward this end, Ray Rhodes provides us with a much-needed tool for our families to return to God's Word, understand our heritage, and be equipped to perpetuate this faith to the generations to come. You have all you need in this book to teach your family how to celebrate the Reformation season!" - Pastor Jerry Marcellino
"Once common, the practice of family worship has all but disappeared among the people of God today. Recent years, however, have seen a revival of interest in and commitment to this biblical responsibility and privilege. Ray Rhodes has contributed to the recovery of this resurgence with practical books like this one. Informative and useful at any time of year, this book would be particularly timely in the weeks leading up to Reformation Day." - Dr. Donald Whitney
"This book combines two divine blessings that are being rediscovered by a growing number of Christians in our day--our Reformation heritage and family worship. Ray Rhodes has performed a great service to families by organizing useful information about the former in ways that can be easily used in the latter. I pray that this book will be used to teach the rising generation important biblical truths through the stories of faithful men and women on whose shoulders we stand." - Dr. Tom Ascol, Pastor
"From the pen of author, pastor, conference speaker and book dealer Ray Rhodes comes yet another gem: a month of studies for the Reformation season geared for family worship. If you long to know more about this pivotal time in church history, yet you have felt intimidated by the subject matter, then get this book. You will learn, your family will learn--and you just might have a lot of fun as well." - Dr. David W. Bailey, Pastor
Following a similar format to our best-selling book of 2007, 'Family Worship for the Christmas Season', this book is intended to be used from October 1 - 31, with the grand climax being Reformation Day. At the same time, this book can be used at any time of the year. It is both informative and practical.

click for details | | FAMILY WORSHIP FOR THE THANKSGIVING SEASON Ray Rhodes, Jr.
This is the third in our ongoing and growing series of volumes intended to assist families in their joyful duty of Family Worship.
"Over 40 million Americans will travel fifty or more miles during the Thanksgiving holiday to visit with family and friends. With the growth of America, since its' founding, has also come the scattering of families across the land. Thanksgiving Day calls families to journey 'over the river and through the wood' to sit around the table, enjoy a meal and remember days gone by. In the homes of Christians, Thanksgiving serves as another opportunity to recount the faithfulness of God and to give Him thanks.
I pray that this book will be a help to you as you lead your family to worship God.
Each day includes a Scripture reading, historical glimpse and theological thought. Read these sections with your family and consider adding a hymn and prayer of thanksgiving as a part of your regular family worship activities." -Ray Rhodes, Jr.
"What a complete joy it is to offer my blessing and recommendation of Ray Rhodes', newest book, Family Worship for the Thanksgiving Season. Ray has given us a doxological feast of 31 creative lessons which offer the fruit of both an informed mind and enflamed heart. The beauty of Ray's writing may only be surpassed by the beauty of his family--the precious community in which our brother has invested so much of his heart and cultivated his tremendous love for the gospel and God's people. Not only your Thanksgiving season, but your entire year will be enriched by highly accessible and Biblically faithful reflections." Scotty Smith, Pastor for Preaching, Teaching and Worship Christ Community Church, Franklin TN, Author of Unveiled Hope, with Michael Card; Speechless, with Steven Curtis Chapman; Objects of His Affection; The Reign of Grace; and Restoring Broken Things, with Steven Curtis Chapman
"Ray Rhodes has provided another devotional gem that families who want to worship God in their homes will find useful. Though Thanksgiving tends to be more about travel, sporting events and food than about genuine gratitude to our Creator, the very name of the holiday provides an opportunity to stop and reflect on God's goodness. This book is an excellent guide in remembering God's mercies that are provided in the gospel while taking note of His kind providence in the history of America. Use it to stir up thanksgiving in your home as Thanksgiving approaches on your calendar." - Dr. Tom Ascol, Executive Director Founders Ministries
"After reading this latest work by Ray Rhodes, I have never been more convinced that God has uniquely called him to write on Family Worship for our generation. His genuine burden is contagious and is being embraced by many at this needy hour. Could there be a better time in our nation's history for a Christian and his family to learn afresh or revisit the early moments of our nationÆs founding? Enter into the world of Pilgrim America. Relive that first Thanksgiving season. Follow our forefathers from Holland to Cape Cod. Then, emulate their faith. Pass it on to your children. And pray for God's mercy upon the USA." - Pastor Jerry Marcellino, Audubon Drive Bible Church, Laurel, Mississippi.
"In Family Worship for the Thanksgiving Season Ray Rhodes has provided families with a roadmap to thankfulness that includes some unique treasures not found in similar works. The combination of historic treasures that any Father or Mother can share with their children, in addition to theological pillars of our historic, Christian faith, each day is highlighted with a pertinent Scripture verse that ties it all together. This combination of Scripture, theology and history is rooted in our American tradition and heritage. Some works on the family tend to idolize the institution, thus making family the center of everything. Not so with Ray, for the family is set in its proper context of providing the foundation for character and devotion destined to bless both church and community through serving others and not indulging in self-gratification. This book will add another dimension to a family's knowledge and appreciation of our Thanksgiving tradition from the Pilgrims to the present day proclamations of Presidents who honored our forefathers. I highly recommend Family Worship!"- Dr. Paul Jehle, Senior Pastor, The New Testament Church, Plymouth, MA

"Marital intimacy is one of the Lord's greatest gifts to his creatures. Sadly, many couples fail to experience the fullness of that gift. Pastor Ray Rhodes skillfully and sensitively brings husbands and wives to the word of the Creator to rediscover his beautiful design for the marriage bed in this wonderfully helpful book." - John Crotts, co-author Tying the Knot Tighter: Because Marriage Lasts a Lifetime (with Martha Peace). John is also the author of Mighty Men and Craftsmen.
"Pastor Ray Rhodes proves in the present volume that he understands and implements the Puritan ideal of Christ-centered, biblical and practical living. Imagine a book on marital intimacy that has the modest restraint of a godly pastor, the sound theology of a Scriptural exegete and the experimental authenticity of a two-decade-plus faithful husband -- you hold such a book in your hand! " -Dr. David W. Bailey, author--Speaking the Truth in Love: The Life and Legacy of Roger Nicole.
"Writing on a subject so sensitive and provocative is a minefield of potential offenses to a reader's conscience, but this book navigates the issue of sexual intimacy with tact, wisdom, simplicity, and grace. Well done." - Pastor Scott Kay, Grace Church, Alpharetta, GA. Scott writes at, http://scottwkay.wordpress.com/

| | | | RAISING MAIDENS OF VIRTUE: A Study of Feminine Loveliness for Mothers and Daughters Stacy McDonald
Contains new, updated content and additional chapters.
Subtitled A Study of Feminine Loveliness for Mothers and Daughters
Now, in its 7th printing, this revised and expanded edition of Stacy McDonald's popular Bible study for mothers and daughters reflects a mature and seasoned approach to mentoring young women. With many of the original chapters polished and revised, and several new chapters added, readers will find this resource refreshing and even more useful than before.
Godly women are not born, but raised. Raising Maidens of Virtue is a storehouse of tools for mothers to employ to raise up a daughter whose life will honor God. Written in an engaging style, Stacy McDonald conveys the truth through stories, conversations, illustrations, and memory-making projects, to warmly encourage girls to think Biblically about themselves and their world. Offers useful counsels on modesty, feminine beauty, guarding the tongue, idleness, sibling relationships, honoring parents, contentment and more.
"Young ladies entrenched in our modern society are in a desperate situation. So many have lost the vision for beautiful, rewarding femininity and womanhood. Raising Maidens of Virtue helps restore that vision and guide our girls along the path to godly, joyous maidenhood. In her delightful book, Stacy McDonald has given a helpful hand to mother and daughter alike, offering hope and practical solutions for those of us desiring that wonderful role of women of virute." -- Mrs. Beall Phillips (wife of Doug Phillips)
"Godly women are not born, but raised. Stacy McDonald has, in this work, equipped parents to be about the business of raising up rubies, or rather, that which is more precious still: our daughters. She is a faithful guide, for she is a godly example." -- Dr. R.C. Sproul, Jr.
"In the face of our culture's shameless enticement of young women to view their identity and worth only in terms of their sexuality, Stacy McDonald passionately challenges mothers and daughters together to return to a pure and gracious femininity for the God who made us uniquely for His glory" -- Mrs. Tracy Klicka (wife of Chris Klicka, Sr. Counsel, HSLDA - Home School Legal Defense Assoc.)
"Raising Maidens of Virtue is a treasure-house full of gems of biblical wisdom. Delivered with Stacy McDonald's unique blend of wit, wisdom, and warmth, her years of experience lend credibility to a book chock-full of biblical advice. This unique mother-daughter relationship builder explores sensitive areas in the realm of princess-rearing such as how to develop inward beauty, spiritual sensitivities, and outward behavior that is both pleasing to God and a witness to others of active grace in the heart. It is easy to see why this book has taken a place of prominence in the lives of thousands of mothers and their daughters, and this revised and expanded edition is even more helpful! I highly recommend this book as a valuable tool for Christian mothers and their daughters." -- Becky Morecraft

| | | | THOUGHTS ON FAMILY WORSHIP, HEAVEN OPENED, HEART TREASURES, A TREATISE ON EARTHLY-MINDEDNESS, THE BEST MATCH, THE TRUE CHRISTIAN'S LOVE TO THE UNSEEN CHRIST Alexander, Alleine, Heyward, Burroughs, Pearce & Vincent
The Puritans considered the family as "a little church," and the father as its pastor. It was his duty to oversee and shepherd his flock. In our day, the idea of a family gathering together for worship is virtually unkown, save for a few isolated pockets where this wonderful tradition is being carried on in spite of the demands of a world that seeks our time, our attention, and our focus. As families get busier with sports, school activites, church activities, and recreation, this book calls us back to a long-forgotten priority: that of worshipping God in the home as well as the church.
A classic book on the importance of an often-neglected duty, Thoughts on Family Worship by James W. Alexander focuses on the many benefits of daily worship as it strengthens minds and cultivates personal piety among both parents and children. The author further shows how family worship influences our churches and society, perpetuating sound doctrine and leaving a legacy for posterity.
Alexander provides practical directions for conducting family worship, discussing in detail such things as the place of Scripture reading, prayer, and praise. He is aware, however, of the difficulties of maintaining family worship and answers several common objections to it.
If you struggle to hold times of worship with your family, or even if you simply desire some encouragement in the practice, this book is sure to provide the words of counsel you need.
