THE PASTOR'S DAUGHTER: The Way of Salvation Explained to his Daughter by Rev. Edward Payson
Louisa Payson Hopkins

A unique glimpse into the home and heart of the remarkable Payson family of Portland, Maine, as Edward Payson lovingly leads his oldest daughter, Louisa, to genuine faith in Christ. It traces the struggles of a brilliant girl from the age of 4 to 14 as she seeks to come to Christ on her own terms, and not the Lord's.

Those who have loved "A Pastor's Sketches" by Ichabod Spencer will find themselves in familiar territory as Payson faithfully presses his daughter to repent and believe the Gospel. The chapters are brief and filled with illuminating illustrations that parents and pastors alike will find useful in presenting the claims of Christ and the demands of the Gospel upon sinners. There is nothing like this available anywhere!

It cannot be recommended too highly!

Preface

Preface to this New Edition

The book you now hold in your hands is a wonderful example of both pastoral and paternal faithfulness. In a day when it is all too common for pastors to be successful in the church while being utter failures at home, this volume is a welcome change.

Edward Payson (1783-1827) was considered one of the most powerful preachers of the early years of America. Although he died at the age of forty-four, his ministry touched tens of thousands the world over. All who read his Memoir, written after his death, came to appreciate why the Lord so blessed him with myriads of genuine conversions. He lived that others might be saved. One of the disap-pointments of the Memoir was the lack of information about his dealings with his family. The Pastor's Daughter answers that lack.

The Pastor's Daughter was written by the oldest of the Payson daughters, Louisa. Although it is written as a story about Maria Stanhope and her father, it is actually the real life experience of Louisa with her beloved father. Louisa was only fifteen when her father died, and soon thereafter she decided to put her personal testimony into print. As the Advertisement page asserts, "this little book is not a ficti-tious narrative. It is, substantially, a record of conversations and incidents, which really occurred." When it was originally released it was done so anonymously, but after several editions it was decided that it was best to make known that the author was Louisa Payson, and the father was Edward Payson.

Louisa was the oldest of the Payson daughters. The youngest Payson daughter was Elizabeth, who is best known for her wonderful book Stepping Heavenward and her famous hymn More Love to Thee, O Christ. Those who have read her writings will be delighted that we are given here a glimpse into the home of the Payson family. It has recently been our pleasure to reprint The Life & Letters of Elizabeth Payson Prentiss, which contains the following helpful material on her oldest sister Louisa:

Louisa Payson was born at Portland, February 24, 1812. Even as a child she was the object of tender interest to her father on account of her remarkable intellectual promise. He took the utmost pains to aid and encourage her in learning to study and to think. The impression he made upon her may be seen in the popular little volume entitled 'The Pastor's Daughter,' which consists largely of conversations with him, written out from memory after his death. She was then in her sixteenth year.

It was while reading these very words that the publisher was made aware of The Pastor's Daughter. Immediately a search was done on the Internet for a copy of this book and only one was found. Upon receiving the book it was instantly devoured and determined that our day stood in great need of just this book. Why? This book can serve as a tool for pastors and parents to use in bringing children to a solid faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. This book can serve as an antidote to easy-believism that has infected churches throughout the world. There are no pat answers offered by Payson. There is no simple prayer offered to assure his daughter of heaven. This little volume offers an "old path" that has been abandoned in our day. The results are multitudes of false converts filling the pews of our churches.

We are delighted to be able to offer this book to a church that is in desperate need of guidance in child evangelism. Edward Payson labored to see men and women, boys and girls, brought to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a true blessing to be able to see him labor in the privacy of his own home and hearth to press the claims of Christ upon his beloved daughter. It will do us all a great deal of good to sit at his feet and learn from him. May the Lord be pleased to use this work to train up a new generation of Paysons who will not rest until the gospel is glorified in our heart and our home.
